My fantasy Dream Factory configuration

Okay, so I know everyone around here is probably sick of reading about the Dream Factory project, and already has the latest boot configuration of it and probably considers it as their official version, but I remain fascinated with what would have been the Revolution's penultimate album. I've worked hard and thought through every choice and each placement and I believe I have finally settled on my ultimate version of what the album could have been. I opted to leave out most of the Sign material and focus on the band songs and even made the tough choices of leaving out certain solo Prince numbers like Movie Star and Rebirth, but I'm very happy with what it is now- the flow of it is fantastic:

Side One:

1)Visions

2)Dream Factory (with intro)

3)It's a Wonderful Day

4)Train

5)Splash

Side Two:

6)Neon Telephone

7)Strange Relationship (outtake version of course)

8)Interlude

9)In a Large Room With No Light

10)Wonderful Ass

Side Three:

11)I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (extended)

12)Crystal Ball (official release version with orchestra)

13)A Place in Heaven

Side Four:

14)Power Fantastic

15)Last Heart

16)Witness 4 the Prosecution

17)Old Friends 4 Sale

18)All My Dreams

-------------------------------------------------------------------

It all comes out to about 81 minutes (a 2 record set approximately the same length as SOTT)

Trim some times down with some small edits and you could fit it on one CD, but it makes a great playlist on the IPod.....

SOTT version is 6:25 if I recall, the version I have from one of the DF boots is 6:51 and just includes an extra part where he slows it down (like the guitar solo part). I understand why he cut that part out, it sounds a tad out of place, but hey I like weird stuff.

I like your configuration. It was only yesterday I tossed in anything Dream Factory/Crystal ball/SOTT related together, including remixes & B-sides to SOTT singles and songs originally intended for these projects that P eventually gave to other artists. I was aiming for a complete overview. Adding Splash, Old Friends 4 sale & Neon Telephone was a good idea, jtgillia. Probably should 've done the same. For now, I put Splash on my Roadhouse Garden compilation

Here's my list:

DISC ONE

1.The ballad of Dorothy Parker JAZZ VERSION

2.The cross

3.Power fantastic (w/ improvised intro)

4.Crucial EXTENDED

5.U got the look

6.Shockadelica LET ME LICK YOUR P' VERSION

7.Go (snippet)

8.Big tall wall

9.I could never take the place of your man EXTENDED

10.Visions

11.Adore

12.Databank

13.Dream factory

14.Can't stop this feeling I got

15.Girl o' my dreams

16.All my dreams

DISC TWO

1.Neveah ni ecalp a

2.Forever in my life

3.Feel U up

4.A wonderful day

5.La la la he he he FULL STROKE

6.Good love

7.Joy in repetition

8.Last heart

9.Hot thing

10.Get on up (cover song)

11.Rebirth of the flesh

12.The ball

13.Movie star

14.Housequake

15.A place in heaven

16.It's gonna be a beautiful night

DISC THREE

3.If I was your girlfriend

4.Strange relationship (Eastern instrumentation)

5.The ballad of Dorothy Parker

14.Sign o the times

15.Crystal ball (11 min plus version)

16.In a large room with no light

17.Sexual suicide

DISC FOUR

1.Starfish & coffee

2.Mavis Staples - Train

3.Jevetta Steele - And how?

4.Housequake 7' MO QUAKE

5.Sign o the times DMC MIX

6.Hot thing EXTENDED

8.U got the look WHITE LABEL MIX

9.Housequake RAZORMAID REMIX

curious what your Roadhouse Garden comp looks like, mightycow....

I still think Dream Factory would've been his absolute masterpiece.

Funny thing is I'll actually need a plumber for real tomorrow since the tap decided to give up on me. I guess that's what you get for tossin' that many songs together. Karma is a -- biggrin

I absolutely agree. P was at a all time creative high. Alas the control freak in him took over at a certain point, leading him to dismissing the Revolution.

