Prince must have the best timing of anyone in this world....
I just watched this video and there were at least three instances where he stepped with Levy and Miko while his back was turned to them. He just jumped in blind. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Framing of ? Appreciated. I love this performance & song. As far as Prince seeming ahead of his time, yes I feel that in addition 2 him being at home while performing...'tis what he loves & enjoys Peace No justice, No peace

From the music videos and SNL perfomance I've seen the music and flow of the band seems a bit eclectic.

I always LOVED this performance..His screams are on point and he really manages to pull his act!
It's very DARK and 'Spooky'
WEIRD..considering LOVESEXY was to be a 'Rebirth'...But I guess back in 89' he had to go back to the darkness! HE surely did dance with the devil in the pale Moonlight! Haha
His dark stuff is GOOD! Haha It's Button Therapy, Baby!

It was a masterpiece per4mance & one of if not his best live with the look & sound.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

1. I remember where I was when this came on. I was on my way out to go clubbin with a freind but waited for the performance to end. I met up with him and told him about it like it was news event (Prince, SNLK being 15 yrs old etc)lol.
2. I again realized the ridiculousness of the Prince enforced video ban. We are looking at stills of the performance and discussing a video whre we cant post it or there will be trouble from Prince's camp. And we go on about it like it's every day normalcy.....this is outrageous lol.
3. [edit]:Now I do kind of see where he doesnt like his stuff to be shown because his performances are heavily scrutinized..look at what the op is saying about the performance. That the band etc is stiff, bland etc...so I can imagine Princes OCD self is just as criticial and doesnt want what he put out to be anything but perfect? Double Dammit! If the entire special was on that VHS except Prince's perf., it stands to reason he must've had some sort of objection to including it, dj. I've also been waiting for SNL to release season 6 with Prince's performance of "Partyup", but was unaware of the announcement re:musical licensing expense. I thought that, at least back then, the artists and record companies were getting free promotional publicity by performing on shows like SNL. What about the Grammy and AMA performances? IF the powers that be decided to release remastered hi-def versions of complete award shows, would they have the same licensing issues? Someone please explain the complications, if any, in laymen's terms for those of us who want to know when you have time. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one interested in these shows dj.

Somehow I decided to record that SNL episode, and therefore I taped this performance. I must have watched it 10 times over the next couple of weeks (which is a lot of times for me). This performance is one of the things that solidied my love of Prince's music. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Like some have said, this is one of my favorite live performances. "Electric Chair" is one of my favorite songs. The first time I heard it, my reaction was "I can't wait to hear this song live!" The SNL performance didn't disappoint. * And yes, this was a transition period, yet the band is still so tight. I know we all have our own favorite band members, but I can't believe that someone said that Michael B. didn't do it for them. He was like "thunder" on the drums! And for the record, even though I've been a fan since 1980, John Blackwell is my favorite drummer with Shelia E and Bland tying for second, Bobby Z third, and Kirky J fourth. * What I like most about this performance is that it is a seamless blend of everything that I like: fiery rock with a funk sensibility and R&B coordination. I wonder how much of the R&B coordination causes the rock fans not to like this performance.

I think that licensing for broadcast does not include license for home video release. It's the reason that many DVD releases of TV seasons have different music than what was heard on broadcast.
I'd love to buy a DVD that had Partyup, Electric Chair and Fury all on 1 disc! Would be sweet!! Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

This is one of my all time favorite live tv show performances from Prince! The fan blowing his hair...ahh so sexy. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I always thought his timing was a result of perfecting it through the rehearsals...but to appear as if he's jumping in blind is quite exciting. [Edited 3/24/12 18:04pm] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Gohi said: My opinion: it's just you. That's one of my all-time favorite TV performances of his. While the studio song sounds great, the live version has an incredible vibe to it and his guitar sound is phenomenal.

How blind(folded) he was during the Glam Slam video dancing with Cat, I don't know, but if his vision was handicapped, that was really good

I'm obviously swimming against the tide, here... but I still watch this and feel it an opportunity missed. Either that or a throwaway performance given as a favour to a long running and successful show. Either way it doesn't feel right.
And, further to the choreography aspect: we all now know that this style of dance was going to become routine in Prince's band through to the Act II tour in 1992/3-ish. Clunky and stiff... with the addition of the 'Game Boyz' (my soul gently weeps).
Still not convinced. I'll watch it again.

The things I loved about this performance were his hair the outfit and his dance moves. It was and still is bad ass to this day! I can remember watching it live as a youngster and thinking to myself, "No wonder I love this guy, he did it again" To Sir, with Love

The huge TV Monitors right in front of him might have been a bit of a help with that blindness.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I disagree. IMO it's one of the most visually and audially stunning performances he's ever done. The live version is waaaay better than the album version.

Except that what he saw in the monitors would have been the reverse of what was happening on the stage. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Im saying it is ridiculous for Prince to forbid youtube vids of his performances ...but because he is a perfectionist I can see wh he does..cause look how yall are scrutinizing each hair on his ballsack in retrospect. "Climb in my fur."

God I love this performance. Have got it saved on my ps3 and play it nearly everytime i switch it on.....absolutely awesome performace

I'm watching it now...
...after SOTT and Lovesexy the choreograohy is laboured and... well... choreographed... I would expect Miko and Levi to make those moves look more spontaneous... they'd managed it before
The music sounds lovely... It actually makes the released version sound very tame... but that does not mk up for the stilted visuals.
Sorry.
BUT, hey... I'm about to start a love in for Temptation, from ATWIAD... so, perhaps, join me on another thread?
