You're welcome.
I hear what you are saying on the vocal tracks and the the overdubbing. My gut feeling always was that it wasn't really about his voice. I've always thought his vocal abilities have remained fairly stable. For me, it was more about him learning studio production. techniques, etc and how to achieve the sound he wanted in studio. Again, he was self-taught and I think that is why For You has the rawer sound as he was just learning.

Some of you prince fanatics crack me up. You seem like the type of person that still thinks prince came up with every note of every chord on every song by himself. You sound childish. Also do you know anything about music production ?? I dabble a little with pro tools, Cakewalk's Sonar, The steinberg nunendo recording studio and Reason. I was just giving my humble opinion on the vocals on that particular album and some of you dummies got your panties in a bunch. Im sure im not the only one that thinks the vocals on the for you album could have been better. Some of you people act like For You was the greatest thing prince ever did. Hell the album didn't even go gold when it was first released so miss me with your stupid ass comments. I use to be like you, getting all defensive when someone said something about prince that i didn't agree with. Then i grew up. Some people really need to stop drinking the purple cool aid.

That's the thing i don't understand. I never said the album was bad i said i think the vocals were kind bad(or sucked). Im like you in I wish the vocals were better but i like the album nevertheless. The album is good but its not in my top 7 or 8 best prince albums. [Edited 3/31/12 16:33pm] Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

Prince singing falsetto for a whole album can be a bit annoying, especially when he is doing heavy rock music. For You and Prince had a couple mistakes imho, but Dirty Mind and Controversy which also is using mostly falsetto is still classics where the falsetto suits the songs. Prince had found himself and created a prototype on Dirty Mind. But it wasn't until 1999 he perfected the Prince-sound that would leave huge prints on the music industry later on. The same time he really created the full Prince sound, he started using his normal voice pretty often. And it's the contrast between his normal, to high, and to the low register that many has learned to love. His falsetto is perfect for certain parts, and was perfect on Dirty Mind and Let's Work, where it also worked as a provocative way of singing. Not smooth like so many others before him, but raw, naked and cocky way of singing falsetto. He was demanding attention, rather than trying to make people feel good. I love it! I'm not sure if this has been mentioned. but the different sound of falsetto may come from different technique used by Prince during recording in this early period. At that time he used to record vocals, while lying down on his back and with a microphone at the closest to his mouth as possible, to the point of almost being inside. This technique allowed himself to focus on the clarity of his voice at the expanse of its strength, but in studio it didn't matter. As the result, his falsetto was very clean, silky smooth, very fluid but lacked the expresiveness, there was no strain in it. I for myself have to say, that I in fact prefer this early falsetto of Prince to that of later times. I think that the perfect example of this usage of falsetto is My Love is Forever where it has this ultimate smoothness that goes so well with this great song. I also prefer his live falsetto from his earliest period, especially from Atlanta concert from the Rick James tour. The vocals and in fact the whole music is amazingly tight there, you can hear that Prince allowed no spontaneity but everything was rehearsed and trained to perfection, as confirmed by the band members. In the later years, when he would rey more on improvisation, he would butcher many falsetto songs during concerts. The voice sounded squeaky or it was impossible to understand the words...The thong with falsetto is, that it is an unnatural singing technique, and you cannot simply let go, go with the flow of music. You have to all the time consciously focus on maintaining a certain tension in your vocal organs. Then the result is good. And such was in Atlanta where Prince bested Rick James...
