luv4u,

You make a good point, if you were correct (which, thankfully, in this case you are not).

I decided to break up some of the rather long posts (6 in total), with separate posts, to ensure their substantial points did not get "lost", so to speak, in one rather long original post. Do you understand?

So, whilst I understand your moderation intervention, I would politely ask you to leave the thread unless you have either further moderating perspectives or wish to contribute to the substantive content of the thread.

Do you know what bumping a thread is Spirit?

I know you were adding to your THOUGHTS by 'break up some of the rather long posts' IN the thread but, that would be defined or considered to be 'bumping' it.

Luv4u is correct ...

Since when is posting a very large post over several subsequent posts considered bumping your own thread? lol

And at 2am, even. He was definitely bumping for the views, amirite.

SpiritOtter,

Thank you for this intelligent, thought-provoking thread. Please disregard the moderator's misguided admonishing. Bumping a thread requires that it has been around long enough to move down the page, whereas you clearly were simply concerned with breaking your post up to make it more easily digestible, and I for one appreciate that.

Of all of Prince's albums, Lovesexy had by far the most profound effect on my life. Like you, I feel that the radical freedom and individuality that is all over this record (from the cover to the lyrics to the music) sparked within me the desire to allow myself to be who I was, and not continue to live my life in the closet. This album, more than any of the others (but certainly in conjunction with them) showed me that having the strength to be different was possible, and although this seems obvious to me now (and probably all of you as well), at that time in my life that was a revelation. It took me a couple trips to the wrecka stow before I had the balls to buy the album despite the naked man on the front, and the musical reward was immense.

Thanks for reminding me how monumentally important Lovesexy remains to me. Posts like this remind me of why I still come to the Org, after all these years.

This thread reminded me that a couple new friends of mine are due some Prince mix CDs from me ... one of them told me the first day I met him that he loved Prince "in the 80s" and in particular he always had a fondness for Lovesexy.

The other one (a 19-year-old girl whom I became friends with after learning of our shared obsession with all things Billy Corgan) complimented me on my Prince t-shirt a couple weeks ago and almost caused my head to explode when she said "How great of a song is 'Shockadelica,' anyway?"

I think I should make both of them a tracked Lovesexy with 'Eye Wish U Heaven' parts 1, 2 and 3 included as well as an expanded Black Album with the regular version of 'Shockadelica' along with the extended version that surfaced a while back. Can anyone think of anything else that would make sense to put on these CDs?

It always makes me elated when a "normal" (i.e. non-Orger, lol) person likes obscure, brilliant Prince songs and not just "the hits." Very cool. Since I have cloth CD cases where I can put one burned CD on each side, this is the perfect Yin/Yang of The Black Album/Lovesexy ... although I never really found The Black Album to be all that dark, even with its lyrics citing squirrel meat and the imbibing of blood, etc... it always sounded life affirming to me, anyway. But then, I'm weird like that. wink

Cause LOVESEXY IS THE ONE!!!! Till my day is done Hundalasiliah!!!!!

Lovesexy remains one of my favorites by Prince!

From the Large buttons, polka-dots, spiritual enlightenment. It just embodies the very reason I am in a Prince fan. Only he could release something as 'Challenging' as this. He walked in the motion of his own creativity. It's a very bold album with a message so clear and relevant. It tells a story of darkness (Spooky Electric) and Light (Lovesexy). It's a clever way of word play. Prince was speaking of being 'horny' for God. He was speaking of the energy he got sexually for a woman would be forward to God. That may sound blasphemous, but it's actually pretty sacred because they're words. "Tonight, we make love with only words". He isn't talking about sex like we might think of it. smile

I know all the lyrics from top to finish. I continue to listen to it as One track. Everything about it, is just beautiful! : )It's LOVESEXY!

I think this was one of best career moves, and the shows around this time, were like none other.

"I know there is a heaven, I know there is a hell, listen to me people, I got a story to tell/ Excuse me baby, I don't mean to be rude, but tonight, I'm not in the mood, so if you don't mind, I'd like to watch/ This thing we got it's alive, it seems to transcend the physical/ Have you ever been so lonely you felt you were the only one in this world/ You want me to swivel in your love seat? Don't You Baby../What color is your money today?/ So fierce, you look tonight, the brightest star pales to your sex/ If Eye see 11, U can say it's 7, still I wish you heaven/Positivity, have you had your plus sign today?"

