It is one of my absolute favorite songs and the solo that he plays on the track in the SOTT movie is one of my 3 fav Prince solos of all time. I seem to remember that in the live version, it sounds like the horns are playing the riff from Rock Hard In A Funky Place.

Yes, the Dream Factory version is about 25 seconds longer. There was an instrumental part from 2:40-3:06 that was (wisely) removed.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

dancing jig woot! music

It was only last June
When her old man ran away
She couldn't stop crying
'Cause she knew he was gone 2 stay

It was 10:35 on a lonely friday night
She was standin' by the bar
Hmm, she was lookin' alright, yeah

I asked if she wanted 2 dance
And she said all she wanted was a good man
And wanted 2 know
If I thought I was qualified, yeah

And I said, baby don't waste your time
I know what's on your mind
I may be qualified 4 a one night stand
But I could never take the place of your man

It hurt me so bad when she told me
With tears in her eyes (Tears in her eyes)
He was all she ever had
And now she wanted 2 die

He left her with a baby
And another one on the way
She couldn't stop cryin'
Cause she knew he was gone 2 stay

She asked me if we could be friends
And I said, oh, honey baby that's a dead end
U know and I know
That we wouldn't be satisfied
No
And I said

Baby don't waste your time
I know what's on your mind
U wouldn't be satisfied (Wouldn't be satisfied)
With a one night stand

And I could never take the place of your man

Yeah, yeah, the place of your man

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!
RIP Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, Heavy D, and Donna Summer. rose

This song was a "grower" for me. Originally, it was in the bottom quarter of the Sign album for me. Now it's one of my favorites.

The full band feel (with Prince playing everything of course) is really nice. There are a couple of other tracks on Sign that would benefit from more instruments. Stripped down is good for If I Was Your Girlfriend. But Forever in My Life could use at minimum acoustic guitar all the way through, making it closer to the film or better yet the Small Club version.

hands down one of his best, had a bit of everything, genius riff, great, great lyrics (which showed his vulnerable side which was always a plus) great chord progression and super brilliant solo. If he weren't so bullheaded and brilliant he could have turned songs like this into pure pop confection by taking out the idiosycratic lyrics which places the onus on the womans perspective (a prince specialty) sang by a man. That album and the b-sides contained such brilliant stuff, strange relationship, If I was your gf all thematically related and all fantastic songs but just offbeat enough to alienate the pop marketplace which may have been what he wanted.

he did a different arrangement (slower?) of this during the xenophobia/ona tour

but I haven't been able to find it anymore. from what I remember about it, that

was just a very great performance.

as far as the 'original' goes, it's just a perfect pop song. love it.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

25th June 2002 ? maybe 26th - I reckon that is exactly how he will do it this time around as well...

Jordan knight from the new kids did a pretty good ballad of it a few years ago, I was surprised at the job he did with it.
