Well, this has been quite an informative thread! Found out a few new things. Not too surprising that I wouldn't know that much about this era, though, because this is around when I stopped paying attention to him, so this era to 2004 is kind of a black hole. Org has been helpful for filling in the holes. Thanks.

At risk of being called naive....am I the only fan who heard "Greatest Romance Never Sold" and then surprised to learn afterwards that it actually flopped as a mainstream single?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm not surprised it flopped, it's was a midtempo single, it didn't get the best promotion, and it was Prince (an aging* "pop star" who only had 3 huge hits that decade). I love the song, though - it's definitely my favorite on the album. I love the melody, instrumentation and singing, but it never struck me as a song that would be a huge hit. It did reach #63 on the US Hot 100, and #23 on the US R&B charts - not too bad.

this seems like an era a lot of fans were not so 'involved' in outside of the Paisley Park celebrations

Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince
chapt 18
Comeback
pg 236
Arista released Rave on November 9,1999, and Prince continued to throw himself into promotion of the project, planning a mini-tour of the United States and a video shoot for "the Greatest Romance Ever Sold."
Davis superiors at Bertelsmann had other ideas, though, and insisted that early promotion focus on European markets, a decision driven by the presence of the company's headquarters in Germany. Prince resisted, arguing to Davis that the U.S. market was crucial and that European appearances would delay the video shoot. But Davis had no real choice, and Prince reluctantly sat for interviews on television shows throught Europe.
These, and his visits to American programs such as the Today Show, were brief, stilted affairs that did little to stir enthusiasm for the album. Larry Graham was a distracting presence during many of the interviews, as Prince wasted valuable promotional time lauding his friend. "This is the best bass player I've ever had," Prince said when Graham joined him on the Swedish show OP Reis. "Larry is as important as anyone, anywhere, anytime."

the music was a lowpoint in Prince's career,
I still like the look a lot.... Prince 4Ever.

The song was ok, but it was the video that got me thinking...ugh. Not, because there was anything wrong with the production, I just didn't like that he let her fall like that. Classic Prince, wooing some poor emotionally-defenseless young woman until she completely falls for him and then just turning his back on her and walking away. I know...get over it and I was, until I saw it here.
Oh, but he didn't have some of his "sexiest" moment in this era. Something about that "Messiah" look!!!!!

While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking took place in early 1999 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. The Hornheadz recorded horn overdubs for the track on 17 May, 1999 at Paisley Park Studios (during the same session as horn overdubs for Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This?, Man'O'War, I Ain't Gonna Run and R U Ready?). Eve's rap was overdubbed in mid-September, 1999, at Electric Lady Studios, New York, NY, USA (during the same set of sessions as her rap overdub for The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (The Adam & Eve Remix)). The Nasty Girl remix was likely recorded in late 1999 at Paisley Park Studios, but this is unconfirmed. In Summer, 2000, a 12" maxi-single titled The Hot X-perience was promoted on NPGOnlineLtd.com, containing several remixes of Hot Wit U, including Underneath The Cream, which originated during the remix sessions from a lyric from Hot Wit U. A video of Hot Wit U (Nasty Girl Remix) was shown online, but the single was left unreleased.

This is why this era is so weird to me: I absolutely LOOOOVE his look (minus any pic where he's wearing plats or braids) during this time, but the music was absolute SHIT!!! I wish he'd grow his hair long again because there are several things he can do with it, but we all know that his JW beliefs won't allow that, unfortunately.
He's been rockin' the same usual look for about 10 years now. Is this to make up for changing his look for virtually every year of his career up until about 2002? Ugh.

Rave was the WORST era!! Well the 1999 New Masters & Rave!!!
But the good thing is he learned allot from it, when the industry came back around in 2004! He knew they would want a 1984 remembering and he was ready - he learned from all his mistakes from 1999-2000... and he made a TON of money! Pretty much since 2004 he has made more in his career then anytime in the past!
$90 million tour $5 million gigs $1 million per show gigs #1,2 or #3 albums Quick tours which make huge money
He learned allot from that Rave era.

It's from an in-studio scene from the Rave dvd. He was playing something that sounded like Gamillah if I'm remembering correctly. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."
