Wish List for Prince Relevancy 1. Stop working with Andy Allo.
2. Recognize that "working with" talented artists doesn't have to mean producing a waterered-down album w/ the artist's vocals as the only thing distinquishing the album from a half-hearted prince effort
3. go back (yes, to be relevant now, dig deep) and watch your live shows from 1993-1994, and listen to Parade. Listen to it again.
4. Listen to four artists: Santogold, MIA, Azealia Banks and Janelle Monae.
5. Make an album w/ these four artists as collaborators - bring on ?Love as executive producer to keep you in check from making another indulgent hallow shell of what made you innovative.
6. Release the album purely on youtube - and allow the artists you collaborated with (above) to work to distribute and push the material. stay back.
7. Stop giving interviews to the media - go back to how you were before - mysterious. You're above it. No need to talk about your faith, your disbelief in the internet, or any other personally held view that is irrelevant to your music and that only makes you seem kinda cooky. Remember - you're cool as hell - but because of the music you play.
8. Pick up the purpleaxxe - and use it often, and in public. Continue picking up the bass guitar. play it often. keep avoiding horns.
9. Listen to "Exodus." Pay attention to "hallucination rain" and "Exodus has begun." - People weren't ready for that shit in 1996. The public is more ready for it now. Lay it on us.
10. Get back to the remixes. No, they may not sell as "maxi-singles" anymore - but if you use the artists listed above, and even enlist the help of some NYC acts -- you can release them as mixtapes....and get back on the underground radio tip.

It's not 1982, but 2012, and Prince is 53, not 25.
Relevancy? Yall need to just stop and log off into reality. "Climb in my fur."

totally disagree man. I hear where you're coming from..... and I agree that you can't expect an old man w/ a 30+ year career to ever be "hip" - but talent is timeless, and if the man tapped in to the extent to which new artists are using what he innovated, he could become relevant - not in the "american idol" kinda way. There's no examples to point to -- because there's not many other people w/ his musical talent - it's not just his age, persona, and showmanship I'm talking about.

Agreed on Sonny T!!! The nerd in me is coming through - but oh how I long for a rock version of Love They Wil Be Done w/ out Sonny T's vocals [Edited 3/19/12 9:32am]

Exactly.
Prince will always be relevant, to me. The fuck do I care if 14-year-olds dig him? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Exodus is great HR is one of my favourite tracks ever - he has done stuff like that since - The War, some of TRC, Colonized Mind, off the top of my head, there's probably a couple more.

"God, please make Prince relevant to the mainstream masses so my friends won't think I'm uncool for listening to his music, Amen." When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Missing the point, and my definition of relevance. Relevance is not being cool to 14 year olds, nor does it entail being "popular" to the mainstream masses. It's about music. Today, being musically relevant has very little to do with being popular or appealing to teenagers. I was referring to the former, not the latter.

His music is still relevant to me, Mia etc are not relevant to me or any the people of various ages and tastes I know. Who decides what is relevant, you, Pitchfork, MTV?

That term could mean anything and everything under the sun. The artists you mentioned are essentially rappers and Prince has been there and done that. Just because they might be hot now doesn't make the collaboration 'relevant' any more than when he worked with Eve. It's all in the ear of the listener what is and isn't relevant. As for the appealing to teenagers I never said that. Frankly it seems the adult fans have problems with Prince's 'relevancy' and the younger fans just want to listen to the music. I met a 19 year old in Minneapolis for the revolution show. She wasn't even alive when Prince was at his height of fame and he still is extremely relevant to her. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Prince, please only talk about religion when it is in a form that your fans can relate to. Any more makes their brains hurt.
Please use the instruments that I like best
Please copy the specific songs from your past that I like best
Please become younger so that I may see you dance like you used to.
Go back to more talented proteges, such as you had with Vanity and Carmen.
In fact, why not just send me back to the 80's so that I can doscover you for the first time, again? My Legacy

really theres only one thing he would need, actual desire to be marketed to people. you cant be relevant if you keep all your work locked up Bogey and Bacall, peanut butter and jelly, Wall being on fucking point, is "classic" dipshit. An iphone is top shelf technology. Get it straight. This thing is 4g. -Wall the great

I see this place is as mad as ever. So OP, you tell Prince to listen to Parade and then listen to it again, But then tell him to keep avoding horns?

typing Monae, Santogold, MIA and Banks as nothing but mere "rappers," and equating them to EVE is a fundamental error IMO. The artists I mentioned are heads and shoulders more cutting edge w/ their "music" (not just rapping). In fact, only a small minority of Monae's songs contain "rap." I think each of them would feel insulted at such comparisons and being called "rappers." Sorta like calling Lenny Kravitz a R&B act. I could've thrown Radiohead in the mix also, but I didn't.
Yes, I get that "relevance" is a subjective term - and heck neil diamond is "relevant" to my dad to this day - but I was speaking more broadly in terms of cutting edge music that is impacting the overall game -- not whether particular 19 year olds listen to them. If that were the argument - I'd be the first to say he's relevant. I'm 31 - and started listening to prince when I was 14 - in 1994 -- his old shit was way relevant to me then, and remains so to this day. But his sound isn't on a broader level. If that's too abstract and general then point taken and fair enough. [Edited 3/19/12 14:28pm]

Janelle Monae is a talented young lady.
Santagold, MIA and Azealia Banks? I'd rather someone took a dump in my ears than listen to that tuneless shit.

1. Learn to separate his religious beliefs from his creativity 2. Realize again that u don't have 2 be married to a girl before u have sex, hence start dating again & get inspired!! 3. Get your own website 4. Grow your hair long again 5. Realize we don't want new artists (ie Andy) we want YOU & ONLY YOU Peace in the House of Prince.
