1976 Outtakes -Leaving 4 New York. -Nightingale. -Rock Me, Lover. -Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me? -I Spend My Time (Loving U). -Sweet Thing. -Don't U Wanna Ride? (Sorry if I missed any). I love these outtakes. I'm 19 now, & Prince was around 17-18 when he recorded these. (I guess). Anyway, I love how young he sounds in these. (& the whole For You album). It was a good early attempt. Atleast 4 a teen. The lyrics weren't that bad. Some of thosr R better than trax 2day! Lol:) What do y'all think about these?

Leaving 4 New York is gorgeous. The pain of separation when you're young and in love is palpable on this. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I totally agree!
Leaving for NY, Wouldn't You Love to Love me and I Spend My Time are three of my all time favorites.
And the whole sound of that prerecord era is great, the acoustic feel of it...

I really wish he woulda worked on these more:) I loved the ending of "Leaving 4 NY" where he does that scatting. Or whatever it's called. & "I Spend My Time Loving U" has great, almost poetic lyrics. Nightingale is good too:) I see a lot of imagery in a few of these. They're nice songs for a young, up & coming Prince. How many 16, 17, 18 year old musicians are doing their own lyrics & music these days? The pre-album days of Prince show his genius & talent:)

Sweet Thing can damn near bring me to tears. The vocal is so beautiful. It sounds so amazing. It makes me think about the greatness that is to come. I have always loved Prince's falsetto. I have a soft spot for early Prince songs. Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me, and Rock Me, Lover are great as well.

These are some of my favorite songs,
U can see this style throught his music up till now
songs like Tangerine have that 1976-1979 feel
Leaving 4 New York is my FAV, If he released that one I would want him to keep some of the crackle to the song, don't change it, clear it up a bit but let a lot of that 'studio dub' feel stay on it.
When U listen to a song like that, u feel like your right there in the studio with him in 1976

What other songs does he scat on? I love that ending of Leaving For New York. Hot Thing has some interplay between instruments and his vocal, also When The Lights Go Down has him scat/singing the lyrics, are there others? "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I really dig a lot of these, especially Down a Long Lonely Road and Wouldn't U Love To Love Me?
It's kind of funny listening to We Can Work It Out... "Making music naturally / Me and WB" And then a big bomb sound effect...
In hindsight... [Edited 2/9/12 18:51pm]

This is arguably my favorite of the bunch at the moment. I wonder if he ever finished that one because he was definitely on to something there. Good music makes me happy.

His vocals sounded pretty foreign to me when I first heard these songs. Especially Leaving for New York. But I mean wow what a beautiful song....
And I think I spend my time loving you is pure genius, he recorded multiple vocals for this one and then combined them all together right? It sounds like there're 2/3 different people singing in this song...I don't think that kind of technique was ever used before 1976...am I right..? [Edited 2/9/12 21:38pm]

I'm imagining a scenario where I meet someone in the real world and they ask me what music I like. I brace myself for the confused stare when I say prince as they are only 19. But they say "I love "leaving 4 new York""
Mind fuck! That's awesome padawan. What do your peers make of your affection for prince? [Edited 2/9/12 22:29pm] If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

The circulating takes of 'Baby' and 'Just As Long As We're Together' you mention are from 1977. Regardless of the songs being started in 1976 we cannot count those as '1976 outtakes' because they're not circulating.
'Make It Through The Storm' and 'We Can Work It Out' are also from 1977.
'Baby, Baby, Baby', 'Down A Long Lonely Road' and 'Nadeara' are songs from 1978/79.
While SNIP listing those, you forgot to mention a bunch of short instrumentals, the song 'Rock Me, Lover' and the 1976 Moonsound sessions. There's a couple of instrumentals and an early take of 'Soft And Wet' from those sessions in circulation.

They are beautiful, Sweet Thing gets me every time I consider that period before '80 that he was a baby Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

if a song was started in 1976 it was started in 1976
I didn't forget to mention anything else. Did I have to mention every other song? Other members can list songs
You could have just listed the songs you know of and leave it at that instead of making this a personal attack on my post.
Entitled? This says a lot of about U. A topic created celebrating this time period, you need to turn into a bashing opportunity.

Oh, not many people know I like Prince. lol. I used 2 get made fun of in middle school 4 it, so I just stopped telling ppl.
It's actually an unhealthy addiction, lol, because I spend hours every day tracking down any outtake or live track that I don't have. & Now I'm sad because I'm running out of space on my computer! Hahaha:)
There r probably younger hardcore fans out there, I know a few on here.
Oh, & does anybody know if there is a full version of Hey Lover? I forgot 2 mention it in the original post. Mine is titled "Hey Lover 2" & is 46 seconds long. R there 2 versions?
