Prince's Purple Utopia

I've always appreciated utopian ideas & hippie estates

Prince's utopian songs & messages I've always love searching out

I also love photos that represent any of those ideas

What are you favorite utopian songs or line in a song and why?

Here is one of my favorite lines

Has a very artist commune feel to it

Very hippie-ish and I think any artists

at one time have looked for something like this...

Around the world in a day

Oh yeah!
All the little babies sing around the world
A government of love and music boundless in its unifying power
A nation of art 2 production
Sharing ideas, a shower of flowers

Paisley Park for sure is one of my favorites!!!

"See the man cry as the city condemns where he lives
Memories die but taxes he'll still have 2 give
(Who?) Whoever said that elephants were stronger than mules?
Come 2 the Park and play with us
There aren't any rules in Paisley Park"

I love this idea of Utopia he brings to light.

OF course I love UPTOWN TOO!

"Now where I come from
We don't let society tell us how it's supposed 2 be
Our clothes, our hair, we don't care
It's all about being there"

"People call me rude

I wish we all were nude

I wish there was no black or white,

I wish there were no rules"

I love that too!

I agree totally on these principles. It's just a way of wishing it was like that. While there really isn't no utopia in reality. IN MIND, it's a beautiful thing to feast on. It encourages and builds on a hope of a better world. A world, I still fight to achieve. I hold to these principles in the love and greater could it can bring. smile

You must not agree with the bolded lyric, as you forgot to include it.

Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince

Chapter 1 HOME

p 10-11

Prince's friend and surrogate brother, Andre Anderson, was also musically inclined, and the 2 began to jam together regularly in his mother's basement.

Upstairs, Prince shared a bedroom with Anderson. Despite being good friends, they were poor roommates; Anderson's side of the room was cluttered and disorganized, while Prince's was as meticulously ordered as a Marine barrack. Although he no longer lived with his father, Nelson's disciplined approach to life remained a significant influence on Prince, who sought greater order and privacy by moving into the basement...

Downstairs, he had much easier access to his instruments; already, Prince had started blending the distinction between home and musical workplace. Moreover, the basement became something of a private universe - a small slice of the world where he was in total control. A dark space with little natural light, it was nonetheless where he felt most comfortable, and it provided a prototype for the cloistered recording studios where he would spend the majority of his waking hours over the next thirty-plus years.

...

The Anderson basement - Prince's bedroom and rehearsal space - also represented his first attempt to create an alternative community based around music and, perhaps, sex. Years later in interviews, Prince would recall it as a hedonistic wonderland where he and Anderson engaged in carnal acts with a variety of girlfriends.

...

"My impression is that there were a lot of girls in that basement," said Howard Bloom, Prince's press agent during the 1980s. "He had grown up in the 1960's and the message was make love, not war. In the basement, he was going for liberation and entitlement to any sort of sexuality, pleasure, and enjoyment."

Can you tell us about Paisley Park?

Paisley Park is an alternative. I'm not saying it's greater or better. It's just something else. It's multicolored, and it's very fun.

I'd like to hear more from Prince on what an 'Erotic City' feels like.

I think prior 2 the release of MPLSound, in Paris he called it an Erotic City

I think maybe to a degree it feels like what we see in Purple Rain

Uptown

She saw me walking down the streets of your fine city
It kinda turned me on when she looked at me and said, "Come here"
Now I don't usually talk 2 strangers, but she looked so pretty
What can I lose if I, I just give a little ear?
"What's up little girl? I ain't got time 2 play"
Baby didn't say 2 much - she said, "Are U gay?"
Kinda took me by surprise, I didn't know what 2 do
I just looked her in her eyes and I said, "No, are U?"
(Said 2 myself, said)
She's just a crazy, crazy, crazy little mixed up dame
She's just a victim of society and all its games

Now where I come from
We don't let society tell us how it's supposed 2 be
Our clothes, our hair, we don't care
It's all about being there

Everybody's going Uptown - that's where I wanna be
Uptown - set your mind free
Uptown - got my body hot
Get down - I don't wanna stop, no!

Soon as we got there
Good times were rolling
White, Black, Puerto Rican, everybody just a-freakin'
Good times were rolling
She started dancing in the streets, oh!
The girl, she's just gone mad
U know, she even made love 2 me, ooh!
The best that I ever had, oh yeah
I don't usually talk 2 strangers
This time it's alright
See, she got me hot, I couldn't stop
Good times were rolling all night, all night, yeah

Now where I come from, we don't give a damn
We do whatever we please
It ain't about no downtown, nowhere bound, narrow-minded drag
It's all about being free

Everybody's going Uptown - that's where I wanna be
Uptown - U can set your mind free, yeah
Uptown - keep your body hot
Get down - I don't wanna stop, no!

Dirty Mind

What picture were you painting with 'Around the World in a Day'?

[Laughs] I've heard some people say that I'm not talking about anything on this record. And what a lot of other people get wrong about the record is that I'm not trying to be this great visionary wizard. Paisley Park is in everybody's heart. It's not just something that I have the keys to. I was trying to say something about looking inside oneself to find perfection. Perfection is in everyone. Nobody's perfect, but they can be. We may never reach that, but it's better to strive than not.

