I would say the song is totally cool and funky when not compared to the original... but the rap is certainly not "fun." It kind of kills the whole thing for me.

I like it. I think the danger of placing rap into a classic older song, even of it be an old outtake or a classic song (1999) is that it will feel out of place. I don't believe it works and should be a lesson to P. Please don't rerecord something like "Let's Go Crazy" and add rap!! 1999new never again!

I think Prince fans know what he's capable of so it's harder to impress them.

In defense of the original I suspect that casual fans might be turned off by the less than perfect fidelity. I would bet that if you played the original in perfect quality and the new version in bootleg quality that a casual/non fan might prefer the better sounding version.