As for my Roadhouse compilation :

1.Empty room LIVE

2.Our destiny LIVE (soundboard)

3.Roadhouse garden LIVE (sooundboard)

4.Splash

5.All my dreams

6.Wonderful ass

7.Witness 4 the prosecution

8.In a large room with no light

9. Splash EXTENDED (30 seconds longer than the one mentioned in 4, but it has worse sound quality)

I selected the songs based upon info I found at princevault.

Next time P refuses to pay for W&L's hotel room, the org should pay for their stay - we might actually get a real album out of it next time around wink

When (or if confused ) P gets his masters back (2013 onward, right?), he could opt for a Crystal Ball remaster instead of a SOTT remaster. When WB told him they wouldn't release CB, it was one of the very few occasions that P didn't get what he want in the 80s. Not even Steve Fargnoli, who usually smoothed things over for P back then could change WB's mind. I think P never really got over that decision. He was so used to getting what he wanted with WB in the end (Dirty Mind's demo like sound, releasing 1999 as a double LP, making the Purple Rain film, releasing ATWIAD etc) that I guess he was in shock when WB said no this time.

It's no wonder he decided to call his outtakes set 'Crystal Ball'. That set also provides us with a good idea of what P's approach to remastering tracks from the vault: sometimes tweaking them just a little more than perhaps needed. (As he's also done with the updated vault tracks he's released over the last two years.)

I would be overjoyed if P decided to release a Crystal Ball 'remaster' if you could call it that, with the original artwork (if there was any, I'm only sure the Dream Factory had finished artwork, which all of the Revolution participated in), original sequencing and topnotch sound quality. (The SOTT songs in themselves have been in dire need of remastering when compared to the sound qualtiy on some of P's other 80s albums.).

And to top it off P could include a bonus disc with songs from Dream Factory that didn't make it onto the original Crystal Ball configuration.

I think a box set collecting the best of the 1985-1986 era would be ideal.

that's a great tracklist, I might do the same. The only thing putting me off slightly is the fact that 'wonderful day', 'large room' etc are not circulating in top quality. It's frustrating when sources don't flow due to quality :( nevertheless, I'll give it a crack & see how it goes smile

Great minds think alike. I had a go at compiling this for my ipod. I'd already done something similar with 'Crystal Ball', again veering away from released tracks as much as possible in order to create an album as different as possible from Sign O The Times.

I've ended up with some of my favourite Prince albums of all time. Course, I still have the original configurations should I need them, but now my itunes library for the period has these beauties in it:

Crystal Ball

1. The Ball (segues into...)

2. Joy in Repetition

3. Last Heart (segue's into...)

4. Witness (no horns or W&L segue's into... )

5. Movie Star (segue's into...)

6. A Place In Heaven (Prince Version)

7. Girl O My Dreams (segue's into...)

8. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got (segue's into...)

9. We Can Funk

10. Power Fantastic Intro (segue's Into...)

11. Power Fantastic

12. Can I Play With U (Long Version)

13. Rebirth Of The Flesh (segue's into...)

14. Play in the Sunshine (segue's into...)

15. Housequake (extended mix I did with bits of 7 mins moquake added)

16. Databank

17. Crystal Ball (Full length with clare Fisher orchestration).

Works sooooo well.

Dream Factory:

1. Visions

2. Dream Factory intro

3. Dream Factory

4. Train

5. It's A Wonderful Day

6. Splash

7. Neon Telephone

8. 100 MPH

9. In A Large Room With No Light

10. Wonderful Ass

11. Interlude

12. I Could Never Take The Place of your Man (extended)

13. Go (excerpt)

14. Strange Relationship

15. Teacher, Teacher.

16. Cosmic Day (snippet that I've looped to make it a bit longer, hehe)

17. A Place In Heaven (Lisa Vocal)

18. Witness (with horns & W&L backing vox)

19. Adonis & Bathsheba (snippet)

20. Old Friends 4 Sale

21. All My dreams.

Again, works so well. Feels very much like a Prince, Wendy & Lisa collaborative album.

blah blah blah
