Prince, the preacherman

I find it both interesting & annoying when Prince has references to his religious beliefs scattered throughout random songs.

i know he's always been doing this but it seems to have gotten more common since becoming a JW.

Here are a couple I've come across:

  • All the none believers better fear - Willing & Able
  • make her take this ring & make love 2 me - The Marrying Kind (assuming this is churchy talk as he wouldn't make love unless they're married)
  • the promise to see Jesus in the morning light - Thunder
  • God - God (obvious one there)
  • Lords Prayer - let's go crazy

anybody got any others...?

pray Peace in the House of Prince.

The only song I have a real problem with is 'Colonized mind'.....I'd love it just that little bit more if some of the lyrics didn't suck balls!

There's no lords prayer in Let's Go Crazy, but controversy.

That fundamentalistic "accurate knowledge of christ and the father....." - part in everlasting now makes me rolleyes and wacky and chatterbox everytime.

Does anybody know more of the songs and the lyrics which Prince refers to the bible/scriptures/churchy-talk whatever you want to call it?

It's only annoying when sometimes for example when Thunder comes on and it's this heavy rock song, you get all into it and then he says things like: Promise to see Jesus in the morning light - what a way to sober up the party.

pray Peace in the House of Prince.

Only one of those were written after he became a JW. I'm not religious at all, but I cant say that it really bothers me unless it feels clunky and forced. I prefer songs where he's praising the vageegee over the ones where he's praising higher beings, but as I said... Doesn't really bother me one way or the other.

Prince has been doing this since at least Controversy so I don't know why it bothers anybody-it's what he does, it's him. Love it or leave it lol

It does not bother me, actually for me it's quite interesting.

As someone said he has always been doing this. He chooses to channel his emotions to God, while others use: Mother Nature, Politics, Non-Existence of God etc. Prince is not ashamed to use God. I think that is what really makes his 'Controversial' because he mixes it with sex and other elements we all partake or wonder about.

NOW, since he became a Jehovah Witness it has become kind of extreme. He use to say earlier on "I think you better close it..Open up your bible and see you in the Purple Rain" Hahaha. Or "The bible is the only book she reads, she's a peach!" "21 Scriptures in a one night stand" Hahaha..It's hilarious and pretty Prince in a way.

"With the accurate understanding of God and his law they went about the work of building...A new nation. The Rainbow Children".

But then again, how could that be "Preachy" if you don't consider yourself a "Rainbow Child" than one can merely skip or pay no attention to its call when he is blunt about God.

Listen to One Song; that is his definition of reality.

Prince obviously feels a certain way about people as it pertains to God, and you are allowed to disagree. Just as he is allowed to feel that way. The problem is when one imposes that belief.

I always say "If I see 11, you can see it's 7..still I wish you heaven" Meaning..if you don't see it my way, I still will wish you peace and love.

With that being said; their a couple of songs with seemingly aggressive and imposing overtones. Songs like:

"Love is God, God is love
Girls and boys love God above" - Anna Stesia

"Sacred is the prayer that asks for nothing" (Although that is more allowed interpretation than the others...lol) - The Love We Make

I can't of many BLUNT references to his believes outside 'TRC' though, and even if you don't see it that way he says it..I would just ignore it. It should not define or shape you negatively, if so...Study and ponder what it is he is saying... It is what it is. smile

He HAS been doing it since his genesis on the scene..& I don't think he will ever change in that.

I wish he would just come on YouTube like everyone else and put his music and live performances there for everyone to see..But is he? Probably not..lol

It's Button Therapy, Baby!
