Could it be that !!!'s cover of "Extraloveable" motivated P to rerecord it?

I've just noticed that the band !!! regularly covered Extraloveable on stage last year (check Youtube for various live renditions). Strangely enough, Prince released his own cut a few months later, as if to claim the song.

Coincidence?

Sinnead O'Connor releases Nothing compares to you, then Prince starts playing it every two econds and releases it officially 2 years later.....Yep there could be a good chance that's why he did it.

Alternatively:

&y

or

Maybe he knew just how much a lot of us fans loved it, so finally gave in and gave us a completely different version biggrin ( like em both though)

You mean this cover? This isn't &Y. &Y is Andy Allo. This is also not !!!.

For those who dunno who !!! are:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/!!!

They performed a cover of "Extraloveable" in 2011. However, the above version by Yes! Yes! was much talked-about here on the Org because it's awesome and is a faithful rendition to a classic song. If anything, it seems P could've heard THIS version (shown in the video above) and decided to remake the track since he was in the studio with Andy Allo anyway.

that cover is amazing! keeps the original energy but brings it up to date - prince's new version (although appreciated) has missed the mark somewhat - the original version (or an original version with a fresh mix) would have been better.

Hopefully if any of the other versions said to have been recorded surfce they will be better.

yeah, i agree. that cover by yes! yes! is great. it's such an energetic song to start with that

i just fail to see what prince tried to do with it in his new version.

not that i totally dislike the new prince version but it's so different and so much less than his

own original that releasing it seems a weird choice. there were more mid tempo outtakes in

his vault that he could have rerecorded pretty close to how they were and bring the vibe he

brought with his reworked extraloveable.

i'm quite sure that these cover versions brought the song to his attention again and he then

decided to make his own "better" version, that's typical prince think. lol.

alas, his own version doesn't really cut it. not as a reworking of that classic outtake. as some

new song it would be ok. something that would have fit on 20Ten.

if he really wanted to one up all these people doing his outtakes or remixing his old songs he

would have to do nothing but release those songs in their original format. either on expanded

remasters or simply as another crystal ball type release.

altho the world at large would take more notice if they were included on remasters. he could

totally solidify his legacy as one of the greatest artists of all time if he'd release his albums in

remastered form, all with an extra disc of outtakes/same era unreleased songs that would all

have been solid if not better inclusions to the original albums from the era.

ok, once again i'm just rambling and forgot what the thread was about in the first place.

excuse me smile

That Yes! Yes! version makes it sound like anything else on MTV. It's electro-pop nonsense.

Prince's new take still contains some funk, despite it's shortcomings, and the end break keeps it above average.

Maybe the images of the pointless borderline porn in the video make you think the songs better?

I'm gay and I don't watch MTV.

The first half of Prince's career was based upon pioneering electro-pop. For reference, see albums like Controversy (first use of Linn LM1 drum on "Private Joy") or 1999 or Purple Rain. There's also a fair amount of electro-pop in Prince's mid 90s material like "New World" (originally the basis for the Emancipation album) or his 2000's material (see 3121's "Love", 20TEN's "Compassion").

Maybe you should just be concerned with your own opinion and not that of someone else's.

Co-sign. I love Yes!Yes! cover, much like the original, it is very upbeat and energetic without sounding like one of those pseudo house style remixes that Prince has often come up with (though I must say there have also been some good house remixes of Prince´s songs).

His own remake of Extraloveable sounds a bit too tame compared to both the original and the coverversion. I don´t mind the lyric changes due to his parents having passed away but I would´ve preferred a bit more energy and a bombastic sound for the remake.

By the way, I didn´t know that the group´s name was Yes!Yes! because I thought they´re called Sabre...for some strange reason that´s the name I remembered.

Yeah, I think this is what everyone said at the time it was released, or should I say, when Prince said about through Funkenberry's site about recording some 45 min version or some BS - which preceeded the release of the new studio version.

The dude asked if it was coincidence. He never stated that he knew for a fact he redid it because of the cover version.

But by all points it appears that he did redo it becasue of the cover version as it was posted here and then funkberry posted a few days later that Prince is re-recording it.

Even though !!!'s lead singer looks a little dorky, he totally gives the song the umpth it deserves. Maybe it's a youthful thing, the energy, I don't know, but Prince's new version is a corny soggy cupcake with sprinkles that completely takes the spit and vinegar our of the original. Especially that "heyyyyy sugaah, I know it's been a minute" with bongos playing. He sounds like one of the Golden Girls when he says that. It sounds like the neutered old fogy version, which might be true, at least emotionally. And I don't even have to say anything about the rap.

Anyway much props to !!!'s version and Prince's original.

Didn't ask if you was, didn't single you out and i was being light hearted.

Prince did yes, but he merged many genres in doing so and kept it funky with real instruments, unpredictable production and arrangements. Not present in this same old Yes! Yes! and even though his own remake was hit and miss, it still had funk, good production and arrangements, which also can be said about the later examples you gave (see horn arrangements in Compassion).

Plus, you like GaGa. So maybe your opinion don't even hold merit.

Maybe it's all the years of listening to music on 10, but I can't hear anything new, different, or better that this Yes! Yes! cover adds to "Extraloveable." It is essentially the same Prince song, which, then, puzzles me that so many people think it's somehow better than Prince's new version. Of course, it seems that to say that the Yes! Yes! version is better than Prince's newer version is really just fuel for the fire for people who are looking to use anything to say that Prince has lost it or his new music is crap. I don't know this Yes! Yes! band, but their version is more of a snore fest to me simply because it is basically the same as the Prince original. While on the other hand, Prince's newer version provides some funk flavor to a punk-rock classic, which gives me two songs to which to groove. Thus, I like all three Prince versions because Yes! Yes!’s version is nothing more than an uncreative clone of the original version.

I had no idea about the Yes! Yes! version. I take it it remains unreleased on record (since covering an unreleased song is illegal)?

It's very possible that Prince wanted to react to this one (if the dates fit) but then it's really odd that he wouldn't simply ban it, unless of course he LIKED it lol lol lol

It's to be noted that Prince didn't even care to copyright the song at ASCAP, even after releasing it himself... On the other hand it seems that lately P didn't copyright any of his internet-only releases...

although i dont like p's new version its still better than Yes! version. yes! version is just a loop and it dont got those funk accents.

yeah prince did borrow some electro elements back in the day but he made it funky, he combined it with his funk roots.

Damn that is a lot of naked titties and ass for YouTube. I wonder how long that video will stay up there before they take it down. That is almost soft core porn.

Anyway I never thought this was one of Prince's better songs, so cover version doesn't sound much better or worse to me really.

Whatever argument y'all got goin' on...I don't know....why I DO know, is that video is intolerably HOT...my friggin HTC EVO is NOT doing it justice. I'm bookmarking this thread....

The song, no matter who's singing it, is not some piece of artful masterpiece. Either way, its fun and shakable. I've played it in my household and have seen some nice girls(IRL), and titties(again...URL, not refrencing video) bouncing to it(other than my own man boobs). Some songs aren't there to redefine the music world....some are there just to get you to shake ya ass. This works....in all three versions I've heard, the original, the new, and this "cover". The lyrics r funny and toung.in cheek(even tounge in cheek sounds tongue in cheek here, lol) the groove is swift, and filled with flowing fills...fun stuff.
