Vanity in P's life & music

Hi there:

I've been reading and watching a lot about Vanity6 and Vanity, including interviews here and there.

From now and from the 80s. I also read some topics here in relation to their lives together, the group and stuff,

but no comments about P's music/lyrics/songs connected/dedicated to her after she left.

Since Vanity left the group and P before Purple Rain was filmed, did P write any song about/to her?

He was in the writing process of the soundtrack and I guess he wrote a lot of stuff which was left unreleased.

Is there any trace of Vanity in P's music after she left? Any reference?

I saw that she even presented the AMA prize for him in 1985. They greeted on stage, I think.

With all the amount of unreleased P's music and my limited knowledge I couldn't tell.

Thanx for any info, idea, interpretation and/or feedback

Not that I know of, but I don't know the available data about Prince's unreleased songs by heart.

Her orgasm from Vibrator has been re-used (uncredited) on both Madhouse's 8 and Come, but it might just be that he liked the sound of it, and not necessarly a homage.

You will find hysterical people here that will try to convince you that Strange But True and many other post-Purple Rain songs were about Vanity, and that she was the most important woman in his life, and that he still regrets her to this day, but that's all bullshit. From the data we possess through interviews of the people who were there, she seems to have been a relatively minor relationship in Prince's life, and the fact that he exhibited himself with her was more a P/R thing than anything else. Susannah and Mayte inspired many more songs.

Wonderful Ass (1985/86) is about Vanity

and there is a Vanity 6 Sex Shooter outtake (in my opinion hotter than the A6 version)

Dates from '83 though whilst she was still around, so not written about her after she left I guess.

Strange But True? Never heard that in reference to Vanity! What lyrics do people think are about her?

I agree, I think she was a visual foil for Prince because she looked like his female alter-ego, "Vanity", but beyond that, we read that Susan was his main squeeze then, then Susannah and there seems to be at least a few more songs about Susan Moonsie than Vanity that I can think of at least. Possibly Vanity is one of those people who found cocaine charming in Old Friends 4 Sale, can't think of any others.

Switching it up a bit - I'd say about half of Vanity's first album was about Prince - Flippin' Out, Samuelle, Wild Animal (and Strap-On Robbie Baby razz ) all seem to reference her time with Prince directly.

right, that did date from 83, Wendy & Lisa pulled it out to work on in 1985

off subject a bit, she was the cover model on Cameo's 1982 album Alligator Woman and their 1984 album She's So Strange

There are very few times he has ever explained what a song was about.

The Vault book does state it is inspired by Vanity, but doesn't give a source.

There was a thread a few years back where a hysterion claimed that the whole song (and many others) was about her, and IIRC a few others popped-up and supported this claim, and they wouldn't listen to reason. And I recall a few other threads of this kind in the 11 years I've been on the Org.

I would assume that the Vanity 6 project was solely centered around his attraction/relationship 2 Vanity

Even though the idea was in the works before he met her

But her sexiness, attitude and personality is definately all over that music and the outtakes for the new album

I see that even P's pics have a B-side/Outtake that's better than an official one.

That 2nd pic is HOT!

Wouldn't any song about Vanity or Mayte or any of the others instantly become about whoever he's currently dating instead?

They mean who it was actually written about, there are often anecdotes from people working with Prince who the song was written for, or a specific relationship it references - for example 'When Doves Cry' and 'Private Joy' are said to be about Susan Moonsie, and 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' and 'The Beautiful Ones' are said to be about Susannah Melvoin.

right,

I Hate U about Carmen Electra

She's Always in My Hair about Jill Jones even with the point of attaching a painting of the dog Prince gave her to the single sleave image of the woman she represents

Better With Time about Kristen Thomas
