I hate it. I hate party songs too. They sound like songs a 15 year old should be singing.

I kind of dig both ends of the spectrum. The older, straightforward and simple songs have a raw emotional aspect to them; they remind me of being young, in church, listening to the choir. The newer ones, esp. TRC, I appreciate because they make you think more about what he's trying to convey on an intellectual level regarding religion. Since I really don't believe in religion the way he writes about it, I find it interesting trying to break it down, see where he's coming from.

Thank you for putting all this together. I have only heard one version and that is on my Bside 3CD set. I would love to hear them all back to back.
I love this song. It sounds like it was recorded by someone who is into performance art. I have put it on repeat in the past, and left it there for quite a long time. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

But to be honest what does he really sing about? Early work was about going out and shit, then it became about shagging, then his search for God (which he sometimes interpreted as ours), a bit more shagging and the state of the USA/World, then about how bad he was and more shagging, then God again and how we weren't included, then conspiracy theories and USA-centric world political views and now, to be perfectly honest, about stuff which means sod all to me and even less to those that aren't a fan.
What I do like is his complete hypocrisy. "Money ain't everything but I sure spend a lot of time singing about it or at least the lifestyle a lot of it can buy" is one of his (cliched) themes. His sex/faith conflicts are the other but I don't see that as being negative, just a journey. He's lost and, unfortunately for him, has not been able to see that they are not opposing acts.
Sometimes I wish he'd make his fucking mind up. He's old enough to know better now. It won't be long before he's drawing a pension (well he has a twelve year head start on me anyway) and only Peter Pan remained a boy forever. Perhaps it's down to the life he's led? Lots of yes men along the way. Despite most of them saying no! Lol.
He used to be a paradox but now I'm too old for that shit. Of course with so little really known about who he actually is we could all be very, very wrong.

^ I agree with most of what you said. Honestly, I don't find most of his lyrics interesting, but I find sex and partying the least interesting. At least in the religious, political and music industry songs he has something worth saying, even if what he's saying is batshit crazy and I don't always agree.
I'd like him to find something new and interesting to sing about - sing about life, his life, the state of the world, whatever. Prince is old and has had a lot of intresting experiences, surely. He must have something more interesting than screwing, partying and god to talk about. [Edited 1/24/12 18:52pm]

I agree with pretty much all of that, especially your final sentence

I prefer the simplicity at time,
TRC is one of my favorite albums but, not clear to me at all
He's telling a story mixed with Egyptology, some kind of Jehovahs Witness and some other things thrown in, so it does come off clearly as far as religion is concerned
