Super Bowl Prep Even though Prince put on the best show ever, I don't think he took advantage of the performance....Just look at how Madonna had it all planned
- interviews all week leading up to the show; debuted new single - album available for pre-order right after the show - world tour dates announced days later
No idea why he didn't try to capitalize on the performance but it was still bada$$ nonetheless.

Madonna is the most famous woman in the world and has a major corporation backing her for a new release. "Climb in my fur."

..and that major corporation is Madonna herself. She doesn't mess around.
But Prince is Prince, he did fine. His strategy is based on whims and chocolate sprinkles until he loses interest. That is who he is, the best fans can do is just go along with it for the ride.

Yeah..and he did do that one commercial for it (which was cool/hilarious imo) which is a lot for someone like him. "Climb in my fur."

When has Prince ever gotten his marketing right?

^the WB's years.....when he was a slave...
but he's supposedly making more $ nowdays - so who's the fool?

And who is that major corporation?

Compared to Madonna, Prince is an amateur in the savvy department, always has been and it looks like he always will be. I some times wonder that if he had half the marketing ability of Madge he might have been as big as the Beatles or Elvis, ah well.

would he have had the same quality in his product, however.

And how does the Quality of his product compare between the Warner years and the 'emancipated' years?

For whatever reason, Prince doesnt seem to bother promoting most of his albums. He seems to be fine playing in a TV show and doing Hits tours.
The SuperBowl concert was very simple compared to Madonna. It seems he wanted to do a more music oriented concert with spotlight on his guitar playing. For ME, it´s a lot better than gimmicks and lip synch.

No doubt, his show was awesome...He actually sang/played. I like Madonna, but I hate lip syncing.....I wouldn't call his Super Bowl show simple but it wasn't as over the top as hers.
I just wish he would have capitalized on it...but we know the pattern by now "Paisley Park is in your Heart"

What are you talking about? When he did the Super Bowl, Prince was in the middle of his residency in Las Vegas. (I know because I was there the following weekend.) So essentially, he was already on tour. And he did several events in Miami that week.
The fact that you don't remember any of this doesn't mean it didn't happen. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Prince did the Superbowl commercial, he did a pre-press concert on NFL Network, the actual performance, and a thank you commercial. If that's not promotion, I don't know what is. Just because he didn't release an album doesn't mean he didn't do anything. It's a lot harder for Prince to get an album out since he is an indie artist and shops his product to the highest bidder, with his ownership guidelines. __________________________________________________

I don't know, I think he was pretty dang big in the '80s and that the "mysterious" and "eccentric" angle worked pretty well for him. Getting Purple Rain done and the hype around that could also be considered marketing genius IMO. That movie really helped take him to another level of fame/popularity.
Prince also happened to come up around the same time as Michael Jackson, and well Michael Jackson was tailor made for MTV, and MJ and MTV sort of made each other into the phenomenae that they became.
Jackson became as big as Elvis or The Beatles- maybe even bigger- and look what happened to the guy- slid into the pits of darkness both personally and professionally and the quality of his work progressively weakened. Bad and Dangerous were really good albums IMO, but neither were quite masterpieces like Off The Wall and Thriller, and then pretty much every album he released after Dangerous was hot garbage. History had some amazing tracks on it- for instance Stranger In Moscow- best song he's ever done in my mind- but the majority of that album was shit. Same thing goes for Invincible- Butterflies was a great song- but he didn't write that one and most of the songs on that album were straight up over-produced, awful, pieces of crap.
In many ways, Prince is lucky he did not reach that level if you ask me. He's just been able to quietly go about his business and keep on creating great music.

Prince sometimes can be very smart (the way he put Musicology on charts in 2004, for example) , but I believe he isnt just interested anymore in having massive hits. He knows that it´s extra hard without a record company and loads of money.

Prince has always had that attitude of it being his job to deliver the music, not promote it - you hear that all the time in reference to his years with WB, and afterwards his constant stalling on promotion once a record is out - it's just the way he does things.
He delivered a great live performance, Madonna pranced about lip syncing in front of a bunch of video screens and roped in any flash in the pan who answered the call. She sold it well, but the performance didn't connect with me at all.
