Beautiful Strange - The Album

OK. So Rave was a commercial disaster. But it didn't need to be. The material was there for a huge record (which is clearly what Prince had in mind). Rave is a good album, but the sequence is TERRIBLE, and there are a couple tracks too many.

Here is what I would have done. With the full support of Arista, this would have been a hit record, in a big way:

BEAUTIFUL STRANGE

1. The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (Rave Un2 Version)
2. Strange But True
3. The Sun, The Moon and Stars
4. ManOwar (Rave Un2 Version)
5. Baby Knows (Rave In2 Version)
6. Prettyman (Rave In2 Version)
7. Tangerine (Rave In2 Version)
8. I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore
9. So Far, So Pleased
10. Beautiful Strange
11. Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do

First Single:
Baby Knows. Cool, mostly performance video, featuring Sheryl Crow.

CD-5
1. Baby Knows (single edit - Rave Un2 Version)
2. Baby Knows remix
3. Everyday is a Winding Road
4. Everyday is a Winding Road (live)

Second Single:
The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (released as it was, but this time the video in a timely fashion).

Third Single:
So Far So Pleased (another performance video, w/ Gwen)

CD-5
1. So Far, So Pleased
2. remix, or live version
3. remix
4. Silly Game

Fourth Single
Wherever U Go, Whatever U do

with Undisputed and/or Hot Wit U on the single.

There. This would have returned P to the top 10. Keep the track Rave in the vault. Or release it on Crystal Ball 2, better yet.

Nope, it would have failed as miserably as Rave did. Prince will never have another huge record.

For the record Gwen turned down a request to appear in a video with Prince because she was promoting her own album.

This album and single choices makes complete sense to me. Also, relegating Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic to Crystal Ball pt II is an inspired choice. Well done, Jon.

I still think it would have struggled, even with promotional backing.

Incidentally, there is evidence that at least one remix of 'So Far, So Pleased' was made but not released.

But what's this track, 'Wherever I Go, Whatever I Do'?

Thanks for the effort !! Now we know why you don't work for a record company : all of this does not make (commercial) sense ! "Baby Knows" is a good song, but as a single... what a laugh !

You think so? my flatmate works for BMG UK and at the time of Rave's release he always said that many of the people at BMG thought Baby Knows should have been the lead single, as they thought it would be far more succesful at really breaking the album in Europe than TGRES or Hot Wit U. So on what grounds to you say that it wouldn't make commercial sense?

Personally I always like to mix and match the trax from Rave In/Un 2 with thos that may have been on High (obviously the album would have been released later):

1. Vavoom
2. Supercute
3. Greatest Romance
4. Tangerine
5. So Far So Pleased
6. Sun Moon Stars
7. U Make My Sunshine
8. When I Lay My Hands On U
9. Baby Knows
10. Man O War
11. I Love U But I Don't Trust U
12. When Will We Be Paid
13. Beautiful Strange
14. Prettyman (hidden track)
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

hmmm I disagree. Baby Knows is the obvious single on the album.. a hybrid of U Got the Look and Partyman - it has TOP 10 written all over it.

I agree that it should have been a single, but not lead. So Far, So Pleased would have penetrated the market more easily because of Gwen Stefani.

what stations would actually put a song like "baby knows" on it's playlist? i personally really dig the song. but all truth be told guys, the rave cd sucked. we as full fledged P fans tend to think that whatever he does is great which is just not so. i know a few guys at stations here in the nyc that deal with traffic, programming and such. even the remixes to TGRES weren't fit for many playlists. i thought the jason nevins remixes were awesome. he even had a neptunes remix for goodness sake!!everything they touch gets radio play. truth is all the remixes in the word couldn't save a sucky song.

i think Baby Knows would have gotten airplay. Sheryl Crowe was hot at the time, and it's a very commercial track.

As for So Far, So Pleased... I wouldn't have released it first, because it's a weaker track, less commercial, and Gwen was not the hot commodity at that time as she is now. No Doubt's Return of Saturn album was a commercial disappointment. True she did help South Side by Moby into the charts, but Moby himself was hot at that time - how much of it was Gwen?

With the right promotion and video: if Baby Knows couldn't be a hit, then it's no longer possible, period, for Prince to have a hit on the pop charts. Maybe that's the case - but I don't think so.

'So far, so pleased' was a far superior track to 'Baby Knows', which just sounded old, very old.i guess it really was a hybrid of Partyman and U Got the look.Pity it was 1999 not 1989!

This may be the case in the US, but in Europe, radio formats are a lot more flexible, playing a wider range of music - there are far fewer stations that stick to one musical format.

In this context, Baby Knows would fit in well with the majority of mainstream radio stations, particularly in the UK, and I beleive it would have received a significant amount of airplay. Although So Far, So Pleased would have done even better.
