It is a great album, and I doubt you'll find many people here who disagree. My favorite songs are "Lady Cab Driver", "All The Critics Love U In New York" and "Little Red Corvette".
However, I'm not really a fan of.. "Something In The Water" or "International Lover". I would've preferred "Irresistible Bitch" and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?" in their place.

glad that someone else considers this song a highlight. Whenever people talk about worst 80s songs, this one always gets mentioned; but it's one of my top 5 all time favorite Prince songs.

its farrrr from a 'worst 80's song', people need to clear there ears out and take a listen to it again! It's one of my top fave Prince songs too the feeling U get when U fall in love not with a girl or a boy but with the heavens above

Really?!?! Holy crap. I think it's absolutely, utterly brilliant.

http://prince.org/msg/7/362495 - this was one of the worst 80s songs threads, where it was one of the most frequently mentioned songs, along with "Free", "Dead On It", "Ronnie, Talk To Russia" and "Lemon Crush".

Pure Brillnance front to back with the exception of Free (which sounded great on ONA but falls flat here). Free should have been swapped with Moonbeam Levels or even Baby, Ur a Trip. "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

His greatest His apex. The pinnacle. One man band masturbating to synth fried funk. If you dont liek this album you suck. Anyone worth his salt cant front on 1999. His studio wizardry was in rare form here. Kitchen sinked it. Album no.5 for many bnands (Police, U2) were the ones that made them icons. This is just one in the naked city story of music.
All The Critics played up vwery very loud..is the absolute shit and should turn anyone out. "Climb in my fur."

I can kind of agree with "Free." I used to love it back in the '80s, though. Now I think it's kinda silly, but I enjoy it somewhat anyway.

The album was released only two weeks after my birth
What can I say about the 1999 era? Incredibly 80s as it was, take everything from the outtakes, to the survived triple threat tour soundboards, to the side projects, to the b-sides, to the albums itself, and you're bound to hear a song that don't sound dated at 2012.
I loved the arrogant, snarky, mysterious, animated, quirky personality that steeped in to all of the music associated with this era, as far as Prince was concerned. The rejection from the Rolling Stones crowd left him really hungry and filled with a F.U. attitude for daaaaays.

You're also bound to hear the most dated song he ever made.

Something In The Water demo sounds better for me... "Money won't buy U happiness but it'll pay 4 the search."

1999. You can tell that wasn't recorded in 2012. [Edited 3/6/12 13:19pm]

I never heard it. | |

Message wise? True, but sonically its the blueprint of many up & coming producers who are trying to capture that 80s sound.
Bring it back to the mixing board and clean it up, and there, you got yourself a recent club banger.
If we're going to talk about his most dated songs "ever", we can make a count down starting from 1990 till his VERY last album

Yes, I was just going by the lyrics..
I do think the 80s synthesizers make 1999, and moreso Purple Rain sound a bit dated. I actually think they make PR sound very dated. But I do think that 1999 is probably his best sounding album of the 1980s, in terms of production or whatever you'd call it.. [Edited 3/6/12 13:25pm]

It's my favorite Prince album of all, front, back, & side to side. It gets play from beginning to end. it to this day. If I had to only pick one, this would be it for me.

I know I already said this earlier, but I really wish he would've included the B-sides on this album. "Irresistible Bitch" and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?" are both all time top-20 songs for me. I think just having those two songs added on could've made this my favorite album. But as it stands, it's not even top 10 for me..

Can't believe it's been 30 years...I was listening to this album this weekend and it never dies. So many levels and depth. It is even deeper if you have the vinyl. The configuration of the songs is unbeatable. A masterpiece and Prince's commercial breakthrough. Check me out and add me on:

Unless there is real break through in negoiations on the World powers curtailing Irans nuclear program, 1999 the song is going to be very relevent again!

Not only was this album his commercial breakthrough, it was his artistic breakthrough as well. The production, musicianship, and songwriting just leaped out at you. This album also saw him began to embrace his natural singing voice. All in all this remains a quantem leap in his catalog. Most things that I worry about, never happen anyway

Phenomenal album. It was great in 1982. It's great today. DMSR, LRC, Lady Cab Driver, and All the Critics are my favorites.
