There's two extremes. On one hand you have curious lyrics like starfish and coffee, on the other hand there's crap like emale.

I've been listening to his songs since '84, HRB! I don't get everything the man ever says and even what I do "get" may well be different to what was in Prince's mind!
And who, except Prince, really knows what his lyrics are about - we can only make educated (or, in some cases, not so educated!) guesses.

Let's take Starfish and Coffee as an example. There are a number of different interpretations of the lyrical content of this tune and this is also the case for many Prince tunes - there is a lot of "double-meaning" to be found - this is deliberate, of course, and is a sign of a great writer.

However, despite there being the potential for debate over a particular lyric, the overall message from the lyrics is usually harder to dispute. With Starfish and Coffee, the overall message is that we should all be treated equally and learn to overcome prejudices over people who are different! That's fairly clear, but the imagery used in the lyrics is harder to fathom. It has been suggested that the song is about a special-needs child that Prince knew. Others have suggested that the song references the joys of LSD (in much the same way that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds did). With this sort of detail, one can only speculate.

So, don't worry if you feel you don't get it! Some songs are obvious, some are deliberately ambigious, some have more than one meaning - the great thing is, at least they have some sort of meaning, as opposed to the throw-away, "I'm heart-broken, all alone, on the phone" type tosh to be found in most other pop tunes!
