  1. Push Pull (live @ Aladin)
  2. Space (Glam slam Miami 94).
  3. Purple rain (live in argentina).

Space (Glam slam Miami 94) 6/7/94 is a really cool pick. What makes it more interesting is that there's no guitar solo on the studio track. I think what he did with the solo fit the song really well.

I know, couldn't resist it. You can't argue about the three choices though. My favourite Prince solo is probably the one in Kiss. Nicely thought out, easily hummable and quirky enough to stand out. Always makes me think of Brian May's solo to Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Short and with similar phrasing.

1) Let's Go Crazy- My all time air guitar classic. Public Enemy sampled it on "Brothers Gonna Work It out".

2) While My Guitar Gently Weeps- He killed it, even Clapton gave him props.

3) Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad- I'm surprised noone mentioned this before.

Delores - bland.

Holy River - makes me wonder why he doesn't try harder. I just don't get what he's trying to achieve with it.

Dolphin - he's just playing. There is no structure, no thought.

I think the three examples of the songs you have given me are perfect examples of his approach to solos. All three possess a flat approach to harmony and melody. I know it's a cliche but it's Prince by numbers. Filler at best. Where are the sympathetic notes? A solo should take the listener somewhere or at least be pleasing to the ear. Too much of his guitar work is forgettable.

But when he has his moments... wink Just a shame he can't string those moments together so they fit.

yeah, very few appreciation on this hidden solo... sad

Push Pull is also an unknow masterpiece.

Purple rain in argentina, nothing special except prince had this so relax feeling.

Cindy C is also a nice pick, true 88' blue angel sound.

iloveuanie your taste is contraversal. You said you like solos based in melody which you can hum to .Dolphin have very easy guitar solo but very melodic. It's not a show off solo.more of a singer songwritter guitar solo. Dolores solo is very skilled with some fancy melodic licks. Strange you favour Batdance solo which is nothing special in terms of melody,it's more jam oriented. It's easy to critize Prince but have you ever tried to pick some of his solos? Can you share us example of you playing,?

Hey just because I criticise something doesn't mean I can do it equally or better! If this were the case we'd have no critics at all! I see Prince complaining about politics all the time but I've yet to see him run as a politician wink

It's not always a case of shut-up or put-up. If we are only able to give criticism of those things we can do better we'll all be fucked. Or worse if we have to give praise of those things which are better than what we can achieve. My neighbour's daughter plays the recorder far better than I do but she still sounds absolutely horrific. Am I to say she's fantastic because she's more accomplished at it than I am? I think not.

Have I diverted the questions away from me yet...? wink

The three that spring to mind in no order are

Just My Imagination - Small Club

Noon Rendezvous - 7th June 1984 First Avenue

Shhh - The Beautiful Experience TV Special

All live ones funnily enough... cool

Peach, One night Alone... Live. I fucking love funky rhythm playing. That to me is where Prince shines as a guitarist. Luckily for me there are far more examples of his rhythm playing across his career than there are lead breaks.

So my top three solo'ish moments?

Girls and Boys, ONA... Live.

Whole Lotta Love (0:48 to 1:05), Indigo Nights.

Rave III, Small Club.

But the greatest moment he's ever had for me with a six string in his hands? Easy. The final moments of Let's Go Crazy. It's when I fell in love with everything he was, is and could be. The look, style, sexuality, passion, fun... it was all there in those last moments of the song.
