True. The thing is i like most of the songs on For You. The musicianship was always there it just took a little time for the voice to catch up. By the time the Prince album came out i thought prince was a pretty good singer and without a doubt by controversy. I was always amazed by his vocal range. Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

1999. I don't think its a coincidence that when prince moved away from falsetto, the big time hit. The falsetto works as a style to drop to occasionally, but overall, the deep voice commands the power.
Can you imagine Little Red Corvette in falsetto? .

For You was a very raw and emotional albulm. I always thought he was trying to show his range as he was smart enough not to want to be classified by the corporate suits as to what he could and couldn't do. The vocals and harmonies seem fine to me. Prince is not a classically trained singer (and that isn't a bad thing). He sings from his heart and soul. This is what has always come through in his music and I think that is how a performer touches and connects to the audience. You can have some singers who hit every note and would be considered technically perfect and it sounds like mush, as there is no connection with the audience and no emotion. Then you have other singers who can hit the notes and then over dramatize the performance adding a lot of needless stuff on top. Even more annoying and sounds like pure junk. But, many people eat that kind of melodrama up and actually consider it good singing. For all the hundreds or is it thousands of songs Prince has made he may have a couple that are off but compared with the low out put of other performers(many of whom most songs are off) it seems insignificant. In regards to his voice I would never be so crass to say it ever has "sucked". He has a beautiful speaking and singing voice. But, some people have different ideas on what sounds good and what doesn't but to say he "sucked" in regards to his singing is a bit much.
I will take Prince's voice, down home style, and talent any day. [Edited 3/29/12 8:11am]

Anyway (over used lol emoticon).
Back to the "For You" album & the OP's point, as much as I love the album, I think the only song where Prince sounded self-assured vocally is "Soft & Wet". It was def an overview of whats about to come.
The other songs where he sounded self--assured too but didn't make it to the album, were his wax test to WB "We Can Work It Out", and "Would You Love To Love Me". The latter had a strong hint of the Minneapolis sound element that became prominent in his music later.

Not all opinions are baseless and without merit - that's a fact.
BTW, I wasn't "rude as hell" (neither was anyone else). But then, that's just your opinion and all opinons are........
I only see one fucking asshole in this thread. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

No, I meant "you" in general, speaking to anyone who was rude.

Thank you for your thoughtful response.
looking back i think it was wrong of me to say that the vocals sucked on every song of that album because that isn't the case. Saying they sucked was just a figure of speech. After listening to the album again i realise that the problem i have with some of the songs is the overdubbing or layering of some of the vocals. The songs i do think prince is singing well on are the ones where he is mainly singing lead and not doing a lot of overdubbing. The best songs vocal wise to me are so blue, for you, crazy you, and baby. Of those songs For you and baby are the ones where he shows his range and he sounds really good. The vocals on the other songs are passable, with soft n wet being the better and my love is forever as being the one that i don't really care for at all. Overall on the For You album his voice sounds a little thin and it sounds like his voice was kinda strained. Plus i don't like they way they miked his vocals. On the 2nd album(Prince)there is a noticable difference in his singing. He sounds more confident and his voice is more clearer than on most of the songs on For You. If people notice, prince isn't doing a lot of overdubbing of his vocals on the Prince album. The main song where he does do quite a bit of vocal overdubbing is on I Feel For You and his voice sounds very very good. I realise prince was very young back then and his voice was developing so for him to do what he did on those first two albums was amazing but i do think the first album could have been better.
As far as prince's voice now. The guy has one of the best voices and vocal ranges of any performer and although i prefer it when he sings in a lower tone, his falsetto sounds very good as well . Also he has a cool speaking voice. The guy has it all......... except maybe height !

Y don't you record your own album - so we compare your vocals to Prince since U R surely the expert at vocals. funky4noreason

Riiiight, the ol' snobbish, delusional "folks can't critique music unless they place/sing themselves" broken record.
Good luck telling that to the 3/4 population of planet Earth.
