Madonna steals from Prince by bundling her new album together with each concert ticket purchased, Madonna has assured herself of the number one album, surpassing lionel ritchie's new CD.
Articles have pointed to Tom Petty having done the same thing, but...
Didn't our Prince start the idea...and....didn't billboard/soundscan say they wouldn't count those types of sales anymore, because of Prince's brilliant marketing idea?

If I paid what it costs to see Madonna and got that shitty CD I’d be insulted.

Yeah. And don't forget how she also copied his idea of selling an oversized photo book bundled with a CD 16 years before he did.
Damn that time travelling thief! blah blah blah

Keep researching. If you've gone to the trouble of reading an article about it and starting a thread about it, the answer is easily accessible to you through the same means.

Isn't the term "steal" a bit excessive...?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I don't get it.Tom Petty and Bon Jovi have both used this promotional strategy with their recent albums and no one said anything, but when Madonna does it,people make a big deal and say she's "stealing" from Prince

People have been hating on Madonna for 30 years. Every move she makes has been scrutinized by haters and critics for three decades now. It was one of the reasons I was surprised at all the love Gaga got when M got shit for when she did it. Instead of giving her props for having a succesful career people love to just rake her over the coals. These same assholes will be singing her praises when she dies because The Queen is not going away any time soon. I think that peoples hatred for Madonna stems from the fact that she is not that accomplished of a musician, and it's tough to put your finger on exactly what attributes make her a success year after year. She doesn't really write her own material, she doesn't play her own material, she doesn't have a phenomenal voice, she doesn't put that much soul into her art. So why exactly has she been such a big success for 30 years.
Not that I all the way agree with these people, I just think that that is a lot of people's feelings. "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

No, in the 1980's it was clear why she was a draw,
to say she put 'not that much soul' into her art, is seriously wrong. The fact that she actually sees the projects thru from beginning to end, means she is all over it. She seeks out the best, from photographers and directors, she's a work a holic. Even Prince worked with and wanted her in his film GB.
I think one of the big things is she is still real about herself. A lot of people don't 'really write their own music' She does co-write most of her music.
Prince is my man, but his ego says he can do it all by himself, her confidence says I can't do it all by myself. I remember seeing her on SNL when she first started learning guitar and she was really vulnerable about it and told the audience don't laugh at her.
I don't know how she can't be considered an artist, she is definately a great entertainer. She is very much in touch with culture and popular culture which makes her 'touchable' and she's been able to express what's happening thru her music and the video imagery she puts out thru videos and concerts. The 1990's especially early - mid 90's she interpreted and brought out a lot of sexual issues happening and hidden, stuff people were hypocritical about, and the early 1990's was totally going thru a social sexual change. Prince wasn't able to do it, maybe the PRince of 1981-1986 would have but not the Prince of 1990's he got swollowed by what was happening that climate
But a lot of the hate comes from her being a woman that dominates and men get angry at that.

True I'm sure many people feel that way but in my opinion to say that Madonna doesn't put that much soul into her material is a shocking disservice. The Like A Prayer album alone should have quoshed any complaints about her not being a real artists. Songs like Oh Father, Keep It Together, Promise To Try and Till Death Do Us Part are brutally honest songs, Songs I hasten to add she co-wrote.
Her involvment in writting is not just to change the odd word here and there It's real colaboration with ideas, lyrics and melodies that originate from her. Elton John never writes lyrics but nobody ever tries to put him down as mearly a colaborator the way they do with Madonna. She doesn't have a Whitney, Mariah belting out voice but she is more than capable of conveying emotion with it, to my ears far more successfully then either of these big voiced divas.
Shrewd business woman as true as it maybe is just something that's been repeated to undermine the fact she was succesfull in not being just another victim of the industry (not being just another dissposable teenybopper puppet). She has longevity not simply through crude sales tactics but a fan base that has a real emotional connection with her work and artistry in the same way that Prince fans do.
But I agree with you lots of people feel that way towards her and each to there own. There's many artists I don't get that people seem to love and have deep emotional connections with. But Madonna seems to be one who's artistry is unfairly dissmissed. Weirdly most of the people that do are probably the first ones on the dance floor when Into The Groove or Hung Up are spun.
But that's just my 2cents and happy to hear any other point of view

