.........so what if they do?

I'd take Prince's version of the Blues over ANY Blues artsit alive or dead.

Which just means that you don't like blues or you don't know what good blues sounds like.

Not a blues fan but I dig Albert King & B.B. on occasion.

lawd there's a lot of blues snobbery going on in here. First of all I think P would hate to be labelled as just a blues artist BUT let there be no frickin' doubt - when he does the the blues he can be frickin' untouchable i.e. and please don't nobody tell me these ain't the blues:

Motherless child - Septimo live TV performance

The Truth

The Ride

12.01 - electric version from the Musicology tour

Dark - the blues does NOT need a guitar

5 Women

There's 6 solid examples, just play those to any musician and they will all say the same -'hey I didn't know Prince could play the blues'!

Blaqueknight, that's a bunch of purist bullshit. There's no one rule about what is blues. In my view punk rock is a form of blues.

Purity is like political correctness--a way to divide us with meaningless dorkyness. Even Cornel West thinks Prince is a bluesman.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Harlepolis

The bootleg "Playtime" has a couple of impromptu performances in the blues vein.

others mentioned it - 7th st entry - Blues in G aka "Outside Help" originally recorded (or at least made famous in blues circles) by BB King

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrpnGDjsNS0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHQiMCJQ9PQ

Don't forget Electric Man was also a blues by Muddy Waters, recorded in the early 70s

Personally, some of my favourite Prince blues was done on the Le New Morning 1987 boot. Check Red House et al on that...

that's the one. prince misses off the first verse

All of your affection is gone baby and your love is growing cold
I've said all of your affection is gone baby and your love is growing cold
Hey, I've got a new story to tell you this evening, baby
One that ain't never been told

I went to work the other day
But I thought that I would double back
And that car I saw sitting in front of my door
Looked like a brand new, a brand new Cadillac, yeah!

I ain't got none now baby
I think you've been cheating on me
I believe to my soul baby, that you've given me some outside help
That I don't think I really need

The iceman came by this morning
And you know he didn't leave no ice
The postman came by later baby
And he didn't even ring twice

I think you've been cheating on me
I think you're running out on me
I believe to my soul baby, that you've given me some outside help
That I don't think I really need

Now, I want you to tell the iceman
The next time he'd better leave some ice
And I want you to tell the postman
He'd better ring more than twice

And when I come home from work in the morning
Better still be some groceries on the shelf.
I want to tell that slick insurance man
That he'd better write some insurance on his self.

Yes, I think you've been cheating on me
I think you're running out on me
I believe to my soul baby, that you've given me some help, some help
Some help, I don't really need

it's called "i got some outside help i don't need" to give it's full title

Pomade

The Ride (CB version) sounds like the blues to me. So do Dark and Papa. He's great at taking elements and giving them his "Prince" twist. I wouldn't call Motherless Child a blues song, but it's clear that's the feel he wanted created by the rhythm arrangement (which also cropped up in One of Us and some other song he did). shrug

But the blues greats would've smoked him in a cutting contest. Just saying...

I still think he plays blues like every other pub guitarist I've heard. Yes he is very good but we all learn those licks. The blues is easy to learn but to really play it I guess you need to live it. It has to be in your blood. You need to be dedicated to just that and nothing else.

Okay, I'll make an exception for Down Home Blues from Small Club wink He plays it fairly well on that one. I stand corrected.
