nod I agree with what you're saying!! I'm religous, and I believe in god and all that stuff!! THE ONLY thing I can complain about is.. Why does Prince have to do all that preaching at the concerts?.. I think its cool, but I understand fans who's not religious...

It's not so bad that Prince has his own beliefs. We all do. This is my opinion of the matter: I was drawn to Prince because I was an outcast. I was the one who was different because I didn't judge people by race or sexual orientation as my family had. I wasn't the pretty popular one either. Here along comes this man who didn't give a fuck about what people thought of him. The way he dressed, the way he looked, the way he talked, none of it. I felt I was no longer alone in the universe. When I found other Prince fans, I found kindred spirits. Prince really didn't seem to conform or follow anyone. He just did he own thing. Now, my perception of him is that he is a follower and that he looks down on those who aren't like him. He doesn't curse anymore. He doesn't do a lot of things anymore, but now he doesn't want anyone else to do it either. I just miss the old Prince. The one that was cool. My twocents

EXACTLY, Stymie

It's that he did his own thing, even though he got a LOT of ridicule for it.

NOW, instead of being an individual, he promotes being a "follower"! He "lead" the sound of the 80's, and was a trendsetter. Now, his thinking is if you want to be a leader, "Too Bad!"

Kind of goes against everything his career has stood for, eh?

I don't recall anybody ever saying, "HOW DARE PRINCE HAVE HIS OWN BELIEFS!" That would be rediculous. It's when they are committed to record, and foisted upon an unsuspecting record buyer who is told "Women are in subjection to man", and about another's blood in your system. There's a big difference between THAT and the more ambigous lyrics of "Lovesexy" which marry to any positive outlook.

So what? Buy it, or don't buy it! Prince does his thing, you either enjoy his art for what it is and take his religious bullshit with a pinch of salt, or else you keep your money and buy something that doesn't offend you so much. It's not complicated.

If Prince released something that I really objected to, I certainly wouldn't buy it. But nothing on TRC or ONA Live has made me as angry as some of you people seem to be. Perhaps you need to get your priorities in life straightened out a bit. This is just pop music guys, it's all bullshit.

The thing that is so hard for me to swallow is that Prince has jumped his own ship.

I too was an outcast and Prince's music led me by the soul into a place where I was untouchable by all the evil forces in my life. If Prince doesn't want to curse, it's really very simple...DON'T CURSE! I don't want to be lectured about it and hate that he is redoing songs and even rewriting them to fit his current beliefs. Nothing will ever change the music of the past. It can't be done. Rewritting the Cross because he now believes that Christ died on a stake is the stupidest fucking thing (although his performance of it with Chaka and Graham did kick ass!). Who cares how Christ died. Isn't the point that he did die and shouldn't we be focused on the reason why he died instead of lecturing ad nauseum about how he died? I feel the same way about the cursing. Do your thing, but don't try and force your choice on others. I know his heart is in the right place but there was nothing wrong with his past. It was his free spirit that gave many of us the wings to fly away from the depths of despair, and if that is a sin, then we are all going to hell.

EXCELLENT post.

I agree on all points.

I myself have no problem with Prince's choice of religion, or what he chooses to believe. That's his business and none of mine.

But I am having some trouble with his attitude regarding others who don't share his beliefs, and how that atitude manifests itself sometimes. sad

No Jem - I told you not to attempt to stifle discussion, which is clearly what you were doing at the time. And this topic has now been done to death on a variety of threads.

For the record - I think it is entirely reasonable for people to criticise Prince's work, and it is entirely reasonable for people to be sick of being preached at. I'm not saying I feel that way (I don't give a toss what Prince believes, I just buy the music that I like). In no way am I silencing that side of the argument (which is what you did Jem, when you said something to the effect of "if you don't agree with Prince then don't post on this site" - naturally as site moderator I had to respond to that and make it clear that all sides of the argument will be heard).

However, both sides of the story have now been heard, and I wonder why some people are still so angry about it. Honestly, just don't buy his music any more if you don't like it. Pretty simple.

What a rediculous response!

1) With Prince, you never quite know what the next album will sound like in tone or intent (D&P sounds different than "Symbol", which sounds different than "Come"...) YOU NEVER KNOW 100% going in what the latest Prince album will sound like or say. Just that you find his music generally agreeable. There certainly were'nt any previous cd's to TRC that sounded like either you are "right" thinking like Prince(Rainbow Children) or to hell with you (Banished Ones)!

To take any pollitical view/religious view with a "pinch of salt" as Ian so thoughtlessly dismisses Prince hardcore rants, is overlooking EXACTLY what Prince's message is. People of depth, character, viewpoints, beliefs and morals have reactions to statements promoting differing approaches to life. Ian says it's "not complicated" to go along with prince. well, I think that's a simpleton's response:

Prince HIMSELF tested TRC during his 2002 Celebration on fans; Prince himself commissioned a sticker labeling his new music "CONTROVERSIAL". Ian: this coming from the MAN himself.

I don't think Prince's goal was to have listeners take his words with "A Pinch of Salt". His comments for intent about "gettin' deep" are VERY pointed on "ONA Live!"

Ian goes on to say that those who object to Prince expousing his religious viewpoints need "to get their priorities in life straightened out". What a telling comment- getting your life straight starts with self-respect, and respect for your core beliefs & principals that make you a person with dignity, morality, and treat yourself and others around you with that same respect.

