ALL HAIL THE FUNK UPTO 1999 - On my Pod is a little section of 20 trax titled 'PRINCE-OLD FUNK'. Had it on last night and I really had forgotten how good they were. If his career had ended at that point just before Purple Rain had hit it would have been enough. What really stands out are these:
The bass and kick drum - it makes the car shake but doesn't over power Chicken grease guitar - drippin' off so many trax The synths - no horns just cold, hard keys smokin' on each joint The sexy lyrics - this is why P & the Revolution would can't work - he can't touch the filth! The Funk - especailly the 1999 trax, simple, stripped down, tight and each one has a standout melody. The energy-every instrument and all the vocals reach out as if they have something to prove.
These trax are amazing, the man and the band were totally unique - pointless wising he'd go there again - just enjoy the stuff we got!.

you know them all, these are all burned onto our souls. Just in case I'm talking about the obvious trax, no B-Sides, no bootlegs etc so:
HEAD CONTROVERSY LADY CAB DRIVER SEXUALITY PARTYUP 1999 DMSR SEXY DANCER etc.

Im with you on this one. my favorite Prince music is the Dirty Mind - Controversy period. expecially the live performances. His renditions of "Head" were epic with those chicken grease funk licks.

Thanks. That's also my favorite Prince period. After Purple Rain I do appreciate the more experimental stuff he did but from Dirty Mind through 1999 (and some of Purple Rain), you can't beat that in yo face funk.

to me that time period was all about the funk/rock/punk/new wave fusion... and i think it was perfected with the song Computer blue. not to mention how young dude was during this time. remarkable !
