What's Prince's Inspiration/Motivation These Days?

I was listening to Glam Slam on the way in to work today: it's a simple song structurally but is filled with so many wonderful subtleties. I really miss that in Prince's work over the past 20 years or so. No doubt he's put out some great songs since the Warner's heyday, but (painting with a very broad brush) much of his output covering the new millennium has been criticized as too conventional and woefully uninspired.

Maybe the difference is that Prince no longer has major input from his band members nor is he challenged by contemporary music. From Andre & Dez up through Sonny & Michael B so many of his band mates influenced his songwriting and musicianship -- I doubt he's gets that from his bands of late. As for his competition in the music scene there's no one to compete with as he did directly and/or indirectly with Rick James, Madonna or Michael Jackson for instance.

Maybe he misses such motivators too. Maybe it's that he simply has nothing to prove anymore.

Can't argue that...

But seriously Prince has been vocal about his love of God from early on. Like many before him he used whatever branch of Christianity he most aligned with to create some great if not controversial music. I get that the JWs wouldn't condone his marrying the faith to fornication through his lyrics, but that shouldn't affect the music, should it?

PRince seems to be motivated every other nite when he gets on stage an gives people there moneys worth an more an gives em the best show they ever seen ...

studio recording wise. aint much groundbreaking since PLANNET EARTH although MPLS/NEWLOTUS has some great moments an a bit of experimenting it still werent anything too new ... an 20ten was one of his lowest moments album wise with nothing he aint done before ... usually better

i think he is enjoying himself these days .. still putting on a great show .. but loving every moment of it even more than before ... i think he done alot of searching thru his long studio addictions an found the gems he is imortilising an keeping alive thru gigs .. i think he at at stage where quality control matters ... i am sure when he got something to other or say studio wise we will be treatd to a new album .. but i dont think he gonna force out another album if the ideas aint strong .. i think 20ten was the album he kinda did .. for the sake of making music .. an it shows ... i think that his next album will be one of his best ever ,,, cos thats the kinda artist he is ,,

i think he is at a stage in life where he is enjoying life .. music will always be important to him .. but his output shows that he has worked harder than most ... an took things as far as one man can .. he done more than most do in 20 lifetimes .. an lots of great work

i think they will be new stuff ...when he is ready an got something new to say . he aint gonna force it .. maybe he at a writers block ,,, all artists have em ... maybe even prince .. it will pass

until then .. he will be doing his thing

whenever i want to hear some new music ...i make some - prince '99'

Compassion, and who he finds interesting at the moment (evident in his 20ten album).. I think right now he most wants people to wake up, turn to/find their spirital side.. But thats just what I hear in his music.. We also have no idea what he's been putting in his Vault.. My guess is that he has A LOT to say about world issues (if you listen to Lotus Flow3r, and his Welcome 2 America song) ... Again this is my opinion chillout

What's killing his inspiration/motivation?

Illegal downloads, No-one buying cd's anymore, everyone into manufactured music these days, everyone expecting him to be how he was in the 80's, puts an album out n everyone hates on it here on the org... shall I go on..?

pray Peace in the House of Prince.

Well maybe not killing his inspiration - but it's certainly got to put a dent in his motivation

I have often thought the same thing as the OP. I have been on a 12" single/ remix kick lately. I find songs like Glam Slam extended and I Wish U Heaven 1, 2 & 3 absolutely incredible. I feel as though 10 minute jams like "La La La" would be unheard of from the Prince of today. That's not a knock but I miss that musicality and creativity. Is he just in a different place now (as it is 20+ years later) or is he just not inspired or capable of that style of music anymore?

that Larry guy from Sly Stones band. I never understood that but seems like Prince is sucking up to him all the time. Go figure

He hasn't really explored the subject of sex very much.

Hopefully to do a Dylan-esque or Springsteen type of release.

That could end up being the best thing he ever does or an unmitigated disaster, either way I would love to see him make the attempt.

Don't see it bgeing a disaster (unless the lyrics are controversial etc ala Avalanche/TRC..which I dont consider disasters but others do). I liken it to be something at least of more/continued substance at this late stage in his repetoire.

I mean enough about narcissism, dances, telephones, and pussy.