Prince is making statements that insult or disrespect those beliefs ("X-Mess"), state a hierarchy of men over women ("Muse 2 the Pharoah"), and denounce all "non-followers to his way of looking at life" BANISHED ONES".

No, Ian, those who question Prince's statements, do "have a life" and do not appreciate Prince's judgemental lyrics. They are thinkers.

It's unfortunate for you Ian that you havent' or can't open your eyes to the fact there is more going on than "just pop music". Pop music is about walks in the park,or kissing your girl. You say "it's all bullshit"- Ask Prince if it's all "bullshit" to him.

You need to respect the fact that others don't live in a haze over messages any media conveys. Just 'cause it's Prince, and you dug "Housequake" doesn't make it O.K.

break...it...down!

like others have mentioned on this thread, i don't care about p's current beliefs. it's his prerogative. but if he starts tellin me that i'm in the wrong just cuz i say the wrong thing (leader or follower, indeed hrmph), then we got a bit of a problem...

also, one thing that one can learn from most of p's songs is simple: question the wrongs. don't be afraid 2 stand up and ask "why?" this is all we're doin here.

this is a bittersweet period right now.

Utter horseshit. Only someone who is weak of character would feel the need to be have their belief system completely allied with a pop star, or feel threatened by the fact that their musical hero holds beliefs that are contrary to their own. I am capable, as an intelligent human being, of appreciating Prince's artistry without always agreeing with him. I am sorry you lack that ability yourself.

Ian says it's "not complicated" to go along with prince. well, I think that's a simpleton's response:

I certainly did not say that, but in the absence of an intelligent post to make, I can understand why you would willfully mis-read my post. I said that it is not complicated to either buy Prince's music, or not, depending on whether you like it or not. If his work offends your delicate sensibilities, save your money.

Prince HIMSELF tested TRC during his 2002 Celebration on fans; Prince himself commissioned a sticker labeling his new music "CONTROVERSIAL". Ian: this coming from the MAN himself.

What has that got to do with this discussion? Nothing.

I don't think Prince's goal was to have listeners take his words with "A Pinch of Salt". His comments for intent about "gettin' deep" are VERY pointed on "ONA Live!"

Who cares? It's not Prince's place to dictate how I enjoy his music. He produces it, I consume it. That's like selling someone a videogame and telling them "you aren't playing it right". Bullshit - you paid your £40, enjoy the game any way you can. You pay your money for Prince's music, listen to it whatever fucking way you want to.

Ian goes on to say that those who object to Prince expousing his religious viewpoints need "to get their priorities in life straightened out". Back this shit up. I don't recall Prince saying that women should be subservient to men. Not at all. Back your points up. You seem to feel that Prince, in expressing HIS own beliefs is making an attack against your own beliefs - don't you think that is somewhat insecure and ridiculous?

No, Ian, those who question Prince's statements, do "have a life" and do not appreciate Prince's judgemental lyrics. They are thinkers.

Question away. I don't agree with much of what Prince comes out with - so what? It has never stopped me enjoying his music. I'm comfortable enough in my own beliefs and values to appreciate and respect the beliefs of others and not feel threatened.

Grow up. Seriously.

For the record - if Prince ever said something to the effect of "Only JW people are welcome at my concerts" or "Anyone who doesn't share my beliefs is wrong" I'd be the first one to tell Prince to fuck off. However he hasn't said that, and his BS sermonizing on record and in concert, as irritating as it might be to some people, should not be perceived as an attack on your own beliefs. Certainly, I've never let it detract from the pleasure I get from listening to his work.

TRC is for the most part an intelligent piece of work, and I enjoyed it immensely.

"Back this shit up. I don't recall Prince saying that women should be subservient to men. Not at all. Back your points up. You seem to feel that Prince expressing HIS own beliefs is an attack against your own beliefs - don't you think that is somewhat insecure and ridiculous?"

Although I haven't listened to TRC for a long time, I distinctly remember P stating that women should be in subjection to man.

Where, exactly? I want lyrics. Let's get this this backed up, and if it warrants another thread to discuss it, so bet it. If Prince believed such a thing, I'd disagree with him as I believe in equality. I'd probably still enjoy the music though.

Prince had his own spiritual beliefs which i kind of adhered to and somewhat agreed with back in '88 on Lovesexy.I don't think it's so much people are angry with Prince, it's a fear of the Religious path he has chosen, probably born out of ignorance more than anything.Though i've been reading up on the JW's myself, it's not something i and 99% of his fans are interested in hearing about and Prince should know that.

If he wants to witness, he should do it door to door, not on record.Michael Jackson spent his first 28yrs doing just that, more often than not in crazy disguises. To his credit he didn't force it on his fans by way of his records. Why does Prince feel the need to?

i went to check the lyrics and I concede that i am wrong. I thought about it and this is something Prince said to his audience at one of the Chicago performances last year. I apologize.

My twocents

seems to me he hasn't really changed at all...he still doesn't give a fuck what you or anyone else thinks of him or his beliefs right? he still doesn't conform or follow "anyone" (he follows god but that ain't just anyone)
he still does "his own thing" it's just that some don't agree with his thing so they suddenly wish he would change who he is. You miss the old prince...the one that was cool? yeah cause being "cool" is all that matters in life I suppose...LOL smile Hey..I think he is cool smile and I think his beliefs may have changed but he is still doing his own thing his own way regardless of the riducule he gets over it.
"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok
