Is this a common thought? Hidden Sly Stone tribute in 'Love Or $' I was recently watching a 1992 documentary on finding Sly Stone called Let Me Have It All, in which a couple of chaps set out on finding out where Sly is and proceed to track down those closest to him at one point ala band members etc. They do this before closing in on the master himself, only to be denied anything to do with him, even a glimpse. . Here's the doc officially uploaded to Youtube . . At 20:30 in, it is shown that the above track slowed down is a hidden tribute to Sly. Personally, I'm not sure what i'm hearing, is any one else familiar with this or can hear it? This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

i think he's trying to suggest that it sounds like sly when slowed down. having only skipped to that segment and watched a few seconds afterwards, would i be right in my presumption that the guy is a bit of a loony tune?

Hmm, I think Sly's influence esp during the Parade era is pretty much pronounced, and YES "Love Or $" does have a Sly-ish overtone,,,,but not slowed down.
I think the Camille/helium effect was a direct homage to Sly's 71-74 era. Stevie Wonder also take a page from Sly's notebook when he did the same helium effect for his Talking Book album.
BTW, great find on the documentary.

Thanks. I'm familiar with the Camille effect being that homage, but just hadn't heard of this specific homage. The more little details that are unearthed about Sly, the more it's easy to believe Sly being the biggest influence on Prince. Sly was definitely the precurser to Prince. He does seem very....enthusiastic....perhaps too much so, he comes off as comically arrogant at times, sorta like a David Brent or Alan Partridge! He does imply that it sounds like him slowed down, but he goes on like it's a fact that it's a tribute. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

Sure, that was old news when the song was released.
Of course, when it was released, it was released on 45-rpm vinyl. All we had to do was play the record at 33-rpm and viola!
I don't know if you can do that with digital files, so all that kind of cool stuff is lost on those that only have digital recordings.

You guys are jumping to a lot of conclusions. I've been a Prince fan since the early 80s and always been into the fan discussion too on the internet and elsewhere and NEVER heard any connection between Love or $ and some "Sly Stone tribute".
Anything is possible but Prince sped up his voice a lot with the Camille stuff and others....doesn't mean he did it for any other reason that iit's a cool sound. I always heard it was inspired by Pfunk who did that a good bit, not Sly Stone. As others have pointed out, many other artists have sped up their voices too.
And yes of course you can slow down or speed up digital files..they are digital so you can do anything with them. [Edited 1/13/12 11:47am]

^^^
P-Funk were influenced by Sly & company as well. Yes many have used the sped up voice, but the manner in which Prince sang in his Camille voice mirrored Sly.

I doubt PRince did this on purpose, but if he did, go Prince!

A lot of Prince's tracks are Sly/Jimi/Joni/JB tributes. Transmission over. Owoowah.

He did do it on purpose. If you take the 45 and put it at a 33 speed you can hear it as plain as day. Prince also put hidden messages in a lot of songs which you could hear if you ran the records backwards.

Well yeah I know it clearly sounded like Sly but maybe it was just a coincidence. Are there any other song's with a situation like this? Maybe a Camille song?

Recordings of him rehearsing the song at a more normal speed don't sound like Sly though.

I never tried listening to the Camille songs in a different speed but it would be interesting to find out if he did something with the Camille voice
