There is a sound in some of his older stuff that I always wondered what instrument or what distortion was used to make that sound. A good example of the sound Im talking about is completely throughout The Family's "Scream Of Passion" and even his "Wonderful Ass" masterpiece lol. Do anyone know the sound Im talking about and what it is? I never heard it no other musician's music. Anyway, I would LOVE to know.

It's just a flange effect on parts of the beat, flange feedbacking in a cycle.

Yeah, it's a flange effect. However, in Screams of Passion I don't think it's layed over Linn drum samples, but rather longer guitar notes.

On Wonderful Ass the flange is on some rimshots and toms.

Note that the same effect is used on When Doves Cry and many other songs.

Note that this is something I'd like to hear in his current music!

Flanger effect that he mostly puts on the percussion or drums.

its def. a signature Prince sound to put that effect on drums.

New artist nowadays are copying it, including the use of Linn Drums. Artist like The Dream.

Anybody know what that killer effect he puts on his guitar on the Rave DVD during his solo in Fly Away with Lenny?
