mix tape...

My friend downloaded her first purple tune, when doves cry, and has had it on repeat since.

Am gonna make her a mix tape (not quite a tape more like a cd).

What would you include?

Save yourself a lot of time and energy and just burn her a copy of The Hits/The B-Sides, then you can devote the time it would have taken to make her a mix cd by watching donkey porn or whatever it is you do of a day.

I would do the Hits/B-sides as well as a few of the NPGMC Ahdio shows. Some of my favorite Ahdio shows:

NPG AHDIO Show: Transmission #9 (available since 11/15/2001) (62:07 min.):

"The Rainbow Children/Last December" excerpts with various TRC album comments / *"(Jukebox with a) Heartbeat" - Prince [4:34] / "The Stick (Updated Version)" - The Time / "Do it all night" - Prince / Segue: 'Pay Girl Rap' / Segue: Morris Day Intro from 'Release it' (of Graffiti Bridge) / "Jungle Jazz" - Jacob Armen / "Willing and able" - Prince & The NPG / "Northside Jam (Rehearsal/live)" - The NPG / "Real thing" - Tony LeMans / "Love on a blue train (live) - Sheila E. / Live Medley, N.Y. - Prince: "Let's go crazy", "Kiss", "Irresistable bitch", "She's always in my hair", "When you were mine", "Insatiable", "Scandalous" / OUTRO : Telephone conversation (unknown woman/orchestral music by Clare Fisher (?).

NPG AHDIO Show: Transmission #8 (available since 09/19/2001) (47:38 min.):

Intro feat. Ingrid Chavez ("Love thy will be done (Prince Mix)"/"I know"/"The Cross"/"The Plan") / "The Plan" by The NPG Orchestra / "Anna Stesia" / "Elephants and Flowers" / "I wish U heaven" / "Love thy will be done (Prince Mix)"[1:33]* / "Pearls b4 the swine" [3:01]** / "7 (Acoustic Version)" / "Space (Universal love Remix)" / "Still would stand all time" / "Into the light" / "I will" / "The holy river" / Outro ("The Plan/"Positivity").

NPG AHDIO Show: Transmission #7 (50:46 min.):

Intro ("Judas Kiss" by Prince)/ "The good life (Platinum People Mix)" by The NPG / "Shall we dance" by Brownmark / "Kain't turn back" by Mavis Staples / "Higher than high" by Tony LeMans / "High" by Prince [5:06 min./full version!] / "Good Judy girlfriend" by Carmen Electra / SEGUE 'NPG Ahdio' / "100 M.P.H" by Mazarati / SEGUE / Live Medly (from 1986): "Automatic" / "DMSR" / "The dance Electric" by Prince & The Revolution / SEGUE 'NPG Ahdio' / "The drama" by Chaka Khan / "Whispering dandelions" by Ingrid Chavez / "Standing at the altar" by Margie Cox / SEGUE / "The greatest romance ever sold (Jason Nevin's Ext. Remix, alternate version!)" by prince / Outro ("Judas Kiss" by Prince).

We did a series of polls recently to rank the best Prince songs in the opinion of the org. In alphabetical order, these are the ones that made the top of the final poll:

1999

A Love Bizarre

Adore

Anna Stesia

Computer Blue

Controversy

Crystal Ball

Do Me, Baby

Erotic City

Forever In My Life

Girls And Boys

Head

I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man

I Wanna Be Your Lover

If I Was Your Girlfriend

Joy In Repetition

Kiss

Let's Go Crazy

Little Red Corvette

Mountains

Purple Rain

Raspberry Beret

She's Always In My Hair

Sign O' The Times

The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker

The Beautiful Ones

When Doves Cry

See here:

http://www.cs.cornell.edu...thm=runoff

I would say that's a pretty good start for a new fan. Of course, you'd want to order the songs in a way that flowed well.

my vote was cast in a number of those! i enjoyed them. interesting that nothing post 88 made the ultimate list though.... plus as much as i enjoy donkey porn the hits/b sides was issued near on 20 years ago - we've had looooads since!

Very true, but you don't want to scare the person away. If they are just getting into Prince, a great introduction is either The Hits/B-sides or The Ultimate. They cover his biggest hits as well as a few obscure trax that are loved by his die-hards.

I suspect the reason is that, although many fans like some of Prince's post-1980s work, we don't agree as much on which post-1980s songs and albums we like. For example, some love The Rainbow Children and some hate it. Some love Lotusflow3r and some hardly listen to it. On the other hand, most of us agree on which of his 1980s songs are the best. In a Condorcet poll, the consensus choices will move to the top.
