Not too much a difference, but the picture quality was pretty impressive for an older movie.

Blu-ray: Max resolution 1,920x1,080. Uncompressed audio. Better video compression.

DVD: Max resolution 720x480. Lossy low-to-mid bit rate "mp3" quality audio.

I'm just starting to really discover the difference in audio quality between Dolby Digital Surround tracks on some of my blu-rays, and the far superior DTS tracks on others. Yowza!

As for picture quality, I actually can't stand watching regular dvds anymore... even if it's one of my favourite films that hasn't been released on blu yet. And Netflix? Fuggedaboudit.

Your blu-ray player should be upscaling your regular dvd's though. Some of my older regular dvd's look a lot better when played on my blu-ray player, some just look the same though. lol

Off topic, I know, but does everyone else's Blu Ray player take f&^%ng AGES* for the the disc tray to open? I could listen to an entire Prince track in the time it takes to open up sometimes. I tmight just be a Sony thing. Drives me mental.

*to be honest, it's probably only about 4 seconds, so that whittles track choice down to that Miles tribute on the Rave album, but still...

I have a Panasonic and it's just as quick as the normal dvd player (disc tray wise).

My cd player on the other hand, not only is the tray a gritty slider, it closes slow, and takes forever to scan the disc and play the bloody thing. Good hi fi too, but I was a little pissed off at the cd tray open and close quality when I first set it up.

Oh yes, for sure... but the whole time I'm still gritting my teeth thinking, "it ain't blu... it ain't BLU!!!" lol

Swingin' this back around to Prince, I sure hope we get UTCM and SotT before too long (though if the U Got the Look segment in Sign looked as rough as it did on the dvd, it'll probably look ghastly in HD!).

That segment in SOTT for U Got The Look is supposed to look rough as it was a dream sequence. I too never understood Prince's reasoning for this.

Not to mention that the U Got The Look sequence was filmed on video and the rest of the movie was actually from film.

Would be nice. It would be nice to have all the VHS only releases on proper dvd or blu-ray too.

Still, at least we have quality bootlegs until they do.

This is the closest thing we have to a blu-ray of SOTT, This was a Canadian release for ages but seems to be available elsewhere now. Quality is not blu-ray, but it's much better than the standard dvd. Amazon has this for sale. http://www.amazon.com/PRI...mp;sr=8-11 Expensive but worth it, cheaper in the UK though. wink

Purple Rain on blu-ray has 8 music videos, commentary by the three directors (former managers). First Ave, and a bunch of other stuff. Take it from a person that watches the special features before watching any movie. The special features are very entertaining a blast from the past.

I thought the SOTT "DVD" out there is a bootleg?

~One reason, as silly as it sounds: Netflix doesn't stock it. Not at all. And they don't stock bootlegs.

So it's just like the 2 disc 20th Anniversary DVD release. of course, only on one disc and BR quality?

Netflix does not stock it? So that means it's a boot?

Oh yes, I got that dvd the day it came out.

I think it has something to do with how the picture was released by Cineplex-Odeon films, which I believe is a Canadian company. The dvd's released on the Alliance Atlantis label, which I believe is Canadian as well (you'd think I'd know, since I live here). So maybe us Canucks have the sole right to release this film, or something. razz

The Brazillian version is the bootleg. A bootleg that was once carried by Best Buy, BTW.

True, or at least it's a grey market import. It even has a photo on the cover from an earlier era. But as said above, the Canadian (amazon.ca) released Alliance Atlantis DVD is 100% legit - and absolutely great.

Apparently, SOTT has been screened on HD cable and/or satellite stations, but was probably up-scaled and certainly compressed for broadcast.

The blu-ray of PR isn't exceptional. A bit shoddy to be honest. Bit like some remasters. One could even say it goes with the territory wink

I still have it mind you. Because I'm sad like that.

What's your beef with the blu-ray? (I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm honestly interested - I thought the film was presented pretty well, overall)

After reading the review at Bluray.com, I'm going to try to wait for the 30th anniversary and hope for an updated extra special edition hopefully with upgraded quality or at least new bonus features. As it is, it would certainly be an upgrade in picture & sound from the DVD, but according to the review, not by much. Not to mention, all of the bonus stuff is just ported over from the DVD with no upgrade at all.

That said, at the low prices I keep seeing it for, I'm likely to take the dip anyway cause I'm sad like that too! biggrin

But, damn! I've already bought the movie 4 times:

1) The original VHS release

2) The VHS re-release (mid 90's) because the original was well played

3) The original DVD release

4) The DVD special edition

Not as many dips as for Star Wars at least... lol

here's that review:

I generally look at this site for my blu ray reviews. They are technically quite accurate for my limited comprehension of picture and sound.

Yeah, with approx 2500 titles in my DVD collection I need help in knowing which ones are worth the upgrade to Blu. Bluray.com has proven very accurate in their reviews and a great resource in making those decisions.
