Black Sweat had to be one of the greatest of the last decade

It ain't funk, but it is "funky". Very minimalistic, and a good track. Should've been a hit. cool

If 3121 had been released in '04 instead of Musicology; I think this would've been a big hit.

I think it has less to do with that than with age. After a musician hits a certain amount of years into their career, it's like their work is ignored, even if what they're doing is good.

I think that if a younger artist like Justin Timberlake had done it then yeah, it would've taken off. Notice that he spent a few years there doing just that (imitating the Prince sound) and sold a shitload of music.

We had this conversation earlier this month ( http://prince.org/msg/7/373870 ). I think I'll try to stay out of the conversation this time, but I'll say that I agree that "Black Sweat" is

I don't hate it, but it's my least favorite on 3121. I don't think it's that special compared to some of the better songs on that album ('The Word' being my favorite).

I agree with that, but every now and then there are exceptions. Cher had a huge hit, maybe even the biggest of her whole career with "Believe" when she was in her 50s.

I agree!!! I loved/love this song. Loved, loved, loved the video, it was simple but great. He is sexy/confident as heck in this video and I always get a thrill just watching him in this video. The video could be why I like the song so much.

It wasn't a big hit becaue veteran artists didn't have Billboard hits during the 00s, even if the singles were VERY good. Madonna was probably the single exception (Music, Die Another Day, Hung Up, 4 Minutes...)

but I'm glad that the GREAT Black Sweat was included on an album that reached the Billboard N#1, because, ironically, many veteran artists had hit albums in the 00s, but not hit singles, as I've said before...

3121 was a Number#1 album and Gold in America, and Platinum overseas, and it launched the Superbowl performance...

just sayin' shrug

This is true, but then again how many veteran artists get the press and hype that Prince did in '04? Dude was everywhere and it wasn't because Musicology was a great album. As someone else mentioned, exceptions can happen and had the more pop-oriented album been released I think potentially he would've had a top 10 hit (granted he didn't release te amo first lol)

Just a what if...There seem to be so many of those when it comes to this guy lol

Black Sweat and Guitar are two of the most bumping and accessible tracks of the 00's. If these two had been on the same albuma and released in 04' could have been something

imo, it would've been a hit if it didn't have the annoying high pitched whine throughout, which only gets worse near the end, and with a few lyrical changes.

The beat is slamming & definitely worth of a hit.

The lyrics are ok but would've been better if he either called it "Hot Sweat." That would've been an awesome compliment to James Brown's "Cold Sweat." Alternatvely, he could've just rotated through different colors "Black Sweat", "White Sweat", "Brown Sweat", etc. I think calling it "Black Sweat" linked it to African Americans for a lot of folks, who would rather hear a more diverse & inclusive song.

I wasn't crazy about this song when it came out. I remember thinking it sounded like a throwaway. Maybe I should put this back into my regular rotation again & see if its aged well.

It did have its moments, but Black sweat? wink

It's a seriously catchy tune with a good beat, but that's about it. Sort of like much of 3121 imo (except the word and the dance). But then I'm the kinda guy who likes most of the stuff on TRC, PE or LF biggrin

It's a fun song.

It 'screamed' for a paisley remix/ext. version.

If you can find it, the version reworked for Versace was a nod in the right direction (IMHO).

Well....

Every time I listen to it...I always have this weird feeling? lol

It's not a bad song, but far from 'The greatest'.

The video is very funny, and the beat is SICK! But I really think it gets too much attention as the standout on the album. It's not the best on '3121' 'The word and the title track' does Prince justice and should give much attention!

I do think it could have been a slamming hit if released in '2004' during the 'Musicology period' But it wouldn't fit with the album.

I keep looking for the live acoustic version of this song, they said it's much different from the album version, and I want to hear it already!!!! I know it's probably really good!

As someone said, if this was released by someone else, it would have been a REAL hit, but since Prince has been around for a LONG TIME. People just tend to ignore his greatness. Not necessarily ignore it, BUT it doesn't manage to captivate the audience as much. I like the song though, I do have a weird feeling still EVEN listening to it now. Haha. BUT his vocals, and the groove is really funky. I dig that about it. Now listening to 'Incense & Candles' I would say that's stronger than 'Black Sweat'...BUT HEY THAT'S ME! Lol

It's Button Therapy, Baby!
