Musicology is an absolute jam!

This song is extremely funky. It's one of my favourite of the 2000's. It's just...that bass gets me everytime. Those drums are tight. Those synths. The rhythm guitar. Prince was THROWING IT DOWN. headbang

It was discussed a while ago, and it seems there isn't a lot of love for it.

I think it's good, but it's not one of my favorites from that album.

Musicology.. the best song on the album,

but it is so much better live, with real horns on it....

The Jay Leno performance with Candy Dulfor on sax was incredible.

I disagree with it being the best song on the album, but I agree that it sounds better with real horns.

My favorite Musicology Songs, ordered:

  1. Call My Name
  2. If I Was The Man In Ur Life
  3. Cinnamon Girl
  4. The Marrying Kind
  5. A Million Days
  6. Illusion, Coma Pimp & Circumstance
  7. Musicology
  8. Reflection
  9. Life O The Party
  10. What Do U Want Me 2 Do?
  11. Dear Mr. Man
  12. On The Couch

1-2 = biggrin ; 3-9 = smile ; 10-11 = neutral ; 12 = bored

Edit: order changed; "What Do U Want Me 2 Do?" moved from 12 to 10; Life O The Party & Reflection swapped places.

Good groove. But too little ideas to make it a great funk song!

A Prince classic. A great way to kick off so called "comeback", though he never went anywhere.

He plays this song a lot live for a 2000's song.

It was his comeback to the mainstream. He hadn't had a huge hit song or album since 1995. I think it was his best selling album since Diamonds and Pearls, though the suceess was largely due to giving away free copies on tour, and the huge press he got from the tour, Grammys & Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame induction/performance.

I like the album, but I think the suceess it had was largely due to the tour & other live performances.

I dig "Musicology" a lot. And I actually prefer the studio version than any live version I've heard. My favorite part, the rhythm guitar, comes through so much clearer.

I loved it instantly when it came out, though it took me a few years to come around to getting the album. I was happy for his success, and think I may have passed him in public outside a radio station on the street a few months before it came out, not knowing yet he's living in Toronto, cause the dude had on heels, shades and made me do a double take, but I decided against following him.

I'm glad to see my rating system catching on!

And I need to go back and redo my list.. I actually don't mind "What Do U Want Me 2 Do".. i shouldn't have put it last; though I still don't understand those who say it's one of his best songs post-80s

Apparently you like the album, minus "Life O The Party". Weird, being that you're always saying his music hasn't been that good since 95.

Screw them. There's nothing wrong with rating things.

You said in another thread that Prince's only great recent albums were TRC and Lotusflow3r, yet you seem to only dislike one song on this album. Personally, while I like this album, I consider it one of the weakest of his recent albums.

the studio version is weak

the bass sample is repetive and boring , it's the same throughout the song

it kicks ass live though

I love it too!! What's not to like about it anyway?

The live performance from the "Art of Musicology" on MTV is awesome! Esp with 'Dear Mr Man'.

This jam and 'Shhh' were the highlight of the Musicology Tour in my opinion.

It may be repetitive but it GROOVES! One really long jam I love that just sits in teh pocket is Gil Scott Heron's "B Movie" from the album Reflections. Aint nothing wrong with laying the same bass part down for a long time if it's fonky

i feel like it's too stationary, which prevents me from really liking it. same with "Dirty Mind." i need more changes in a song. and it's odd that he calls a song with almost no changes, "Musicology," when it has so little merit in terms of actual musicality. it should be called, "Groovology," if anything.
