What was Prince's best experimental recording?

Madhouse LPs? Kamasutra? Xpectation? The Truth?

The "Camille" album as a complete set of songs... A whole load of songs which sound like Alvin & The Chipmunks on Viagra!!!

If you're asking about just one track, I'd say Cloreen Baconskin.

When was Camille's last appearance on an official release? Was it Feel U Up on the b-side of Partyman?

I like Madrid to Chicago. But the Truth kicks ass no matter how you look at it. Every track seems to pull from a different genre. That CD really showcases the man's musical muscles. In my opinion, he can do anything - musically.

I'd suggest Expert Lover a/k/a Crystal Ball. I could also suggest 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton, or even America, the 12" version.

There would have been no Camille without that one. Thank God for Susan Rogers.

Expert Lover still amazes me. It was the first to come to mind when I read the question.

Album - Sign O The Times. This really is the standout - no other album sounds like it. There is some truth to the albums already mentioned, but they all have contemporaries that sound like it - no-one has ever made anything that sounds like SOTT.

If its just a track, well, Crystal Ball or In All My Dreams!

As experimental "oeuvre" I'd say The truth and Xpectation... Those sound so much "not prince" and very prince at the same time!!!

Hmmm... I have my opinions (and I'll chime in later), but first, I'd like to know what y'all's definition of "experimental recording" is.

With an artist as versatile as Prince, how can we tell what's an excursion vs. what's simply in his wide repertoire?
