No you don't. Don't overdeep the song. Back in the early 80's, this was a funky artsy new wave song... folks was throwing wierd shit into anything - and Prince was wise to get in on it. The moaning just made the song freakier. It's like saying, "you gotta be prince to get it" as an answer to "Why did he play a guitar solo on that song?" Sorry, but it just ain't THAT deep.
