snoop just lost alot of respect from me ! yea prince can be a jerk sometimes but that has nothing to do with his talent or his music... personality should not be discussed when it comes to a music discussion. prince got more talent in one hair follicle than snoop has in his brain. |

To clarify, Snoop didn't sample "Cool" it was Suga Free, it was a dope song too. (link - http://www.youtube.com/wa...5avOH07QA)
What I heard was, what went wrong is Suga Free and his team went to Morris & the Time to get permission to sample this and got the ok. They finished the song and started pushing it on the radio.
Prince heard it and had it shut down since someone didn't tell them that he held the rights to it and they were pissed!!!! Suga Free is Snoop's boy, so there's some of the animosity (Power 106 in Los Angeles producer told me the story.)
My take on this is, Prince has the right to approve whoever HE LIKES to sample his music. It's his music. Difference between MJ and Prince, is at the end MJ would do almost ANYTHING and work with almost ANYONE to stay relevant in the pop music. It worked in the 80's and early 90's. Not so much in the 2000's.
If this is true. This makes Snoops comments and the story even funnier and more petty. So basically somebody didn't bother to check to see who legally owned the rights to "Cool" and he's mad the actual owner shot his boy down. Sounds like Morris set them up for that smack down. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll play it first and tell you what it is later.

It is always torture to look at Doggs face let alone hear him talk as he can never form a proper sentence. What can you expect from a loser who has made his career off of disrespecting and degrading women and portraying African Americans as a bad stereotype. Gangster rap has always seemed like modern day blackface and that is why mainsteam media cant get enough of Doggs shuffle and jive pimp routine. Much respect to Prince for not letting this loser defile his music.

Wow, folks really took that comment personal. I think Snoop's anger stems from the Suga Free situation. Money was laid out for the production that could never be recouped. They may have really thought they had cleared rights, but, like most people NOT on the Org, they believed it when it said "Music written by The Time" on the back of the album cover.
A little due diligance would have helped them in the long run. For instance..
My band wanted to include a song written by Prince on our album release. We sent a registered letter asking for permission to do so. After 90 days we had received no reply. We then sent a second registered letter notifying that we were going to use the song. A week later we get a letter telling us we could not use the song. We sent a letter back saying we had already recorded it and were going to use it anyway. We then received an email that asked us to send the intro, hook and any "musical deviations." A few days later we got "conditional permission" to use the song. The conditions are things they knew we could abide by, so it was no stress for us to reach the deal in the end.

For us it was a wash financially. We did not have to pay any money, but were requested to make a "donation to a true charity" of an amount we deemed appropriate. We also can not release it as a single, and there is a limit on copies we can produce. So it does not earn us any money, but our version was one of the most requested songs whenever we played, so we wanted to include it. |

A bunch a hip hop artists sampled Prince's music. What the fuck is he talking about? Funny how he dismisses the fact that Prince plays all instruments as if anybody can do it. That's why Snoop Dog is featured in Katy Perry, Big Time Rush, Far East Movement songs because he has no credibility as a rapper but a fucking sellout.
Before December 31, 1999, it was a lot easier for hip-hop/rap producers to get the permission to used Prince samples from Warner Bros instead of Prince. [Edited 2/22/12 21:04pm] |

Prince is actually cool for doing that.. Most artists would accept just to make some cash but he choses to stick with what he believes is better for his music...
I wonder how Prince felt about MC Hammer sampling When Doves Cry for the creation of Pray, knowing that Prince couldn't stop Warner Bros from giving Hammer permission at the time? |