what about Janet then? Is she just popular because of her relation with Michael Jackson?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I totally agree! this is actually how I feel about Madonna. One of the reasons why I'm a huge fan, is because I really have a emotional connection to her. her songs are very personal, but I can find myself in her songs/lyrics. And in her statements, art, etc. She has talent, damn! She is super creative, most of her tours/shows are her ideas! and also she co-wrote/wrote almost all her songs. A lot of songs are very personal! and she does play an instrument, a guitar. not amazingly good, but she can play it and she plays guitar on her albums last 10 years so yeah.. and mostly performs live on her guitar. Also she tells the producer exactly want she wants! She co-produced all of the songs on her latest album MDNA.

I really think this is what's it all about....she's a woman and very succelfull. Men (and probably also a lot of women) can't handle it. She's in control. If she was a man, people wouldn't be asking if she wrote her own material, if she had talent.

why is it the she stole from Prince? he wasnt the first artist to do this either.

fucking bitch! next she'll be wanting to ride his motorcycle!

Nope, because of her realtionship with Jimmy and Terry! TRUE BLUE

Janet is primarily a female member of the Time. Jam and Lewis made her...that said, she has more appeal 2 me than Madonna. At least Janet is fine, Madonna...not so much.
How both of them lasted this long is a tribute 2 thier hard work I guess.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
...and to add to that, if you notice Janet's last few albums without them have been what I would consider to be flops. TRUE BLUE

Who else would she steal from? He is the best..... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I like how you mentioned her confidence says "I can't do it all myself"
At one point in time, I never understood the 'Hype' about Madonna. Now, I understand her place in the industry and she was really ahead of her time. Sure she isn't the BEST around (Especially these days!!..Her latest album sucks...IMO). But she has her a place in this industry. And like OldFriends4Sale mentioned she has interpreted and brought sexual issues out. She really brought a new spectrum of things, and I respect and love her. She has longevity.
SIDE TRACKED: Yesterday I was just thinking how the 3 biggest '80's' Stars were all born in 1958. Madonna, Michael Jackson, And Prince. Very coincidental!
Nevertheless I agree totally what you layed down Moderator! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Madonna is the new Lady Gaga i.e. maximum commercial success from minimum talent.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm actually not all that keen on Madge, but come on!! Minimum talent? You don't rule the airwaves in a career spanning 4 decades on minimum talent.
She knows her market. She can play the drums, she can play guitar at least as good as Andy Allo, she can dance, As an actress, she's appeared in more hit films than Prince, she's directed movies and she can teach everyone (Prince included) a thing or two about promotion.
Plus, she has released a string of hit albums, singles and sung live (yeah not all of the time, granted), way before autotune allowed every tone-deaf to do so.
If you think Madonna only has a minimum talent, then I look forward to your success thanks to your undoubtedly superior skills.

Madonna didn't steal the idea , she just borrowed. I really don't understand all the hate towards her. Madonna worked hard for her success and longevity. She may not be the most talented , but she does have some talent. What I don't understand is why have people been making a big fuss about Lady Gaga doing what Madonna has been doing all along?

Okay, so I have two questions. One, was Prince the first person to do this sort of thing? I understand that there is nothing really new under the sun, but I always thought that he was the first to do this. * Two, have the people that have done this after Prince received as much scrutiny about it as Prince did in 2004? It seemed that Prince was criticized for falsely inflating his CD sells, and I just wonder if the media and music industry have been hypocritical in how they treat others as it relates to how they treated Prince because it seemed to me that both the media and the music industry attempted to discount Prince's CD sells and chart position, and I want to know if they have done the same to others? Neither of these are sarcastic questions. I really don't know and would like to be enlightened.