I think the song Head, gives a fantasy of life on the streets of Uptown

the 'real' images that he painted, were too realist to not be true

Remember when I met U, baby
U were on your way 2 be wed
U were such a sexy thing
I loved the way U walked, the things U said
And I was so nonchalant
I didn't want U 2 be misled
But I've gotta have U, baby
I gotta have U in my bed

And U said - "I'm just a virgin and I'm on my way 2 be wed
But U're such a hunk so full of spunk, I'll give U..."

Sexuality

Stand up everybody, this is your life
Let me take u to another world, let me take u tonight
U don't need no money, u don't need no clothes
The Second Coming, anything goes
Sexuality is all u'll ever need
Sexuality -- let your body be free

C'mon everybody, yeah, this is your life
I'm talking about a revolution we gotta organize
We don't need no segregation, we don't need no race
New age revelation, I think we got a case

I'm OK as long as u are here with me
Sexuality is all we ever need

Reproduction of a new breed -- Leaders, Stand Up, Organize
Reproduction of a new breed -- Leaders, Stand Up, Organize
Reproduction of a new breed -- Leaders, Stand Up, Organize
Everybody...
Reproduction of a new breed -- Leaders, Stand Up, Organize
One time say...
Reproduction of a new breed -- Leaders, Stand Up, Organize
Reproduction of a new breed -- Leaders, Stand Up, Organize

We live in a world overrun by tourists
Tourists -- 89 flowers on their back...inventors of the Accu-jack
They look at life through a pocket camera... What' No flash again'
They're all a bunch of double drags who teach their kids that Love is bad
Half of the staff of their brain is on vacation
Mama, are u listening'
We need a new breed -- Leaders, Stand Up, Organize
Don't let your children watch television until they know how to read
Or else all they'll know how to do is cuss, fight and breed
No child is bad from the beginning... they only imitate their atmosphere
If they're in the company of tourists, alcohol and US history
What's to be expected is 3 minus 3... absolutely nothing

Stand Up, Organize
We need a new breed...Leaders, Stand Up, Organize
I wanna be in the new breed, Stand up, Organize
Sexuality is all I'll ever need
Sexuality, I'm gonna let my body be free
Sexuality is all I'll ever need
Sexuality, I'm gonna let my body be free
Sexuality

We wanna play in the sunshine
We wanna be free
Without the help of a Margarita or Exstacy
We wanna kick like we used 2
Sign up on the dotted line
We gonna dance every dance
Like it's gonna be the last time

We got 2 play in the sunshine
Turn all the lights up 2 10
I want 2 meet U (meet U), kiss U (kiss U),
love U (love U), and miss U (miss U)
Do it all over again, do it all over again

We gonna play in the sunshine
We're gonna get over
I'm feelin' kind of lucky 2 night
I'm gonna find my 4-leaf clover
Before my life is done
Some way, some how, I'm gonna have fun

Play in the sunshine

We gonna love all our enemies
Till the gorilla falls off the wall
We're gonna rock him
We're gonna roll him
We're gonna teach him that love will make him tall (somehow)

Aah, pop goes the music
When the big white rabbit begin 2 talk
And the color green will make your best friends leave ya
It will make them do the walk
But that's cool
Cuz one day, everyday will be a yellow day
and let's play

We gonna play in the sunshine
We're gonna get over
I'm feelin' kind of lucky 2 night
I'm gonna find my 4-leaf clover
Before my life is done
Some way, some how, I'm gonna have fun

play, play, play, play, play, play, play

It's time 4 new education
The former rules don't apply
We need a power structure that breeds production
Instead of jacks who vandalize

no one man will be ruler, therefore love must rule us all
dishonesty, anger, fear, jealousy and greed will fall
Love can save us all

Everybody wants 2 find Graffiti Bridge
(people throw away your arms of fire)
A bridge that leads
A bridge that leads them 2 a love they know is real
(let democracy take u higher)

note the last line

Thanks Timmy84, here's a good addition to the Purple Utopia:

It don't matter clothes U're wearin'
Or your hair
If U're freaky, they don't care and
They don't stare (Ain't nobody lookin' at U)
All that matters if U're happy
And if U're there (Are U there')
Don't U wanna roll 2 the rock and rumble
Calhoun Square' (Don't U wanna' Come on now)

Hey!

Meet me there
If U dare
Calhoun Square!

Walk through veils of many colors
If U dare (Do U dare')
Jasmine, peach and love 4 others
In the air (It's all in the air)
Don't be shocked 2 see your mother
In the chair (Sit down, baby)
Everybody roll 2 the rock and rumble
Calhoun Square (Oh Lord)

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

~* The only love there is, is the love "we" make *~

Take your pick from the Japanese robes and sandals
Drink champagne from a glass with chocolate handles

Look over there (look over there), there's another turn on
Butterflies scared that they're gonna be awake all night long (All night long)
Dancing in your belly like a ballerina
In spite of your efforts 2 calm them down

Lock the door (lock the door) till U see the sun (Till U see it)
We gon' party like there ain't gon' be another 1
Futuristic fantasy