SO much I can say about this album! For someone to make such an album that makes no sense, yet comes together, is just Glam Slam!!! I can go on, but I will stop there! Haha

Thanks Spirit for your detailed description! It was beautiful! SO glad you could make those points the way you did! I learned a little more about you! smile SO awesome you were blessed and taken into blessing by this piece. I feel like you, on some of same very reasons Lovesexy remains my favorite..It just makes you say Hundalasiliah! Haha. in fact the moderators actions created more of a bumping effect than the op .. there fore not only did the moderator bump the thread, because said moderator provided no relative input to the threads theme .. but in fact said moderator may have in fact derailed a mildly interesting topic and conversation .. there fore moderator and comoderators claims of bumping are hereby vetoed and declared null and void

personally i am not sure what the title had to do with the actual post. theblueangel,

It is so nice to see you again.

THANK YOU for contributing at depth to this thread and for your understanding regarding my (failed?) attempt to make the original string of posts more digestable; I was beginning to think I was the only one who could clearly see my intention?!

I completely hear what you are saying. I, sometimes, wonder why the aspects you allude to (e.g. being different is not only possible, but to be cherished) are not taught at school (in the mainstream), so that we each develop in a far more holistic, grounded, way (rather than the overriding traditional focus in public or private education being directed almost exclusively toward achievement, whether it be in academia or sports).

And you're right; Lovesexy was a revelation, I believe, both to Prince and for those of us who could open ourselves to feel, understand and reach towards where he was coming from. I don't think for a second it is an understatement to conclude that Prince, himself, was bitterly disappointed that his 'coming out' towards GOD, so to speak, was not more clearly understood and accepted by his audience. It is reasonably known amongst those in his inner circle, for example, that he was quite dismayed at the time with how, at least as it appeared to him, few actually understood the sincere messages he was trying to convey. It is little surprise to me that, even whilst Grafitti Bridge did not end up being the next theme/era (as was originally planned), he clearly was still trying to continue this search for enlightenment and express it as such through his music, until serious commercial and financial concerns emerged (hence, Batman / D&P and, to a certain extent, Symbol).

Thank you, once again, for lifting this place up.

love,

Spirit

EyeJester7,

I had never thought of the "...with only words" lyrics as possibly referred to GOD. It's an interesting perspective. I am somewhat taken back that someone as bright and enthusiastic as your good self, and at such a young age, might have already experienced something akin to a dark night of the soul. I am pleased you are back and that Prince's Lovesexy creative concept helped you feel better. It's an inspiring piece of art. Thank you for sharing.

theblueangel,

It is shocking that Shockadelica would be known by a relative young novice; how cool is she?!

Regarding the tracklist, I would honour the sequencing of both albums and include one CD with The Black Album (including some addiional liner notes regarding its inspiration; you can use the original post, seasoned to your perspective) and another CD with Lovesexy (again, with additional liner notes detailing aspects such as Spooky Electric). I would then include, as a finale, the following as a third separate disc of extended outtakes/B-sides/rarities (in no particular order):

Side 1.

1. Rebirth of the Flesh

2. Housequake (MoQuake)

3. La, La, La, He, He, Hee

4. Scarlet Pussy (Extended)

Side 2.

1. Intermission (Cross The Line)

2. The Line

3. Alphabet Trip (This Is Not Music, This Is A Trip)

4. Glam Slam (Remix)

5. I Wish U Heaven 1, 2 and 3

I quite like the sound of the 3rd disc, now that I've quickly assembled it together! Let me know what you decide to do.

Also, given that she liked the song and you did mention it, perhaps include the extended version of Shocadelica to end Side 1 and the extended version of God Is Alive to end Side 2.

I quite like the idea of including an exemplorary, but different, type of song that allows the funk to be digested more easily between Sides 1 and 2; perhaps, instead of the Intermission, the full extended version of Power Fantastic? It would be nice to include a song that would send shivers down her spine.

