Songs Rescued From the Vault

I've always felt that (despite what he's implied over the years) Prince is very much in tough with his older material -- often revisiting songs to include on a current project (a huge advantage to having such a well stocked vault).

So for the fun of it I dug through various resources to come up with a list of albums (Prince's as well as protege's) that contained unreleased songs from the fabled vault. I didn't include songs on compilations like "Old Friends" & "Crystal Ball" -- I also left off albums that probably have Vault tracks but couldn't confirm from any resources (Emancipation).

I'm sure there are many more examples than what's on my list so if anyone has more info please share! (Also let me know if I'm wrong on any of these...)

Interesting list, but if you have this info, it would be nice to list when these songs were originally worked on. For example, I didn't know "Head" was an older track.. when was it originally written/recorded? I'm not a Prince historian..

It'd be quicker using this http://www.princevault.co..._song_list click on any song title for all the info you would ever need.

Good point -- I'll update the list when I have a moment. BTW "Head" was written & originally recorded during The Rebels session in 1979...

Indeed that's where much of this info originated -- my error for not giving this excellent site credit. I also used DMSR and in some cases Wikipedia for verification

I checked this site after making my post.. it makes no mention of "Head" being from 1979. So, updating your list (adding when the songs were first worked on) when you get the time would still be helpful..

Again one of the other sources was Per Nilsen's book "Dance Music Sex Romance"; regarding Head:

A few of the Dirty Mind songs had been written prior to the sessions in the Minnetonka house. Head was demoed during The Rebels sessions in Colorodo in July 1979 and was introduced into the set in 1980.

It's tough to find copies of this book but you can read lengthy excerpts on Google Books

If Dirty Mind came out in 1999, it might have been a stretch to say it was a 1979 song. Since Dirty Mind came out in October 1980, it is realistic to believe that many of the songs existed in 1979 in some form.

That's totally fair -- I struggled with whether to include several songs for the reason you've mentioned. With the ones I included I pictured Prince pulling a older song or demo off the shelf for whatever project he's currently working on. Not an exact process and goodness knows I'm not an expert holding inside information biggrin .

All this is just an attempt to maybe dig up some gems of knowlege we may or spur conversation beyond Prince's hair and poop color while we wait for new music to drop...
