Huh, OK, I read more.
I actually think this album is crap. I LOVE Come On. Wasted Kisses is good, but I hate the weird ass noises thrown into the mix. Its like he wanted to make the song annoying. The One has become a great live song, but the album version sounds nothing like what he's been doing with it on stage for the last decade. Nah, NPS is definitely way far down my list of Prince albums.

It actually never was listed as a Prince album...... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

First of all, you don't dictate what gets discussed at the org.
Second, you're wrong. What is New Power Soul? It's Prince. It's Prince's band. It's Prince's songs. Dude, it's a Prince album.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Further, New Power Generation is Prince, Prince's band and Prince's songs.
Gold Nigga, Exodus, Newpower Soul (even with the stupid spelling) are Prince albums. Why someone like you, who appears to be such "fan", would try to argue otherwise is beyond me.

Uh there were about a thousand better ways you could have phrased that, you creepy fuck.

lol for real? I absolutely love that song. Except the "glug glug like a mug" line. Almost ruins it, but the undercover funk and absolutely astonishing horns more than makes up for it.

So I just dug it up and listened to it. What a piece of crap.

I actually love that whole album (and even wrote something like a lengthy appreciation post on here once). I understand why many people don't like it, but I love it. I love the silky production, the psychedelic hints, the whole craziness of this album.

I don't know why, I simply cannot explain, but... for some reason this song slipped under my defences and crashed into my 'me-likey' pile. It's a dense mass of thump. It is, as someone mentioned, a very dark song. It makes me nod my head and there's nothing I can do about it. The rest of the album is extremely weak... well, When U Love Somebody, Madsex and Shoo-be-doh are quite entertaining, as is Wasted Kisses, of course, but the rest... meh... especially I Like Funky Music... not by the sounds of it, you don't.... Furthermore, som people are confused as to the love Freaks On This Side is getting... I'm always conused at the amount of appreciation Come On gets... it ain't all that (to these ears) - one of the remixes was quite god - but I can take or leave the album version... give me Freaks anyday...
It's a bit like some of the stuff on Exodus; Good Life is meh, but Good Fun is fucking astonishing!
My appreciation of Prince's oises gets quite, quite bizarre sometimes.

and, I can't spell. | |

I appreciate people whose tastes are bizarre.. it's nice to not hear the usual "Newpower Soul sucks, but "Come On", "The One" and "Wasted Kisses" are great" ... I think "Mad Sex" and "When U Love Somebody" are both a hell of a lot better than "Wasted Kisses".
As for "Freaks", I haven't heard it lately, so I can't really recall exactely what it sounds like, but I hate the crowd singing the chourses of those 3 songs (Freaks On This Side, Push It Up, Funky Music). The song has always sounded dark, and somewhat creepy to me.. maybe I'm crazy, but something about the lyrics and singing on the verses weirds me out a bit... I do like it, though.
Personally, I'd rank the songs on NPS like this: 1. Come On 2. Mad Sex 3. When U Love Somebody 4. Shoo-Bed-Ooh 5. The One 6. Freaks On This Side 7. Wasted Kisses 8. Push It Up! 9. Newpower Soul 10. Until U're In My Arms Again 11. Funky Music
But as I was making that list I realised - say what you will - I absolutely love the whole album (except "Funky Music", which I don't like). Yes, the production/drum programming is bad, and the lyrics can be hideous at times, but it's a really fun album, and as someone else said, the album sounds somewhat depressing to me - odd, considering it's mostly supposed to be a party album.

One of the few occasions where Prince went a little bit more experimental again. Which I appreciate very much. Problem: he doesn't really succeed. There's something missing. Quite similar to a song like "Strange but true". [Edited 1/25/12 14:58pm]

I was actually gonna ask if you could find the post you wrote about it. I love this album, so I'll definitely read it. But, it's really long and I'm tired now... so I'll check it out later. I'm surprised to see how many other people commented about liking the album.

Like 'Strange But True' and 'Solo' - though I LOVE 'Solo' too! Good Fun? 'Big Fun' Is that right? I'm losing it, I tell you.

erik319, I don't know what the emoticon for applauding is... I don't know how to work my computer well enough to find it, but that is a masterful piece of replying. A tip of the hat to you, my god sir.
You are wrong, of course - - Freaks On This Side is a chunk of funk and a shadow-full chune of shadows and dark corners full of head swaying noise...
And I Like it. | |

Shh, don't tell anyone, but I don't mind it myself. It's not the best, but it's by far not the worst thing on NPsoul blah blah blah

You see... and call me naive if you wish... it appears as though George Clinton gave his blessing for two sets of musicians to pick up his legacy: The Red Hot Chili Peppers got the treble and Prince and his NPG got the bass. I can only imagine/envision/picture George Clinton bobbing his head to this tune. That's all.
Prince has inherited an awaful lot from some otherworldly musicians ... from George, he received the gift of weird, dark, bass-laden, plate shifting funk.
Freaks On This Side epitomises the "..."ness of GC and his funkadelic voyage.
See... I bet, if you were to play this song to a Big Boi or a Andre 3000 they would go... hey....yeah! or some such... I reckon they could hear the noise of Freaks On This Side like I can... that said, I have been known to have been wrong in the past. But, I'm relatively certain on this one!
