strange sounds prince fans have grown accustomed to

After years of listening to Prince tracks I've come to realise that I've stopped noticing some of the most odd/wierd/strange/genius sounds/intro's/ tracks

Have you ever tried to listen to the intro to When Doves Cry, realising how strange and wierd it was?

I feel the same way about the intro of Computer Blue. And the outro of Darling Nicki for that matter...

how about the strange Linn rimshot patern in Let's Go Crazy

Sometime it takes a non Prince fan and their reaction to Prince tracks to realise how odd some things are..

Good subject. If you listen to P's music through headphones you are really going to hear some interesting things:) Some of prince's vocal deliveries I find non prince fans can't get with. I was listening to tambourine with an ex gfriend once. The screaming delivery he gives towards the end that starts with"long days lonely nights" had her looking at me like I was crazy for liking this lol.

Most things that I worry about, never happen anyway

A friend of mine and I where listening to "Girl" in the car.

He said he'd never heard a song based on such a strange "rythm track" as this one.

he also mentioned the backward whispering thing in the background, the synthpatterns, backgroundvocals etc. etc.

Man, I grew up with tracks like these... I realy never noticed the genius ..I simply liked them.

What about the wierd ways in which some of the Joy in Repetitions come on. Or if I was your girlfriend and shockadelica. The abstract ways in which Prince starts his songs has always amazed me. Great topic!

Thought it was just me, but there are some strange lead-ins.

There's a guy on YouTube that shows how to play the intro to WDC. It's amazing what a great like that is. It gets kind of distorted on the record, but man! What a great lick!

i've always thought the nine seconds inbetween "computer blue" and "darling nikki" are, not exagerated, the very best nine seconds of prince's entire body of work!!

Interesting topic! There are so many that I find intriguing and fresh...What about Parade album? Intro sound of CTP & New Position? and the song Papa from Come...Oh and the most disturbing sound for me is the background noise of Others Here With Us......... eek

Not just the camille voice on If I Was Your Girlfriend, but the sped down backup vocals, the build up /speed up of synths near the end,

the percusive sound that accompanies the drums

Just try to find a name for THAT sound, it's all over S.o.t.t. the album (Hot thing, 4ever in My Life etc. etc.)

You realy have to listen as though you've never ever heard these tracks before (almost impossible, I know) just switch off the' auto pilot mode' and than all of a sudden you realise that there are severaL layers of bassplaying on Dead On It, not just one...

and the strange build up of synth strings patterns on The Beautiful Ones..that had to be a hell of a programming job in those days! (bet somebody with a technical background is going to correct me on this one..wink

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker had an interesting drum pattern, not just an easy loop, there are all kinds of Rimshot/Open HiHat patterns that seemes to be shifting..

the use of flanger/pitch shifting/Chorus/whatever effects on drums..

etc. etc..

Yeah one of the cooler aspects of Prince's drum programming (although it is weird to ears used to perfect robotic drums:( is that he played fills in live. Meaning, he would program a steady loop, but instead of programming fills, he would do them on the fly. Thus giving you the sometimes jerking shifting feel of some of the drums.
