I dont understand it

Santana releases his Montreux live Blu Ray 2001, plus he has 2 more Blu Rays also the Supernatural DVD.

Yet we have to search the back alleys of the net to find bootlegged Prince Montreux DVDs

I really do not understand Prince's logic when it comes to releasing content to his fans.

Over the years he has done some amazing gigs all of them would wipe the floor with other artists if released on DVD or Blu Ray.

Thoughts guys?

Prince wants his dvd's to sell well. With boot legs and lack of interest from the general public-He wont be the center of sales or public pop universe, so what's the point of releasing a non hit driven DVD? There really isn't a point financially to release a live performance unless it was hit driven. Without the hits, it wont sell well and it will bring down Prince's cache value when doing business deals in the future, like for one off deals etc.

Although we are do for a live DVD, it has been a while Mr. Nelson. Hit driven or not I'll buy it.

I look at it this way. Prince (for whatever reason) doesn't want to release blu-ray's of his concerts, classic live shows and vault tracks... But it's ok, because we can get them for free, many in crystal clear, perfect quality without overdubs and with superb artwork.

I don't feel the slightest bit guilty about obtaining these as I would (and always have) purchase these officially if he pulled his finger out. He doesn't want to, so fine, free it is!

Plus, with his current output becoming much slower and not to my tastes as much as some of his older stuff, it sort of 'buffers' me and keeps me interested.

Win/win.

What are you waiting for? It is available on DVD:

http://www.amazon.ca/Prince-Sign-The-Times-Live/dp/B0006HC5SC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333809705&sr=8-1

And it's only $15! You won't be disappointed.

I hope an HD version is rebroadcast like it did back in 2009 (I think) because they must have made a pro HD transfer which was then scaled down to make the DVD master. Encore HD showed it. If it was rebroadcast, you can bet it would become a blu-ray bootleg or simple HD download torrent.

I'm really not smart with the business of music or how it works, but

wouldn't it be very easy for Prince to sell his stuff on iTunes and

on the Internet?

Apple doesn't really make any money off of their music sales (Well, in

percentages anyways)--they're selling the hardware it plays on.

I would think Prince could easily generate money selling his material

online, and not part of some silly ass music club with riddles and

passwords---just a store that sells material. Or making his material

available through a major online retailer.

Welcome 2 the Dawn indeed. lol

Apple make a fortune from their content. For every 99c track, it works out at about 50c for the record company, 40c for apple & 9c for the artist. Not too shabby for apple wink

I agree with this post, and even though it is so logical, I'm reminded of Spinlight's description of Prince, which is my favorite. "Prince is batshit crazy." Those of us who are long-time Prince fans have played the "should've, would've, could've" game with Prince and his decisions for years. As Imago states, there are so many different ways that Prince could have obtained the financial rewards he wanted while allowing his fans even greater access to his work. Yet, what has kept me from becoming a frustrated, angry, or bitter fan is realizing early in his career that Prince is "batshit crazy," and I'm glad that Spinlight finally gave me a word that fits perfectly with the sentiment that I've had of Prince for years. Dude is "batshit crazy," and I just enjoy what I can get from him and don't sweat the rest.

Thanks!
FOr some reason, I thought I read that they actually sold music at unprofitable margins to get their iPods to sell or something.

Anyways, by that formula Prince stands to make 50c + 0c for a total of 59c for every track sold.
That seems to be the lions share to me.

which is true in most cases. As he's not got a record company 'middleman', he would actually do pretty damn well. As Imago pointed out above, $0.59 per track is a VERY good rate of pay... So why doesn't he use them more..? He stated that it's because they don't pay an upfront. Well duh! They're not a record company, they're a music store. I'm pretty sure the real reason is that he's scared that his newer releases won't sell, which would be viewed as a failure. He'd rather chase an upfront deal with a mediocre album than hone his craft, release a killer album & let the music speak for itself. Let's see what he does next... wink

With twitter and facebook available to everyone, he should create accounts, have the bieber world support him, and place a killer album on itunes. However, a payment up-front would probably not be a good situation in this case. He needs the .59 cents at a time if it's a huge seller.
