Is this the longest stretch Prince has went without releasing an album? From what I've read on Wikipedia in terms of release dates, is that if Prince doesn't release an album EVERY year (like he does most of the time) then the ususal cut off point would usually be a year and a half.
But it's been almost two whole years since the release of 20ten.
Also, I've noticed that when he usually takes time off between albums the next release is usually a strong effort (Purple Rain, The Rainbow Children, 3121, Lotusflow3r, etc), So if this IS the longest stretch then I'm expecting his next album to be the greatest product in music recording HISTORY!!!
Lol, not likely, but if past scenarios such as the above are any sort of indication, then I will look forward to his next output.
Whadda y'all think? | |

I almost wonder if he is done putting out traditional albums altogether.
He certainly has been outspoken about the record industry and the difficulty that artists have in making money off of their own music. With his recent tours he seems to realize that the best way an artist can make money is to go on tour. He's said that he is taking a break from recording.
I don't know how long this will last, but it seems to me that this might be the end of line.
Get this man some inspiration (other than money) to make him want to do it for the love of the art! Or all we'll have left is his Greatest Hits Tours.

Geez, I sure hope that's not the case!
I was aware that Prince recently stated that he was on "recording rehab" or whatnot, but even at that, haven't there been times in the past when Prince has made similar statements and then one year later: new album? It's understood very clearly that Prince could (and probably will) change his mind in a nanosecond.
Even if he is serious about his recording rehab, then this must be the longest he's ever held on to one of his whimsical or impulsive ideas.

To answer the question in your title.......... No.
It's been about 21 months since 20TEN came out. There was 23 months between Musicology and 3121.

His 3 big commercial successes were in the fourth year of every decade.

I like it that he's breaking his releasing pattern.
Makes me excited about what he's up to.
I have a hunch that his next album is going to be mindblowing.
My gut instinct tells me, he will compose an album that comes from his pure inner soul. No ego or other bullshit will be in between him and the music.
I think he's slowly moving to a stage where he knows he can let go and trust that it will be allright.
And when he truly can do that. When he truly can let go control and just trust and surrender that whatever happens or comes he has to accept. When he grows into that and stays true to his instincts, it will lead to a masterpiece.
But he'll have to push himself and do some soulsearching during that process.
No, I'm not on drugs. It's just my instinct.
He'll let us wait and tease us like he should. And when it comes, it will be superb.
You know, just like an orgasm should be. Not fast and mechanical. But true and pure.

I don't mind no new album like others in the hope that it means that he's using this time to create something strong. I would also like it to be an official label release with good marketing and full page advertisments in magazines and news papers (likelihood of that is slim), but the only relatively big release I've been around for is 3121, which wasn't huge but still there were adverts and adverisements nonetheless. Id just like to experience a Prince hype with a solid album to back it up and of course a strong tour (arena, but a sprinkle of hits and obscure tracks and majority of new tracks)...now in going to go and wake up

What an adorable one you are! With hopes and everything!
An album w/ Prince hype isn't much different than what you experienced w/ 3121. That was more hype than he'd gotten in 10 years.

Unquestionably, his longest stretch without releasing an album was 1958-78. The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

20 months, so not as significant as the Musicology-3121 gap. |

Personally, I want Prince to keep touring around more and take as much time as he wants for the next album. Anticipation is the key. Keep 'em anxious Prince!

It is something big coming. Prince is releasing his new mega project.
New Andy Allo Featuring Prince Coming Soon!
ANDY ALLO's 2nd CD entitled "Superconductor" will be released early this summer. The CD contains 6 self-penned tracks and 3 songs co-written with Prince. The 3 songs written with Prince are "Superconductor", "The Calm", and "Gone". Special guests on the CD so far include Maceo Parker, Trombone Shorty, The NPG, The Hornheadz and of course-PRINCE, who also executive produced the record. The CD is in the final stages of post-production will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I laughed at that way longer than I probably should've. Thank god it's Friday!
Also, we can't have it both ways - calls to "take some time off and get some inspiration" and "waaaahhh, where is my annual splooge of a 12 track catch-all toss off" don't really gel.

I´m looking forward to it. However it´s Andy´s album. Not Prince´s.
I really hope she going to get good reviews and a lot of airplay. Wish her the best and it would be so great if her solo career would take of.

Mega project? Who? Fuck me you're easily pleased. I've given up all hope of a proper and decent release. Yes i'll buy it, but will it be the second coming... nope

And anyway, a lot can happen before summer. If he gets bored of f%*#ing her, the album will be dropped faster than you can say Tamar. blah blah blah

I'll be honest. To me 20TEn doesn't count. He didn't release it in the U.S. I didn't jump through hoops to get it from Britian and shouldn't have to.

Does he just have a video fetish or is he really that dependant of other's judgement about his work?
Is he so insecure about his own work, that he depends on the judgement of others, before he decides himself if it is ok or not?

Non-sequitur here, but do you always take the time to capitalize random words when you're writing, or just for this one post?

I'm under the impression it was just for a laugh. Don't read so much into it. Does straight male in high heels, mascara and fancy clothes seem insecure about himself. And he sure is inviting misjudgements if he's worried about then.

I like this post! Very interesting thoughts...
I sometimes have these musing that Prince will experience a late-career rise in popularity like both Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan both enjoyed.
Using Dylan as an example; after he released 'Desire' in 1976, there was a 20 year period in his career when general public stopped giving a shit. Throughout the 80's he was labeled as a has-been and he released a bunch of crappy albums. Then, in 1997 he released 'Time Out Of Mind' (GREAT album) which re-vitalized his career, and now Dylan is more popular than he was since the mid 70's.
But back to your point; I also hope that Prince will eventually experience a creative shift in his artistic endeavours and enjoy the later career success that Dylan has recently.
I think that will be the case... one day...
