So is this it?

I haven't been here is awhile. used to be a (multi) daily trip. Been a member for 10 years. I used to scour the internet looking for signs of anything new from Prince. I went and got CD's on release day (or midnight if I could find them) all the way up till Lotus. I have his symbol as a tattoo on my arm for gosh sake!

And now it comes down to the fact that I saw Madonna had a new album and I actually wondered, "I wonder what Prince is up to?" So I came here. And there is nothing.

Is this the future? Is Prince now officially a has-been nostalgia act that we gather to talk about the good old days? I really thought Prince, the true deep artistic forward looking genius, would outlast the cruising-the-shallow-surface-of-hip Madonna.

i think I truly stopped caring and stopped paying attention when he released Twenty10 in Europe and never in the U.S. And that point I felt he pretty much said F* U to me (not personally, but you know what I mean).

I've been a hardcore fan since 1982 and it just hit me that I guess at some point I stopped truly caring and even if he released something, I'm now in the "listen to previews before I buy" camp and that truly makes me sad.

But i did want to say thanks to all the long-timers here. When I cared, this was a great place to be and I truly thank the creators and moderators of this site for years of enjoyment.

He's got live shows lined up this year, Andy Allo has a new CD out later this year too, and his last release was Extraloveable 2011 at the tail end of last year.

It's true we haven't had snifter of news of an album for a good while, but I've no doubt he's got something cooking - he always has right?!

There's a Polish show listed on the front page. I assumed there were probably others, festivals whatever, I know there's no formal tour atm.

Yeah, I saw the thing about the Polish show after I posted. Pretty Man needs to do something closer to home. pout

Still waiting for official confirmation for Poland, and there are strong rumours of shows elsewhere (don't get excited, Genesia). Prince has been through seemingly quiet patches like this in recent years. We know he has been recording because a contributor to the Andy Allo project confirmed recording with Prince ... and the recent announcement confirmed anticipated input from Prince.

But we also know that Prince has professed previously to taking time out for his beliefs too, so it would not be surprising if he commits time for such purposes.

Prince is only one good new album away from being relevant again. His last good one imo was LotusFlow3r (less said about MPLSound and 2010 the better imo wink ).

It's a real shame and a puzzle to me why he's not pushed out great remasters of his 80's releases with bonus tracks etc. He must be one of the last major artists not to have done this at all. They could have done him decent business and perhaps given him a critical artistic reassessment, which would make any new releases sell better.

Also, Prince is in his '50s and perhaps lacks the drive he had in his '20s and may finally be spending more of his life outside the recording studio. If so, in the longer term, this might mean better new songs, based on real life experience smile .

He is one of the few artists I would never ever write off. If he keeps going, at some point, he will make great new music again. We may like it or not like it, but I think his talent is just 'sleeping' at the moment cool .

It's only been a few years. When Madonna released her new album, it took the same amount of time to make that one.

I had to go re-read my post to see where you got the fact that I was a Madonna fan. My mention of her was "cruising-the-shallow-surface-of-hip Madonna." That's a fan?

I've pretty much always despised her and her fashion-over-art view of music. I just find it sad that she is still relevant when Prince no longer is.

And while tours, interviews and collaboration are cool, bottom line, it comes down to music with my love of Prince. And the fact that he released his last mixed review disc outside the U.S. is what was the kicker to me. it just seems like he's given up.

It's been too long since I've had something to listen to that isn't old or bootleg. And I know there are other artist out there. I listen to a lot of them.

My point with this post was to talk about how my 30 plus year love of Prince has changed and to find like minded people to talk about it with. Not be told to go elsewhere. I could have figured that out myself.

Im sorry we shouldnt be even comparing Madonna to Prince, the only things they have in common is a similar age, and that they are 80's icons. Madonna writes lyrics and dances (badly), but everything else is done by producers, musicians, djs, rappers, etc who are popular at the time. Everything she does is to 1) remain in the limelight and 2) make quick cash. She is mainly respected for the fact that she has lasted so long, and not her music. In fact, what artists out there that you can name were influenced by Maddona?

Prince is the musician's musican. He is a beligerent, quirky and interesting person. Even if his records are not great, they are at least interesting. Even now in his 50's on twenty ten there were some interesting songs on there and I think he is capable of making an extremely good album given the time, and perhaps this is why it's taking so long to get the next album out. I wouldnt be surpised if the next album was a quadruple CD.

yup this is it ... its over ..

prince got the hint .. instead of quantity people want quality

he may think he can write hits for ever but that ship has sailed, right now he needs to come up with one good record ... one

not 40 half assed songs he tossed off in a day

just one good record with like 10 really really good songs

if it takes 5 years and deleting 200 bad song ideas to make it happen that is what he needs to do

has he ever skipped 2 years?

i think he knows his fans are fed up. I know that i thought 12 bucks was decent for lotus tripple record .. but the fact is .. I can't listen to that cd without getting pissed at its lack of quality songs

same with 2010 and all the way back to gold .. yup only 12 bucks but 12 bucks for nothing gets old after a while .. i was so glad 2010 was free .. and i will need to hear something that sounds like quality to spend money on a prince release again .. i've bought everything but been disappointed long enough now that i really don't think prince deserves the benefit of the doubt anymore .. i used to buy the cds as soon as they came out .. now its just not worth all the fuss

if prince has a clue at all, he will stop churning out tunes for the sake of it and try something truly impressive .. something that is so good nobody could deny

if he waits another year or two and puts out another clunker he must know he is done for .. i can only hope he is really gonna try to make something good this time .. but that extraloveable single does not inspire much hope at all .. ugh

I hope he'll release a new album this year... but I doubt it tbh....

Also the show in Poland isn't true and will not happen.. now I hear rumors about him touring Australia but also about that I have my doubts.

It's sad, I agree.. I hope he'll release something new soon.

And btw, I'm a HUGE Madonna fan, so I'll not comment on the comments about her some people just..... lol

You guys sound like we're talking about....i don't know....Bob Dylan or something....This is PRINCE, the best musician ever to walk the face of this earth (for crying out loud)....

and we're comparing his work to Madonna's????????

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

He is not a factory. He is a musician. Sometimes it takes time. Sometimes there are quiet periods. When he has nothing new I just go through the great stuff from the past. There is so much.Invention takes time and space.

I think my point may have been missed. It's not really about how long it's been (though the last CD not even coming out in the US still irks me)

It's not about Madonna (I just mentioned her new CD as the reason I started to wonder what the old boy was up too)

it's more the fact that the spark seems to be gone Even on the stuff that's ben released , something is missing. I hope the time off resolves that. Up till now there has been too much wrapped up in religion, money, paranoia. It all seems too calculated and with an agenda. There doesn't seem to be any pure creativity and joy in the music anymore.

it sounds...desperate.
