God (vocal) is pure MAGIC.. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this song. His vocal in this song is just...indescribable.
I think what makes this song so special is the unstable vocal. Like when he hit his highest note (0:40 to 0:44)...He could've easily went back to the studio and re-record that part but I think he intentionally let it be like that. He just let it all out. That spontaneous expression from going through spiritual ecstasy...I think it actually shows the vulnerability of human.. I don't have a religion but it's songs like this that make me think about the invisible force, something bigger than human...He just sounds so inspired and frail at the same time..
Along with The Love We Make, this song gets my vote for his best spiritual song.

I've always LOVED this song, that haunting PR era feel 2 it
I still remember when I bought the single with Purple Rain, it was winter time and night time when I came home with it and my brothers and a neighbor were in my parents living room with the 'record player' and we put it on, gave us chills

It sounds like a cat is being tortured. This is what he titles GOD? "Climb in my fur."

Yeah I love it too, his vocals are so intense in that number...beautfiul. Only Prince can truly pull off the shrills of frustration in a song like that.

Love the instrumental; hate the vocal version. "God (Vocal)" gets my vote for worst 80s Prince song. I think the lyrics are stupid and the vocals are gross. "God (Instrumental)", on the other hand, is a great song.

If by "Magic" you mean "hilarious"....I agree. That may be one of Prince's most silliest songs ever. Anytime I want a nice laugh, I put that song on. الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

All joking aside, I've always liked it too. Not as much as Power Fantastic, but it's okay. 비

You've got a point. At least the Rainbow Children had some mature structure behind it. Even though it's still feckin' barkin'.

That's something that I find in a lot of his 1999-ATWIAD sound, Prince did shriek a lot especially on stage, but I love that wildness God the Dance Electric Temptation Computer Blue(14min) Darlin Nikki(uncut) When Doves Cry
over all back then he did a lot of wild screams and yells unrestraint love

It's one of the songs that I would love to hear live one day. Beautiful.

well, given the age difference between the man that wrote both, wouldn't you expect come level of maturity to have taken place? The meaning he's trying to convey hasn't changed, just the message. It's crazy that people compare what he did in his 20's to what he's done in his 40's and 50's.

Possibly my least favorite song from that era. GOD awful. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Once again though the Org leaps to some argumentative opinion. It's tiresome and boring and only serves to hinder progressive conversation and stifle humour.

Yeah I absolutely LOVE the instrumental version as well
I love Power Fantastic too but I don't know if its just me, but I hear "Minor G is a chord of pleasures, It will be, played in eleven measures," as some kind of reference to G spot Plus, I've never heard anyone using the word "pleasure" to describe their spiritual joyfulness...but it is nice to hear different interpretations..
I've noticed that many people laugh at this song...I don't take his vocals in this song as his "singing vocals", especially towards the end. Like I said, to me at least, he sounds as if he's so overwhelmed by the emotions that he just had to scream, or made whatever the weird noise that humans make when they feel overjoyed, or perhaps frightened...sounds as if he's almost losing his mind. For some reason, I get it, completely, why he screamed.. instead of decided to sing melodically....you know? It's not calculated..he's improvising, only staying true to his feelings...I think it's brilliant you guys should try to listen to this song in complete darkness haha

God cracks my ass up endlessly. This was on my response to your thread. I love the main part of the song, it's just the bookends of ecstatic spiritual orgasming that makes for awkward listening. I've never listened to it in mixed company, a little too intimate of a song. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I loved it in high school and didn't think too much of it. Sometime later, maybe in my 30s, I put it on and laughed my ass off.

No, I didn't mean it like that. I actually like "God".
In fact I prefer it over most of "The Rainbow Children", actually. 비

assuming you're at least in your twenties, for the sake of arguement, it's fair to say that your frame of mind has changed dramatically from the time you were ten yrs old to when you were 20. It wouldn't be fair to say that your beliefs or how you expressed your beliefs at 10 is comparable to how you express them at 20. The same applies to someone at 20 vs how they are when they're 50. In fact, it's without a doubt even more pronounced. So, yeah, it is fair to compare someone's older works to newer, but perspective is important, don't you think?

Forty and a half And, yes, I agree with you. It wasn't a comment to take seriously though. As for God, I'd rather have that than recent stuff. He was so original back then.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I was way off on the age! anyway, yeah, I love this song, and when I hear it the one thing it makes me think of is how the expression of his beliefs have changed dramatically, but the basic belief has not. It illustrates pretty vividly how his religious leanings have progressed from a kind of simplistic "god made me, god made you" mindset to The Rainbow Children, which, like it or not, is pretty complicated comparitively.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This is exactely why I prefer his religious music from the 90s and 2000s to his 80s religious songs. "God", "4 The Tears In Your Eyes", "The Cross", "Eye No", etc.. are all way too lyrically simplistic for me to like them. The lyrics on TRC are clearly more well thought out. Prince is one of those who needs something else. Despite having so much it just isn't enough. So we've watched his journey. Some have thought him a prophet, others are bit looney and many, like myself, a man searching for enlightenment. I would elaborate but this phone is tricksy. Either way I prefer it when he sings about shagging.

Even though the vocals get pretty crazy, this is still my favorite era of his (Purple Rain) and with that 'God' gets my support. He was so insanely great in 83-84 that a little overindulgence gets a pass.
