When Doves Cry Dear Prince.org,
Do you still dig the studio recording of When Doves Cry? Or has it long past its GENIUS value for you?

WILL NEVER LOSE ME lol. The lyrical imagery.. the weird vocal in the intro.. the solos(guitar and synth)..the vocal performance.. and of course.. THE DRUMS, always keep me coming back. When doves cry forever:) [Edited 3/14/12 20:18pm] Most things that I worry about, never happen anyway

Dear Spirit,
I still dig the studio recording of When Doves Cry. It has not passed its GENIUS value for me, and never will. The song seamlessly combines adolescent yearning and existential angst, with simmering sexuality and ultra funky rhythm and minimalism. That is GENIUS. It is not a bit tamed, it is untranslatable, it is a barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.

My least favorite of his big hits. I do not like any of the live versions (always thought he focused on the wrong elements of the song when arranging the live versions).
The studio one is... A deep cut. It's hard to listen to on a regular basis, for me. I probably go 6+ months between listens.

also the best selling single in the US 1984 according Rolling Stone?

[Edited 3/14/12 22:28pm] Bogey and Bacall, peanut butter and jelly, Wall being on fucking point, is "classic" dipshit. An iphone is top shelf technology. Get it straight. This thing is 4g. -Wall the great

Spinlight,
I hear you on it being a deep cut. And I also agree; it's also at once GENIUS and yet at the same time a difficult song from a bubblegum pop point of view. It's not like Kiss in that respect, which is also GENIUS but very easy to listen to.

Don't think I've ever heard a live version I've liked but the recording is note for note perfection. Not a foot wrong start to finish. The single edit is an abomination though.

Everything about this song is right... I will never ever forget the first time I heard it, mesmerised me... Still does. It effortlessly combines, love, sex, pain, passion and utter mystery, combined by it's lyrics and music. I loved it the first time I ever heard it, and it is still in my Top 3 Prince songs of all time. Total genius.
