Prince Songs Written About Real People

I was trying to come up with Prince songs that address a real person or the subject was a real person. So far:

Bob George (Nelson George & Bob Cavello)

Billy Jack Bitch (CJ)

Nadeara (Last name unknown)

Lisa (Coleman)

"Bambi" was supposedly written about a real person, right? Or are we limiting this to people whose names we know for sure?

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

You are wrong on probably half of those. Where did Prince say that Bob George was written about those two guys? I doubt that's the case and if he didn't say then we both don't know.

And the content of "Lisa" does not suggest it is about Lisa Coleman... you may not have noticed but Lisa is a common name..

At least you got Billy Jack Bitch right

Condition of the Heart--I have no idea who it's about, but it cites a real one (Clara Bow).

Everlasting Now and Family Name would qualify, too, I think.

I think it's fairly common knowledge that the title "Bob George" was a reference to those two - even if the song wasn't actually written about them.

Likewise, Lisa was inspired by Lisa Coleman (perhaps in name only). Again, this is the conventional wisdom.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Condition of the Heart was some kind of early story plot 4 Under the Cherry Moon

And it's a combination of that and a note of the twinship of Wendy & Susannah Melvoin

There was a woman from the ghetto
Who made funny faces just like
Clara Bow, how was I 2 know
That she would wear the same
Cologne as U and giggle the same
Giggle that U do?
Whenever I would act a fool, the fool
With a condition of the heart

[Edited 3/7/12 12:08pm]

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Star Tribune article from 2010:

What's Prince up to now?

Prince has been moving all around Chanhassen lately, and yet he still hasn't found time to pay his property taxes.

Word is that he caused some excitement in the past couple of weeks by going to the city of Chanhassen administration building. A city official told me late last week that they don't comment on meetings until there is an application -- say, for a building permit, or, as has been Prince's proclivity in recent years, a demolition permit.

In 2003, Prince tore down the Purple House on Lake Riley where his father lived until his death. Then, in 2005, he razed his primary residence on a beautiful, secluded, wooded lot consisting of two parcels on Lake Ann.

Symbolina was reportedly observed buying a lock and chain at Merlin's Ace Hardware and made a late-evening stop at Houlihan's; both businesses are near Paisley Park, where moving vans also have been seen lately.

An e-mailer, who asked not to be named, wrote: "I drive by Paisley Park twice a day (taking kids to school). First I notice the plant was gone from the window, now there are moving trucks there today [Wednesday]. He has been spotted around Chan a lot lately (Arboretum, hardware store, driving through Long Acres neighborhood looking at houses with For Sale signs). What is he up to?"

The possible explanations for the Two Men and a Truck moving vans are infinite, although I am pretty sure that one of the items I captured on startribune.com/video is a table that can be seen among furnishings on the paisleyparkstudios.com website.

I left word with two men on the grounds that I'd like a comment from Prince. One of the men told me, "Do not take pictures of this property," even though I was on a public sidewalk across the street. He said he was going to call the police on me, and I told him I'd stay right where I was. The other guy made a threatening maneuver at me with his SUV, but I felt safer when he complained to me without getting out of his car.

Despite all of the activity at the studios, Prince apparently has not moved to get current on his property taxes.

Laurie Engelen, Carver County's taxpayer services manager, confirmed Friday that Prince continues to owe taxes on four pieces of property of current interest to me. Those are the two parcels on Lake Ann, one on Lake Riley where his father, John L. Nelson, lived out his final days, and Paisley Park.

Engelen said the current year's unpaid taxes, plus penalties, on these four pieces of property -- if paid by May 31, since he's already missed the May 15 bill -- total $126,418.24. The 2009 taxes on these same four properties, plus penalties, interest and fees, are $259,848.40 if paid by May 31. Grand total: $386,266.64.

In March, when Prince's delinquent taxes last got media attention, the total unpaid was closer to $500,000. But that was for the 12 pieces of property purchased under his name or business entities. Of course, rich people, like Symbolina, sometimes buy property under names unknown to the general public.

1) I'm pretty sure "Movie Star" wasn't actually for Morris Day, rather it was for Prince himself. The blurb in the liner notes for Crystal Ball, handwritten by P and his crazy ass, is way off from the actual recording's timeline. In order for this to have been written for Morris Day, it would need to have been from at least 1983. The track's initial recording began in 1985, IIRC. Further, considering its placement on a few versions of Dream Factory (and maybe the OG Crystal Ball, but I don't recall offhand) I doubt Prince is telling the truth here.

2) "Susannah's Pajamas" and "Yes" and "Feline" weren't really written about any people in specific, surely? They're just jams. I seem to recall reading that they were simply given random names. Someone should be able to elaborate on this cuz I definitely recall it being talked about by either Susan Rogers or Leeds himself.

1) yeah, it's what i've heard it was about Morris. It could just as well be about Prince or everyone who appeared in Purple Rain and/or Parade, could easily sound like Jerome too.

I don't think a song has to be written in a direct time period that an event happened for it to be about someone. When was Wonderful Ass written or when did Lisa/Wendy/Prince pull it up to work on it? Vanity left in 83 but the song was being worked on in 1986?

People say Mutiny was about St Paul. But I disagree with that one, because it was written for them/him and he sang it. Some say it was about Jesse Johnson. Prince from my understanding did sing it 'toward' St Paul maybe, but it wasn't about him.

Old Friends 4 Sale was written in 1985 but most of the events of that song took place in 1983/84

2.) Definately, I know Susannah's Pajamas isn't actually about her. (no words) But she could be the feeling behind the song. Or her pajamas. He also titled the live Parade era preshow cut Susannah's Blues. Neither are actually about her, but obviously their has 2 be some 'inspiration'

(I wouldn't include Yes & Feline, because there is no name attached to them) Wally now I don't know of (of course I've never heard it) but according to Susan Rogers it was mostly about the loss of love and friendship ie Lisa Wendy Susannah the Revolution, Wally obviously was still with him into the SOTT band.

I can, to a certain extenct, understand that people are interested in celebrity gossip as a form of entertainment but this is just creepy and sad.

Does this woman have a life? Doesn´t her boss read these "articles"? So it´s newsworthy that Prince bought a lock and a chain and looked at houses that were for sale? And what´s up with going into details about his tax situation?

confused Some things should be off limits.

No offence to Purplethunder3121 who posted this, I actually like that you posted this in a Prince forum because it gives fans some insight into his feud with CJ and thus an insight into Prince´s body of work, i.e. his songs, in this case Billy Jack Bitch in particular.

But...please, what kind of poor journalism is this? Her schtick is getting a bit tired. Symbolina? In an article from 2010?

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I don't know about Sly being a protagonist. But he has a strong presence in the 2nd verse:

Now turn the page, at an early age
This brother on stage, he was all the rage
He taught an integrated world 2 sing
The color u are don't mean a thing
Everybody's a star all the everyday people sang

He changed the funk, put it in a bag
Then he changed the colors of the flag
But u can't teach a dog new tricks if his tail don't wag
Don't know matter how much money u made
All the cars u got and all the women u laid
Mess with the flag and 2 them u're still a spade
