Did Prince find his bassline for Come here? http://www.youtube.com/wa..._r7ocng3tE
The bassline for both is very very similar, down to the pitch... If Prince was inspired by this track, I commend him on his good taste - Bennie Maupin played with both Miles and Hancock, and the track itself is superb!

no. sounds nothing like it. haven't you heard the original "live" versions of come?

I'm not referring to the live versions, I'm referring to the released version. And I'm not saying the track sounds like Come, I'm saying the bassline is -almost- the same. Fine, whatever - obviously some people would rather digress than listen. [Edited 2/19/12 4:24am]

If you compose very conventional like Prince does most of the time, there isn't too much room for creating a really new bassline.

True - but there is room to find similarities

you asked if prince found the bassline for come from that track. the answer is no. the track started off very differently to the officially released studio version. it just progressed from one thing to another. and the track you posted sounds nothing like any of the multiple versions in circulation. and i wasn't refering to live versions, but to studio versions recorded with "live" instruments rather than the finished version that's mostly electronic keyboards and drum machines

Wow, the answer is no. Thanks for clarifying that beyond any doubt, Prince.
Again, I am referring to the released version. Please don't make noise by bringing all other versions onto the discussion.
And please go learn what a bassline is. Again, it's not about the tracks sounding similar, it's about the bassline (JUST. the. bassline.) being almost identical. Of course Bennie Maupin's track "started off very differently to the officilly released studio track", as you say - the bassline only comes on at 45 seconds!
Either way, I'm done. Thanks for sucking the joy out of an attempt to find a bridge between two talented musicians.

That's a great track, thanks for pointing us to it, but if you listen you listen to jazz, you will hear many similar bass lines.

..and every year, Come sounds better and better. The entire album. By far one of the best of the 90's if not the best. Probably the only 90's to age well.

Indeed, V1olet - but what grabbed my attention in this track was the fact that the bassline stays the same throughout, mantra-like - Come's bassline does the same. That, and the fact that the phrase and the pitch are virtually the same...

lol, so do you want to point out how progressive Prince is composition wise?

I gocha, but in pop, rock and funk, bass lines are always this way. Much more now than ever becasue of loops and such.
While we are listening to Come and bass lines, take a listen to the mightily under-appreciated Lettigo and the bass line. It's slamming head bobbing bass line that propels the track throughout.

I think he stole the bassline of "Chelsea Rodgers" from Hal Leonard. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Yes, but not as often in jazz... which is what got my attention. Sure this is fusion, but still...
Absolutely! | |

And then listen to the Bass line of Space.

The electronic bass of Pheromone is also outstanding. Could it be that the reason some people find Come so "dark" is becasue it is so bass heavy? I am thinking that may be the case. It certainly contains less of the bright higher octaves.

Do you want to name some other songs that "Come" reminds you of as a composition?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
it doesn't sound like any of the versions at all. it's not where prince found the bassline as you asked originally
now the answer is no. there's no fucking need to get fucking worked up about it

I hear what you're talking about, but then basslines like that are simple and many are alike. You could even draw a comparison to this bassline and tambourine:

Hmmm. You may be on to something - now that you mention, yes, the bass line on Space and Pheromone have always been a major factor (if not the factor) in me liking these tracks.
Regarding the reason why people find Come so "dark"... I have a theory of my own, and it has to do with the impression the black and white artwork and the funeral theme leave on people. It's the first look, it tends to hang over the listening experience... If Come had a colourful cover and a bunch of photos of Mayte surrounded by flowers, people could be calling it a happy/poppy album.... Maybe that's strecthing it too far, but I do think the artwork plays a role. [Edited 2/19/12 11:49am]

Awesome track, ufoclub, definitely a similarity! To the point of it being possible to imagine a mash-up. Thanks for this, I'd never heard it before.

Yeah, the artwork definitely plays a role in it, but in overall it's a pretty dark album for Prince. The subject matter of the lyrics and the way he sings those songs is very different from his 80s funk stuff. He uses all kinds of dissonant synth and guitar sounds throughout the album as well.
