I thought he said he was over the internet? I think he was not seeing the music sales from his internet ventures and along with illegal file sharing he just decided not to bother with it as far as his music is concerned.
I do not recall him stating in the interview that he would never use the internet again in life.

Maybe that statement had to do with all the talk of censoring that's been happening lately? Just a thought. I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

his consistent inability to take advantage of the internet speaks volumes. the internet is actually something he cant control and so it is a major threat to him.

I'm still pretty sure he was referring to the internet as a way of selling and distributing his music is over. But that's just my take and makes 4 a far less fun soundbite to splash everywhere. Listen to me on The House of Pop Culture podcast on itunes http://itunes.apple.com/u...d438631917

Oh the stuff thats comes out of that man's mouth is plentiful. But I doubt he finds the need to explain any of it, He has a laptop & I am almost certain he uses it to shop for expensive decor 4 paisley

Wasn't the quote taken out of the context of him talking about music making money on the internet? In other words he was saying that for artists trying to run business, the internet was over? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

David Bowie said the same thing about the internets effects on the music industry yet no one blinks when he says it. I guess because Prince's way of saying things is less eloquent and more exaggerated for effect. Change it one more time..

Might be that Prince gets quoted out of context, and nobody cares to check, and thinks he's talking about the internet in general. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

he ran out of suckers to charge $77 for a year's membership to his website.
the internet is not over. the internet is over Prince.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes, what he said was more along the lines of the internet was no longer a good way to sell music, he was looking for more lucrative avenues were he could have more control of sales/distro. The news paper thing was brilliant.

I guess it's more like the other way 'round: The internet thinks Prince is over. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

And yet, David Bowie STILL has his own official website, www.davidbowie.com , which still posts up latest news and info about him, despite the fact that he is virtually retired now.
Prince is the only artist, as far as I know, that does not have an official website!! All other bands and artists have their own official sites and they really know how to utilize the internet, not only for their interests, but also for their fans interests as well!! Its a total 2-way street!! Prince just never had a clue how to use this tool for the advantage of all concerned!! It just didnt work for him because fans werent willing to play by his "rules" and fork out bucket loads of money to join his latest venture, www.lotusfuckup.com , so he then goes off on these wild cosmic tirades, declaring that the "Internet is over and done with"!!

Websites do not offer the revue that he is looking for when they are managed like he did. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Anything that Prince can't control or manipulate is "over".

x 2.
Also, whenever Prince says one thing, you know he's doing the opposite - to test the waters or save face or whatever reason, he's fully in on the social networking adventures of Andy Allo.

Exactly!! That's what it really boils down to.Prince hates things that he can't control. The Internet is this big, powerful thing and Prince can't find a way to use it to his advantage.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Actually, what you mean to say is the Prince (or anyone else) doesn't like being manipulated and the internet is this big powerful thing where morality and fairness exists in limited amounts and musicians get ripped off and stolen from without a thought from the perpetrators. For every one successful and fair transaction that occurs with artist's official websites, there are thousands more illegal downloads that strip rightful revenue from the artist.
And the OP mentioning iTunes as though it some saving grace just goes to show that the OP has NO IDEA as to how this works. iTunes terms completely rip off anyone who is selling their music on there and is actually sucking the system and artists dry whilst providing tidy profits for Apple.
That's why Prince said the internet is over - he was one of the first to try and use it as a distribution method and he's one of the first to realise that it really doesn't work that well. Its his business, so he can call it as he sees it. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Maybe he means it in the same way as he kept saying that "Prince is dead" in 1993-1994. You know, just wait for a few years and he's banking again on something that he thought he'd left behind.
The internet didn't prove out to be such a great thing for music in the long run. Not even for alternative music to be honest. You might hear stories about alternative bands making money out of iTunes sales and stuff like that, but it's a relatively small number in the end. In general people are willing to pay for only certain type of music and only for releases that are "hot". The rest they'll happily dl 4 fr33 w/o caring about whether the artists are able to make any money from their music.

In the late 90s,Prince spoke favorably of the Internet. He was excited about the prospect of selling his music on-line,directly to fans without "the middle man".I even remember his quote about file-sharing.He said it's "inevitable....like rain falling".He wanted the Internet to basically "replace" the record companies, but it's funny how things turned out.He realized that the Internet is bigger and more powerful than him. He's not able to control or manipulate it,like he thought he would be able to.So of course,in his view,it's "dead" now...lol...
