Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother, Wife Just checking out disc 2 of Emancipation again and I still love the whole disc except this song just to cheesy for me and damn near made me throw up my sunday breakfast I know Prince had to be mentally in a great place to write it, but damn it's like way to much for me Maybe it's just me Opinions?

You're listening to Emancipation and complaining about cheesiness?

it is just a song about his new wife. It is a hard song because he give hisself to one lady. He is not sharing.

I know Prince didn't rip off this song, but it's funny that a corny country guy like Mac Davis wrote a song along those same lines 20 years earlier!

Yeah its pretty corny, but I find most of that album lovably corny. Even the non-romantic songs are corny as hell.
"Get Yo Groove On", "We Gets Up", and "Mr Happy" sounded 15 years old by the time they were released. And not on the good side of vintage, either.

Corny-ness in a marriage song is normal because marriage is a corny thing. I don't get the hate for this song at all, it's a beautiful love ballad. How can anyone dismiss those amazing vocals? I love it a lot and it remains on my shuffle along with In This Bed I Scream. I have mixed feelings about Emancipation, but when I talk about this song, the positives come out.

I don't find it "corny"... just boring.
As I said in another thread, a 7 minute long slow love song, coming at the end of a CD full of (better) slow love songs, like "Soul Sanctuary", "Dreamin' About U", "The Holy River", "Savior", etc..... this song just bores me. It's not terrible, but there's no reason to listen to it when I could be listening to the aforementioned better love songs from Emancipation.

I like it too, a lot! I'll admit it, & won't even hide in the box. His voice is way up there, and the screams work 4 me. I can't even get mad when a man makes a song about his woman and it sounds like this.
and if I ever made U cry all I have 2 do is think about & I just wanna die (just wanna break down and die, die...)
Yeah, lovin' it.......

Yeah, lovin' it..... Yea this is one of my favorite ballads of his. Gotta love when he uses his higher register...so many emotions expressed in that song!

I disagree with Nurse:
the only song on Disc 2 I really dislike is Sex In The Summer (and The Plan instrumental, but does that count?). And I forgot: Let's have a Baby... nono...
Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother, Wife <-- this song I like.
Sweet love song.
ps.
Sorry for posting somethin positive here - for once, haha!
I have got used to Emancipation after many listenings over the years..... about 8/10
My iPod playlist includes 30 - I am only deleting 6 songs from the Emancipation album... Prince 4Ever.

I still think "Friend, Lover..." is one of the better.

my 2 favourite songs off emancipation i don't find it corny, i love the lush, sumptuous feel. if i was a girl it would melt my knickers! lyrically brilliant too, who else but prince could claim that he was a slut yet still make it sound romantic? echoes of marvin gaye. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....
