Prince is pretty much all old songs, and it's usually the same old songs over and over. Rarely anything within the past 20 years.

I know a lot of people think there are no comparisons between Prince and Madonna, but they became huge at the same time and I just never thought Madonna would be the one far ahead of the game. I think Prince just gives away his albums, because he's afraid no one will actually buy them. lol

I wish he would play more of the new stuff or atleast give us some different old songs....instead of Kiss give us 17 days...Instead of Let's go crazy give us Jam of the year. Kiss is like nails on a chaulk board.... I have seen him five times and I still haven't heard my favorite song 'ADORE'. Actually I had to leave town and missed a show in 2002 and he sang it there but still. OR maybe give us a small sample of Kiss on the keyboard and give us a full version of Diamonds and Pearls.

Songs I would love to hear (Full...no sample):

Private Joy

Automatic

Lady Cab Driver

17 Days

Always in my Hair

Anotherloverholenyohead

Adore

It

Diamonds and Pearls

Somebody's Somebody

Wasted Kisses

Come On

Call my Name (I did hear this in 2004)

Just to name a few...

Prime aka The Kid

I need u to shake Ur lil' ass n hips
I need u to grind like Ur working for tips
And give me what I need while we listen to PRINCE"

Here on the Org, about 10% of the members welcome and enjoy Prince's recent material, and about 90% seem to be living in the past... either '80s or '90s. I've said before that 'Lotusflower' stands up to any Prince album ever.

Whatever you've said before, it's still only your opinion.

While your numbers of who enjoys what, who lives in the past, etc., were clearly compiled with the highest level of science & statistical measurement, there's nothing anywhere that renders any period of interest less valid than another. Sure, if we expand beyond the confines of this web site, while he's had some very successful tours & live appearances, Prince on record hasn't really been relevant since the early to mid 1990s.

Here, however, we're generally a bit more forgiving, can tolerate the drek he's released since for the few gems that have been uncovered, & hope against hope that we see a return to form that captures the interest of not only ourselves but of a wider body of listeners, so when we ask them if they've heard the new Prince album, they're not wondering if it's a posthumous release.

I'm one of those that you'd foolishly dismiss as "living in the past," in that I enjoy his earlier work more than his recent output & do feel that his best work is largely behind him. Even he realizes this, given the ratio of new material vs. old he performs live. If he had confidence in his new work, if he felt it was something the audience wanted to hear, we'd hear more of it. Instead, he runs away with his funky little tail between his legs & calls it a "hiatus." Still, while I'm not chasing down random reworkings of vault tracks "leaked" by Dr. Dingleberry, any new legitimately released music by Prince is something worth at least one listen. For the moment, anyway.

Hi Matt. I thought about writing that line differently, and wasn't entirely content over simplifying in that manner. I do, however question the importance social relevancy, as I am mostly concerned with musical and lyrical content, as well as sonic treatment. I find 'Lotusflower' to be very satisfying to me personally on these levels.

It could just simply be a matter of taste. It would be interesting to conduct a study on the members of the Org, to document what other artists and musical genres they enjoy.

Could be a good sign. Why release tons of albums if you don't have anything interesting to say anymore!?

It's not the fans living in the past. It's mainly Prince who doesn't really try to go out of his comfort zone.

His new stuff is neither convincing in recreating the old sound nor in coming up with something a little bit more modern or different. As long as he doesn't keep focus on a really new artistic vision, it's going to be the same old.

that's it - that's exactly the gist of it, right there. nail squarely on the head, funkomatic.

1 would think that somewhere in prince's mind.. he would be saying to himself something like

"you know, I've been doing this [recording/touring/performing] for a LONG TIME..

for WELL OVER THIRTY YEARS now..

maybe it would help me - personally & musically - to take a real break from this non-stop cycle of recording/touring/performing..

just do something else - anything else - for a while & clear my head of music

after 6 months to a year off.. I might come back "energized".. I might have something (relatively different) to say, from what I've been saying musically over the last 30 years.."

in reality, though.. the "desire" to keep performing/writing/touring is probably bigger than prince.

he is so musically gifted, music is almost the entirety of who he is as a person

that for him to not make any music at all in any form

might well be like you or I saying "okay, I'm going to not breathe for 10 minutes"

we couldn't do that.

for prince to "step out of his comfort zone" & do anything other than make music would likely be very uncomfortable for him..

(though that might ultimately be better for him..)

prince completely invested & devoted himself into being the best & most prolific musician he could be.. but in doing that, he retarded what ever other growth he could have done as a person - in terms of relating to other people in a "normal way" or in terms of having a real interest in something else other than music (e.g. cooking, art, politics, science, whatever)

prince gives the impression that he would rather keep putting out average/inferior work

(inferior to his bet work, 1978-87)

& letting his die-hard fans drool over that (& over him)

rather than have to find something else - anything else - to do with his time that didn't involve music.

prince doesn't listen to anyone (else) who doesn't agree with him, so it's not like someone could say/suggest/insist that he take a break.

too bad.

in terms of musical proficiency, prince seems to be at the same level he was in his "peak years"..

I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..
