Prince, Sopa and Pipa

Greetings...

2 all in the Purple Haze & funky garden of digital vibrations

I was thinking about Prince's position in the whole debacle, above. Wikipedia, other major sites shutting down for the day (the org did not btw).

It's a hard one for him, because on the 1 hand, he has vehemently opposed "illegal" sharing of his music, bootlegs included.

Then again, Prince and the music industry, especially the big players, are not best of friends. Surely, he would support the New Breed, as opposed to those of Mendacity?

What are your thoughts on this?

Looks like a Gemini solution is required, and Prince's tension with the Internet represents the issues surrounding Sopa and Pipa ... which today, is signficant.

Peace and be Free

cool

I unnoticed. P is anti-piracy, but even more so, he's about free speech. Even a small investigation says SOPA isn't the best solution for piracy(i don't think there will ever be one) and creates HUGE opportunities for the why down of open speech on the internet...I think prince is aware of this.

I believe Prince is pro-Sopa and Pipa, but he's still on the fence about Frodo and Sam.

I guess this is forgivable since you arent from the US, but theres some legislation(s) being worked with right now to pretty much destroy the internet

Interesting. It appears most so far think he is for these 2 legal developments. Personally, I think it must be eating him up. I mean, it's a sensitive issue for all of us here. Prince, probably more than many other artists, has had a rocky relationship with fans and the Internet; remember the whole P-Funk debacle. But he must know that hegemony cannot remain in the hands of the powerful players of the musical industry and a balance has to be found some how. I think he's going to have to take a position; this affects him and all of us.

Ripopsopapipa, ripopsopapipa...

It's all 1's and 0's to Prince. I think the matter's probably over his head. But he'd probably mask it with the usual banalities about a dead medium.

I'm not sure if 1's and 0's refers to money confuse but again I will say...it's sensitive and a hot issue. Let's look at us and Prince (again). Do we continue to download boots, etc. and say it's our freedom to do so, no one can say anything biggrin or do we consider the artist, as in Prince? then again, from Prince's point of view, does he sit back & support what appears to be the entertainment industry's attempt to control or stifle creativity when he knows they ain't up 2 no good? or - should Prince start releasing his music for free from now on - seeing some fans don't want 2 pay? It's hard to say - but the point is, these laws relate to the purple community

I don't think it's sensitive for him. And in this case, the digits refer to money and not binary code, yes.

Well, Prince is well aware his music, especially, live...is all over the web; he could be making a huge fuss, but he's actually quiet if U think about it. I don't think he's that insensitive as some may think...in relationship to the digital garden

yeah because making a fuss right now cant do anything. if sopa or pipa went through, then he could make tons of fuss. i really dont understand how you could think that a 53 year old bitter(at the internet) devout jehova's witness(therefor hyper conservative) prince could under any stretch of imagination, be against internet censorship

I tend to look for the good in people, and do not see Prince as bitter, or as an age; that's just me though. biggrin

But, the plot thickens....Universal gets hit, as does the recording association. Prince's The Rainbow Children is so relevant in this time.

As I previously suggested, in one way or another, he will have to express his views and choose sides; he cannot support Mendacity & the youth at the same time.

The youth are the 1's who have supported him all along.

Now is the time for Prince to release new music; not re-releases, new music about the times...

What do you mean? He's steadily removing videos from YouTube or having audio stripped from videos. That's a fuss.

From what he's said in the past, I would think he'd be on the fence about it.

Of course, "The internet is dead" so I doubt he gives a shit either way?

but that is what it all comes down to isn't it? how the law balances copyright acknowledgement and freedom of creativity.

perhaps the next move for Prince is to co-release albums with fans...whereby he is the initial distributer, and fans the next "man," who get a cut out of all sales

it's only fair right?