Thanks so much for your suggested tracklist, SpiritOtter - I think a 3-disc set makes perfect sense, particularly because it seems sacrilegious to alter the sequencing on either "Lovesexy" or "The Black Album." Also, I find that I tend to start many Prince mix CDs off with "Rebirth of the Flesh," just because I find that to be one of the quirkiest, funkiest songs in his unreleased canon .. and I find the lyrics to be incredibly inspiring. I might even call Disc 3 here "Rebirth of the Flesh," hmmmm... both of the people I will be burning these discs for are big on spirituality and self improvement so I think they will appreciate the message as much as I do. It's never too late to be reborn! wink

I'm so glad that you listed God is Alive ... I had forgotten how much I completely adore this song and now that I think about it, its inclusion is required. The whole point with this set is to give them 2 of Prince's lesser-known but ultra-funky albums in their entirety, followed by a set of unreleased and/or rare gems, and God is Alive fits right in there ... as does The Line, which I also had forgotten about. I just listened to it after reading your post and even after all these years, Ingrid Chavez's voice retains that simplistic beauty and clarity - or maybe it's just because there's no smack in my brain. (Always fun to throw in a Prince joke when possible).

I'm going to create a playlist out of Disc 3 in the order you listed on here and see how it flows (although it looks pretty perfect, but I like to hear it before burning it). I just can't decide if I will call that disc "Rebirth of the Flesh" or "God Is Alive." Hmmmmmmm. Or I could go another way and name the last disc, "Say hello to my little friend...TheBlueAngel!" but that's perhaps a bit verbose. wink

As for Power Fantastic .... don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful song, but it never moved me in the way that it seems to effect others. I'm not sure what that's about ... but The Line (particularly the Cross the Line poem before the song) always has, so I might just stick with that.

Blue,

Where are you in the world? I think, with what you are saying with regards to seriously hot Prince music, spirituality and self-development, I might need to squeeze a little time into my hectic work schedule, to send you some music.

Yes, whilst I hear what you are saying with regards to Power Fantastic, I liken it to The Grand Progression; it will hit you when you're in the right (or wrong) place, and when it does, there is no turning back. However, having said that, I do also feel that its inclusion on this project of yours is perhaps, at least for a Prince-afficionado, a little too out of place.

I played the sequence yesterday and, whilst it worked in my head from what I could remember of the songs, it actually flowed almost perfectly, especially with Rebirth of the Flesh opening, Shocadelica (the extended version) closing the first side (so to speak), the intermisson to cleanse the palette, followed by The Line (wow, I hadn't heard it in God knows how long), and, finally, closing with GOD is Alive, especially after the penultimate finale of I Wish I Heaven 1, 2 and 3.

It is definitely a trip, even if your friends don't quite vibe with it, I am quietly optimistic that you will, even with a few tweaks here of there to perfect the sequence and song choice to your particular style.

I think the title of the whole 3-disc set might be best served by calling it "GOD IS ALIVE" featuring The Black Album, Lovesexy and Rebirth of The Flesh. It just seems to capture the essential value of what that era came to be for Prince, as well as others here too, even if one doesn't vibe with GOD, if that makes sense; also, I like the title as it's quite a short, concise, some might say, controversial, statement; all trademark elements to any Prince work of a genius value.

Let us know what you eventually come up with; or at least me, as I am interested in these kinds of retrospective projects, especially when they are executed well ala BorisFishpaw's The Dawn.

Spirit

Actually, Blue, scratch that first side running order. Here's a far stronger one to contemplate:

REBIRTH OF THE FLESH

Side 1

1. Rebirth of the Flesh (Extended, originally intended to open The Funk Bible))

2. Shockadelica (Extended)

3. La, La, La, He, He, Hee (The 10+ Minute Explosive Extended Version)

4. Scarlet Pussy (Extended)

I don't know about you, but that list above is seriously FUNKY to me, the song choice, sequencing, and storytelling; classic underground and hardcore Prince material where he really goes dark, deep and dirty, musically. I would also have considered closing Side 1 with Bob George but, without wanting to duplicate its rightful inclusion on The Black Album, I've kept that eerie lonesome tale on Disc 1 of your ensemble.

love,

Spirit

It's the only way I listen 2 it now...very reminiscient of the song structure of the tour itself...which was my 1st Prince concert experience.I actually bought my ticket and my copy of "The Black Album" the same day after talking with a fellow fan in the ticket line who told me where 2 find it in Dallas.I managed 2 1 up the fans around me when he launched in2 Superfunky/Bob George and I actually knew the words....most of them were like......"WTF is THIS ????"

