SPRING | SUMMER | AUTUMN | WINTER

Dear Prince.org,

Do any of you find yourself listening to certain Prince or Prince-related songs more or less depending on the changes in the season? Of course, I imagine this will vary for each of us depending on what the seasons are like where we live and what poignant memories we experienced during moments in our journey of listening to the music.

As one example, I live in London, UK. During the Spring here, I always find myself eagerly awaiting what little summer sun we may enjoy in the coming months and when a slightly warmer day/week comes our way during Spring I feel uplifted and find myself reaching for particular songs/albums that capture that anticipatory moment. As an entire album, 1999 or Parade usually feature. And in terms of songs, I quite like the soulful yet hopeful ensemble, like Little Red Corvette and When Doves Cry.

In contrast, by the time Autumn kicks in but before the colder months of Winter are upon us, I usually find myself delving for darker songs/albums. Sign O The Times will typically play as an album during September, or if I really want something heavy, The Rainbow Children. And in terms of songs, I quite like Old Friends For Sale (the original) and Joy In Repitition (the original).

Interestingly, Batman (the album) always features when I want to regain some semblance of my youth. It was the first Prince album I heard and I was 11 years old (entirely by accident, of course; I was a Batman fan first and foremost; Prince descended as a result).

What about you?

love,

Spirit

Interesting. For me it has more to do with daily weather. If it's nice, sunny, breezy outside and I'm driving, I like to listen to songs that have that relaxing vibe. Get Blue, Open Book, Screams of Passion, Strollin', and Pink Cashmere type of songs. And when it's rainy, it usually makes me want to listen to albums like Graffiti Bridge, Come, Rainbow Children, N.E.W.S., or Old Friends 4 Sale.

When it's snowy and cold, so I guess during the winter time, it always reminds me of One Nite Alone..

But really, most of the time, I listen to what I feel like listening to cool

Glad to know I am not the only one.

I love Stevie's Fullfillingness' First Finale. Do you know what the title means?

The Black Album, whilst touted as a edgy collection of cuts, doesn't seem to me to be that sinister? It's more a party vibe with tounge-in-cheek rude twists.

In terms of a somewhat sinister mood, I find Come a great listen when it's dark outside/inside.

love,

Spirit

GIO, hello.

Yes, I am British. Why do you like the British? And what about Autumn?

Play In The Sunshine is, indeed, a great palette cleanser after the sinister dark beat of the album title track. Partyman, too, is a brilliantly embellished party funk tune from the late '80s, even if it perhaps sounds slightly overproduced compared to his critically acclaimed era of classic albums.

To be honest with you, Lovesexy is in rotation whenever my spirituality is in need of a boost.

love,

Spirit

Emancipation89,

Your response made me giggle.

I love Strollin' for those sunny, breezy days. Driving to it down a nice countryside road; could anything be better? Well, perhaps the girl with the ice cream, licking away in the passenger seat...

I wonder what daily weather makes you want to play Purple Rain, the album? Clearly, rain doesn't inspire his most viable commercial+critical album?

I hear you regarding just playing whatever strikes you in the moment; I believe it's called mindfullness?

Spirit

Cuz I love the accent Of the Britsh People biggrin And I like the Way that they Say "Autumn" Instead of "Fall", I like Autumn as a Name For a Girl Or something.

Plus You guys have The Greatest Rock Bands Of all times! Queen, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, Do I have to Say More?

GIO,

The British have all manner of accents. Which is your favourite?

British rock music appears to have had its time. You only have to say more if you want to...

Incidentally, do you know why is it called Fall? Is it to do with the fall of man or the leaves?

love,

Spirit

I mostly agree with this. Rain makes me love the instrumental albums, and snow or cold always makes me want to play ONA... I thought I was just wacky for associating that album with winter. Glad to know someone else does, too. smile
