What's up Fam!

Prince is a remarkable guitar player IMO, and there are many solos I deem outstanding and just beautifully done.

WITH THAT BEING SAID...

I'm very curious to know the name (If there is one) of the solo Prince played at the NAACP Awards back in 05, when he won the image award.

If you know what I'm talking about PLEASE HELP!

It's the last section of his performance, right after 'The Glamorous Life' he picks up the guitar and just shreds it!

You obviously can see Carlos Santana's influence on Prince's work and this solo seems very Santana inspired, if not a Santana song itself? Perhaps???

It has a sweet Latin feel, that is remarkable. I have been listening to it these past days, and wonder if there is a full version available, if this is a song? Or if Prince just came up with this on the spot?

I am sure not many of you might not be able to help, unless you frequently go back to some of his TV performances like me. Haha

This whole performance on the NAACP is one of his best, it contains so many styles and textures of Prince so well. The last section in particular is one of the most memorable for me, and maybe it's because I'm really digging Santana at the moment and this solo is very Santana?...Hahaha. ...Nevertheless..I just want to know IF by chance do you know...the name of this solo or was it just improvised?

If you don't know the answer to any of these questions..Then what do you think about Prince's guitar abilities as it pertains to the different styles he could play? Or is he just an average guitar player in Pop, like I heard someone say...

Especially since the 90s, Prince would actually not play any Solo the way he played it on record. On one hand, he just became such a brilliant guitar player that he didn't have to think of more than merely sketches and most of his solos are quite off the cuff, on the other hand it's probably a bit of laziness too. Can't imagine Prince spending hours on one guitar solo, as forward moving as he is (and as his live shows are, musically).

You're right about that! His solos are much more rich live than on record. Some solos he does on record shows his skill. Some that come in mind are: Boom, Colonized Mind, Shhh, Dear Michaelangelo..etc. I totally agree with you on your points. I wish Prince would just dedicate a show to just guitar playing! It's part of the reason I love The Montreux shows so much. He really shreaded and made known his skill there. I wish he would spend more time on drums too.

I just heard a live version of Jungle Strut back in the mid 90's when he has that hat on with the rosses! WOW!!!!! This man is just out the water! SO great!

I believe you are talking about 6-9-94 at the Glam Slam where he opens with "Jungle Strut" and literally kills it. I just got a better boot of that show last week!

What's Dear Michelangelo?

JK..It's a song off of Shelia E's Album 'Romance 1600' It has a beautiful guitar solo. Haha. It's the same one from "The Rapture" from The Scandalous Sex Suite. The difference is, the one on 'The Rapture' is much slower, and digitally changed a bit. It's one of my favorite guitar solos! Haha. One of his best on wax!

You should check it out if you haven't heard it, you might dig it?

Really?? I wished I could have seemed him in all of those eras! I did see a couple of the boots and his guitar is slamming! REALLY HARD! I wish I caught him in Montreaux! He was off the HOOK! Really slamming forward and back!

Yes the Montruex shows were flat-out sick when I 1st listened to them. Good set-lists to begin were a plus to go along with the clean-sounding boots, but when the dvd's surfaced I was like whoaaaaa. Show #1 was great, but show # 2 is where I really get my ass kicked.

Yes! Talk about Funky! That man was off the chain! You are so right! Perfect setlists! Who expected to hear: When Eye Lay My Hands On U or All This Love? I still can't get enough of 'All The Critics Love U In Montreux'/Empty Room/Love Like Jazz-All This Love/Spanish Castle Magic/When You Were Mine! Hell the whole damn thing is out of this world! Lol HE showcases true shownship through those performances! People discredit him as a guitar player but he is very much on his game! I really enjoy both of the shows! Just incredible! You are so lucky to have seen him so many times already! Unfortunately I haven't seen that Boot yet! I am getting excited to look for it and hear it! Lol! His performance on the show was decidedly average. Housequake was censored and done half-assed, without any energy, as was DMSR. In fact, the only positive parts were seeing Sheila and Morris/Jerome. Maybe it was the band he had then, but there was something seriously lacking for this performance.

I have to agree and disagree with you though. I agree that Prince by no means demonstrated his TRUE and Consummate skill, during this performance. When I watched it over and over, I could not help but feel, It was lacking something..When I first saw it in detail, I was not blown away. Which normally happens... Because we all know when he wants to put on a show he can very well do so! However, I think since he had a lot people working in his band, he ultimately showcased all of the members of his family, of music so to speak...

He seemed to be in a place of "Deep thought" for some reason?. Haha. He seemed focused on demonstrating the talents of his band. He had a tight band, and everybody was on key perfectly. He seemed to truly lack and capture his whole skill- AS One Man Doing Everything...

This was also back in 05'. Everybody seemed somewhat 'shocked' because, remember since the early 00's he reworked his famous 'Raunchy..dirty' songs. He stopped singing them in totality.

This is around the time he had a 'Comeback' and he did come back..with a new work and flow. AND he became a Jehovah's Witness..Haha

He couldn't say "Everybody, get on the floor, WHAT THE HELL you come here for? Girl, it ain't not use...you might as well get loose, work that body like a WHORE" Or..How many of yall people know about the quake..BULL SHIT!" Haha. Besides being on National TV...He had a new look and a new taste around this time. He stopped cursing, but I agree re-working the lyrics fail some cases. I mean "Get busy in the middle of a restuarant" is kind of lame..haha. That's a different story though..Makes me think about an idea of another thread I should start, here. lol


Overall, He did not come with the expected. He came with a jazzy, latina vibe..and ultimately I thinked it worked. '3121' had a fusion of funk, latin, and rock that I think worked well. ALL of the songs he performed had a sense of 'exotic' to it. NOT what anyone really expected. I mean 'Jungle Strut' was pretty much signature to the 'Latin' feel he seemed to want to create. It's not the typical 'Purple Rain/Little Red Corvette/ Let's Go Crazy' ordeal. He had to show them something else..and I am glad he did. Haha