Spirit - Yes, I agree with your amended tracklist. Although "7 minutes MoQuake" is no doubt funky, it just didn't seem to fit with the rest. I only have one version of "Rebirth of the Flesh," though ... well, 2 including the live rehearsal version released by the NPGMC ... is there a longer studio version out there? The one studio version I have is approximately 5:01 long...

I also like the flow here, because Rebirth of the Flesh and Shockadelica just seem perfect right next to each other ... and although I am already burning the Black Album in its entirety, I wonder if I could fit the 1986 version of "Superfunkycalifragisexy" in there somewhere. The vibe of that song and "Shockadelica" are very similar to me ... kind of a moody funk that I just never can get enough of.

I'm thinking of putting the 1986 Superfunkcalifragisexy right in between Shockadelica and La, La, La... what do you think?

I think calling the set "God is Alive" is perfect, especially given the context of who I'm burning it for. These are people who are not religious but are working on acknowledging their spirituality, and I am constantly telling them how (among many other things) music is my higher power. This set just solidifies my stance on that, in a funky way. wink

Where am I in the world? I could say something smart-ass, like "I am here...where are you?" wink but instead I'll just say Ohio. I am always open to music!!! smile It looks like you're from Leicester, according to your profile. Do you know a band called Kasabian? They're from your neck of the woods and they played a rather blistering set here last weekend ... it only paled in comparison to the opening band (Of Monsters and Men) who was just phenomenal.

There are so many facets of Prince's music that one can be interested in, and it is refreshing to hear from someone who feels that same connection to his most spiritual work. 1988 was a gorgeous year!

No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Sex is not love. Love is not sex. Putting words in other people's mouths will only get you elected.

Haha. It helped me so much in the darkest time of my life, even now..it remains to help me! headbang

Thank you for sharing.

love,
Spirit

You are very welcome! smile

Yes, I have been through a lot, and some of those moments are very shocking to realize. I did not think I would experince what I have, but it's all apart of life. Looking on it now, it's still quite surprising I am about to pronounce anything. smile Thank God!

Anyways YES..Lovesexy has helped me in more ways than one, and I'm glad to know it has and will continually help many others!

Love and Peace to you!

It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Actually, Blue, scratch that first side running order. Here's a far stronger one to contemplate:

REBIRTH OF THE FLESH

Side 1

1. Rebirth of the Flesh (Extended, originally intended to open The Funk Bible))

What's this? Is an extended version known to exist, but not circulating, or is this like a wish-list thing?

blah blah blah

I never really found The Black Album to be all that dark, even with its lyrics citing squirrel meat and the imbibing of blood, etc... it always sounded life affirming to me, anyway. But then, I'm weird like that. wink

Good festival headliners, Kasabian. Seen them a few times now. Nothing like jumping around in a field in the dark with a heavy rock band blasting from the stage. Chemical enhancement optional.

Oh yeah that list was beyond funky.

Anyway back to the main point of the thread, SpiritOtter, I appreciate the efforts you put into your insights but perhaps Prince is not a person one should even consider looking to in regards to matters of the 'spiritual' no matter how much he 'fronts' it...as he's not consistent with it.

You see, in his next studio album after Lovesexy, he was right back to his 'Gett Offs' his 'Jugheads', his 'Insatiables' & his 'Creams'...in other words STRAIGHT BACK to the primal 'dirty' stuff...later still 'SexyMF'...you know infantile, teenager, lowest chakra stuff...for me that made a mockery of the so-called 'enlightenment' of Lovesexy. Prince is the LAST artist I go to for a consideration of spirituality. Not a judgement, just an observation.

Back in the day in high school around '89, my cousin was able to get a copy of The Black Album and after listening to it he was possessed by demons. The priest tried an exorcist which didn't work and his parents burned the album. If any of you has listened to The Black Album already then the Devil has gotten a hold of your ass. I feel sorry for ya'll.

Romeo are you actually serious? I can't tell as I'm a plain speaking guy.

Tell us more...also, why extrapolate your cousin's experience to the rest of us?
